Message from the DeanMay 15, 2017

Dear Graduates,

I extend my warmest congratulations to you, the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Class of 2017, and to your family and friends who have supported your achievement.

As graduates of Rutgers, New Jersey’s land-grant university, you have benefitted from a philosophy of education that emphasizes hands-on learning, global perspectives, accessibility and service. A School of Environmental and Biological Sciences education is not just about earning a degree or getting a job offer—it is about preparing for a lifetime of learning, growing, and serving.

Today you embark on a new journey, able to address the most critical challenges facing our society. You do so on a solid foundation built by excellent and dedicated faculty and by caring and supportive friends and family. It is in this context that all of us send you into the world, with the full expectation that your lives and accomplishments will be a source of pride for you and for our institution.

Remember that you will always be a part of the Rutgers community. I encourage you to remain involved in alumni affairs, and to know, wherever your journeys may take you, you will always have a home on the George H. Cook Campus of Rutgers—your alma mater for life.

Sincerely,

Robert M. GoodmanExecutive Dean School of Environmental and Biological Sciences

Dedication

We, the graduating class of 2017, proudly dedicate this School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Convocation Ceremony to our families, classmates, and friends.

Over the past four years, the interactions with our peers and the experiences we have shared, including the highs and lows, have highlighted our school careers. We have been able to reach this milestone, the first of many in our lives, due to the dedication of the faculty and staff of the School, and the support we have received from one another.

We also cannot forget our families and the instrumental role they have played in our development. Their constant guidance and support nurtured our growth, preparing us to be responsible and mature individuals as we take on our new roles in society.

We graduate today as a result of the efforts of all those who have helped us achieve excellence in education, and we carry with us a sincere gratitude.

Red Oak (Quercus rubra) New Jersey State Tree

Red Oak seedlings have been presented to graduating seniors at the School Convocation Ceremony since 1982. Instrumental in starting this presentation was Otto V. Kunkel, College of Agriculture, Class of 1940, and former District Forester for the New Jersey Bureau of Forest Management, who personally helped to grow the first seedlings. The School is pleased to present them to the graduates as a living memorial to an outstanding graduate and a good citizen of the State of New Jersey. Graduates will take a living part of the G. H. Campus with them, to grow tall and strong, as they, too, grow in their personal and professional lives.

The School of Environmental and Biological SciencesGeneral Honors Program

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences General Honors Program provides outstanding entering students the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary seminars and independent research projects throughout their undergraduate careers at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Students in the program have maintained a cumulative average of 3.4 or better and received annual merit scholarship awards of at least $1,000.

The Academic Costume

The wearing of academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities in the world. In the American Council on Education’s book entitled American Universities and Colleges, it is suggested that “Gowns may have been counted necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. Hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head. . . .”

Throughout the years, European universities have continued to show great diversity in their academic dress. American universities, on the other hand, when they decided to adopt academic dress, immediately established a code of regulations which today is followed by almost all American institutions. The establishment of this code has made it possible to distinguish the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctors and, at the same time, recognize the university which has given them the degree.

Gowns: Bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. Master’s gown, worn open or closed, has oblong sleeves, the front part of which frequently is cut away at the elbow. Doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It is worn open or closed. Cotton poplin or similar material is used for the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and rayon or silk ribbed material is used for the Doctor’s degree. Robes with green are worn by School of Environmental and Biological Sciences graduates to reflect the college’s environmental mission. The scarlet robes worn by some of the members of the faculty and administration indicate that their doctoral degrees are from Rutgers University. Scarlet robes are also worn by Rutgers University Governing Board members to signify their membership on the board.

Hoods: The hoods vary in sizes: 48 inches for the Doctor’s degree, 42 inches for the Master’s, and 36 inches for the Bachelor’s. All hoods are lined in silk in the academic color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the colors are shown in divisions using chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in the color designating the subject in which the degree was granted. The maize hood is worn by those receiving the Bachelor of Science degree; the white, by those receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Below is a list of some of the faculty colors as prescribed by the Intercollegiate Code for the binding of the hood:

The color or colors of the lining of the hood for the nine colonial colleges are: scarlet, Rutgers; crimson, Harvard; green-gold-silver, William and Mary; blue, Yale; red-blue, Pennsylvania; orange-black, Princeton; light blue-white, Columbia; brown, Brown; and green-white, Dartmouth.

Caps: Black mortarboards or soft hats are worn for all degrees. The gold tassel signifies a Doctorate. Graduates of the General Honors Program and George H. Cook Scholars wear golden tassels on their mortarboards.

Cords: Scarlet cords are worn by students who participated in the George H. Cook Honors Program; green cords are worn by those participating in the General Honors Program; and gold cords are worn by those graduates earning a grade point average of 3.5 of higher.

Summa Cum Laude 3.850-4.000; Magna Cum Laude 3.700 – 3.849; Cum Laude 3.500 – 3.699

On the Banks of the Old Raritan

From far and near we came to Rutgers,And resolved to learn all that we can;And so we settled down,In that noisy college town,On the banks of the old Raritan.

ChorusOn the banks of the old Raritan, my friends,Where old Rutgers ever more shall stand,For has she not stood since the time of the flood,On the banks of the old Raritan.

Then sing aloud to alma mater,And keep the scarlet in the van;For with her motto high,Rutgers' name shall never die,On the banks of the old Raritan

Chorus
