LI: To calculate the perimeters
of compound shapes
31.3.20
Good morning Y6! Today we are going to review what you already know
about perimeter and then work on calculating the perimeters of compound
shapes. Work through the presentation and complete the tasks on paper.
You will be able to check your answers after completing each task. On the
final slide is a challenge for each colour group. Try your best!

Challenge:
Red group: Orange/Yellow groups:
A plan of a play area is shown below:
a) Calculate the length of x and y.
b) Calculate the perimeter of the play area.
Here is a square.
Inside the square is an equilateral
triangle.
The perimeter of the triangle is
54cm.
Find the perimeter of the square.

Challenge answers:Orange/Yellow groups:
a) The length of the play area is 20m, so x = 20 - 8 = 12m.
The width of the play area is 15m, so y = 15 - 5 = 10m.
b) Perimeter = 8 + 5 + 12 + 10 + 20 + 15 = 70m.
Red group:
The triangle is an equilateral triangle, so all the sides measure the same length.
The perimeter is 54cm.
54cm divided by 3 sides = 18cm per side.
The base of the square measures the same as one side of the triangle.
It therefore measures 18cm also and because a square has 4 equal sides,
18+18+18+18 = 72cm
