FWADA FALL GALLERY NIGHT 2017 3

FWADA is a unique arts organization in a unique American place. Few cities of Fort Worth’s size are privileged to com-mand such a wealth of major art museums, and fewer still have such a vital community spirit. What truly sets Fort Worth apart, however, is the vigorous, longstanding, clearly defined coop-eration between the museums, the university art galleries, the non-profit exhibition spaces, and the art dealers, all of which are full working members of FWADA. To fulfill its stated mission to stimulate interest in the visual arts through educational pro-grams, art scholarships, and art competitions, FWADA orga-nizes, funds, and hosts exhibitions of noteworthy art. It spon-sors the Fall Gallery Night for members and friends, as well as Spring Gallery Night. All these attainments have created a stable environment that produces a steady stream of top-notch talent, including major local artists who exhibit their work nationally and internation-ally. Newcomers are frequently dazzled by the quality of work being created in every medium and style. Their passion rein-vigorates Fort Worth patrons who have become habituated to the riches that surround them, reminding them anew that the most authentic cultural connection they can make is the one that affords direct communication with the artists who interpret and illuminate the life experience they share through common background and interests. Although the city is justly recognized for its cosmopolitan worldview, it is the local artists and their devoted collectors who are the lifeblood of the Fort Worth art market. The members of the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association are pledged to the maintenance of a high standard of ethical con-duct and professional integrity, these businesses furnish a model that gallery associations in other cities might do well to emulate. FWADA is to be commended for its important role as a contributor to the cultural and esthetic richness of Fort Worth. – Suzanne Deats

In Her Image: Photographs by Rania MatarOn view through June 17

This exhibition brings together four bodies of work by the Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar that trace the development of female identity through portraiture. Depicting transitional moments of life, from young girl-hood to middle age, Matar’s works address personal and collective identity through photo-graphs mining female adolescence and woman-hood. Photographing girls and women in both the United States and the Middle East, the artist shows how the forces that shape female identity transcend cultural and geographic boundaries.

The Nature of Art & The Art of NatureThe Atrium Gallery is excited to pres-ent Caro Jackson and Marta Gore. Caro draws us in to stylized land-scapes, as color rules her brush. Marta uses bold color and light to breathe life into her work. Both draw from their travels, and impressions of the world around them. North Texas artists Jesse Sierra Hernandez and Fabiola Valenzuela will utilize Fort Works Art gallery for an exploration of cultural identity titled Out Of Focus – through mixed-medium representations that showcase Latinx roots, sociopolitics, and personal claims of cul-ture. Out Of Focus’ unique installations and multi-faceted work poses a first generation perspective of displacement. In FWA’s upper gallery, My Eyes Are Up Here will feature figu-rative artists Kate Stipp and Megan Van Groll’s artistic revelations of the various aspects of femininity. In the satellite gallery, Adam Palmer will show a series of abstract drawings and installations that are vibrant with fine lines of intentional color titled, The Sentimental Circus.

Gallery 414 presents Well Dressed Secrets featuring Heather Boaz, Ollie Gee and Riley Padgett. A collection of paintings, photographs and drawings, Well Dressed Secrets is a glimpse into vague and voy-euristic worlds. Heather Boaz creates mixed media works that blur the line between still life and collage. Ollie Gee uses a variety of media to humorously explore and visualize the ontology of the American condition. Riley Padgett paints onto the vast darkness of velvet, creating loose and lively forms inspired by tattoo imagery and lore.

When Americans Samuel and Myrna Myers went to Paris in the mid-1960s, they became so enamored with the city that they decided to make their home there. This was where they built an extraordinary collection that until now has never been exhibited publicly. Over the course of more than 40 years, the Myers assembled some 5,000 works of art that, together, offer a very personal vision of the world of Asian art. This exhibition will present over 400 objects selected from this remarkable collection, with works representing key periods in the history of the art of China, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Korea and Vietnam.

Vertebrate Vanguard, a group of mixed-media works and drawings, represents Nathan Porterfield’s output between early 2016 and the present. Informed by an ongoing, ever-changing set of stimuli, this body of work peers into the absurd and the hierarchy of existence. Humanoid characters sit, absurdly fixed in portraits that seem to simultaneously proclaim their status and display their flaws; each a para-dox, each a question and an answer; each a member of the Vertebrate Vanguard.

She has exhibited both nationally and internationally, at venues including: the TATE Modern, Cannes Court Métrage, the Reykjavik Art Museum, and CICA Gallery in South Korea. Her recent work, “You Belong to Me,” was a finalist for the prestigious Lumen Prize and Aesthetica Prize.
