0 Think, O God, of our friends who are ill, whom we now commend to Your compassionate re-gard. Comfort them upon their sickbed and ease their suffering. We beg for deliverance, and submit that no healing is too hard for the Lord, if it be His will. We therefore pray that You bless our friends with Your loving care, re-new their strength, and heal what ails them in Your loving name. Thank you Lord

Why do we need the Holy Spirit

We need the Holy Spirit for many reasons. One major reason we need the Holy Spirit is that Jesus told us that we do. Jesus says, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whose the Father will send in my name, will teach you eve-rything and remind you of all that I told you.” The Holy Spirit is our helper. He aids our weakness. We are not strong enough to live the entirety of Christian life or combat the devil, so God sends us his own Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness. He teaches us. He strengthens us He fills us with God’s love. In the 40 days of Easter, Jesus renews the faith of the Apostles. At his Passion, the Apostles fled, they denied Jesus, and they lost their faith after Jesus died. In His Resurrection appearances, Jesus forgives their sin, illumi-nates their hearts to the truth, and prepares them to go out and spread the Gospel in a new way. Jesus removes the obstacles to the Holy Spirit so that they would be ready to receive Him at Pentecost. What are the obstacles which Jesus had to remove? It is easy to note that sin is an obstacle. To betray Jesus and swear, you don’t even know Him is a sin. Jesus forgives their sin, but underneath their sin is other damage that needs repairing. For example, Peter has distorted thinking. He believed that he was superior to the other apos-tles and would stay with Jesus when the others would not. We know how this turned out, but did you ever imag-ine the impact it had on Peter? When the Jesus’ prophecy of Peter’s betrayal came true, Peter wept, but what next? I imagine he was living in shame. I think this is why he wanted to go back to fishing. He could not see ANY way forward to life with Christ. Jesus delivered Peter from this not so much through confession or the forgiveness of sins but through means of renouncing the lies and confessing the truth. The truth is that Peter is a weak man, but that Jesus loves him anyway and meets him in his weakness. In the light of the truth, Peter is able to resume the role Jesus gave him. We, too, have distorted thinking which gets in our way. It is not so much unconfessed sins as lies, judgments, and false beliefs which we embrace and obscure from us the truth about God. In this last week of Easter before the Ascension, let us prepare our hearts through Hope in God. Of ourselves, we have little hope of change. Myself, I often feel the poverty of my weakness. It causes me pain. I sometimes wonder also if there is any path forward from them. There is a way, but that way requires faith. The Apostles had to take into their hearts what Jesus revealed in Easter and put it into practice. Namely, Jesus said for them to remain in the city and pray until the advocate came. The Apostles remained in the city until Pentecost when the Spirit overcame their weakness. Finally, as we approach Pentecost, let us also pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. I realize that prayer to the Holy Spirit is often exclusively associated with the Charismatic Renewal. I think God has done significant work in the church through them. However, the Holy Spirit does not belong to them. The Holy Spirit is not an op-tional spirituality in the church. The Holy Spirit is God, and if we are to live the Christian faith and certainly if we are to evangelize, we need him. It is alright to not fully understand this, as long as you pray and ask God to fulfill it for you. The Apostles did not understand either, and they prayed, and God overcame their weakness. Finally, let us look to Mary. Her presence with the Apostles at Pentecost and Easter is often overlooked. From the scriptures, all we know is that Mary was present at Pentecost. My faith tells me, however, she was an indis-pensable aid in assisting their prayer. Therefore I propose that we also turn to her. Let us ask Mary to introduce us to the Holy Spirit in the way that God intends for us. I highly encourage everyone to make the Pentecost Novena concluding with the Pentecost vigil on Saturday June 8th. Let us together invite the Holy Spirit into our lives and our parish and see what he does in us. Fr. Campeaux
