1 Dear Friends, We are now in the season of Lent, moving towards Easter week climaxed by Resurrection Sunday. Lent has been traditionally a season for sacrifice to prepare yourself for Easter Sunday. What is the reason for this sacrifice? The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer , penance , repentance of sins, almsgiving , atonement and self-denial . The preparation time is for clearing our minds and souls of all the worldly clutter that has accumulated in our lives over the past year. It is to help us clear away the obstacles we have placed between us and Jesus. During Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence in order to align oneself to Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion. Of course, our simple “sacrifices” do not come even close to what Jesus offered for our sins, but in a small way it may help us draw closer to Him, to appreciate more what he has done for us. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days beginning with Ash Wednesday, in commemoration of the forty days which, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent, before beginning his public ministry, fasting in the desert, after which he endured temptation by the Devil. From this moment on, Jesus began to teach, perform miracles, call out 12 disciples to follow him, and move ultimately towards Jerusalem and the cross. I would hope that all of you would take some time during your busy schedules and reflect upon the sacrifice that Jesus offered to all of us, to come and celebrate on Easter Sunday our Lord’s resurrection, and then to revitalize your own ministry for Him. Dear Friends,

We are now in the season of Lent, moving towards Easter week climaxed by Resurrection Sunday. Lent has been traditionally a season for sacrifice to prepare yourself for Easter Sunday. What is the reason for this sacrifice?

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial.

We have much to celebrate, so please join us Easter Sunday for our Halleluiah Breakfast on March 27 from 9:00 till 10:30 AM in the SPPC Fellowship Hall. All are welcome!

Wednesday night dinners and classes will not be held in March—we’ll start up again on April 6. Classes being offered will be these: How Spanish Works, Life After Loss (see below), and Romans Part II (lessons 8-14).

The Discovering the Bible Class will be off on March 17 and March 24, and will start back up on March 31.

Life After Loss is a support group that will connect you with others who have experienced the loss of a loved one and give you resources on your grief journey. The group is open to anyone struggling with the death of a loved one. As each session builds upon the last, it is best to attend all seven sessions, and no newcomers will be admitted after the second session. (6:30-8:00 starting Wednesday April 6) To register or for more information on additional offerings of the Life After Loss series, contact Heather Walchar, 901-7300.

The March movie in our A Great Cloud of Witnesses will be Friday, March 4, at 7:00 in the Fireside Room. THIS IS ONE WEEK EARLIER THAN USUAL. Bring a snack to share and join us as we view and discuss Hotel Rwanda.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner groups will gather on March 18. Hosts are the Jongewaards and Darlene Spencer. Participants should watch for more information from their hosts.

Pastor Faith will continue to lead the Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be Sunday School Class through March 6. THEN, THERE WILL BE A BRAND NEW CLASS—STARTING APRIL 3 AND RUNNING THROUGH JUNE 5. That class will use a book Christianity 101: Tracing Basic Beliefs to look at the historical, Biblical, and theological roots of our core Christian beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. If you’ve wondered why we believe what we believe—how Christian faith developed—this class may be for you! Books will be available in mid-March. Participants are asked to prepare for the first week of class by reading Part 1: Central Historical Events.

I hope you have been enjoying this warm weather, which is great for outside play and quality family time! As you plan your spring calendars, please be sure to include the opportunities we provide for spiritual growth, family time, and fun through the Children's Ministry of San Pedro! Our upcoming events are listed below. March is an especially busy month, what with Spring Break and Holy Week back-to-back! The Children's Choir will sing in both services on Palm Sunday (with the adult choir) on March 20. And please note that our annual Easter Egg-stravaganza will be on March 26 at 9:30 a.m. This is not only a wonderful family tradition but a great time to invite friends to an event at our church! There will be Sunday School on March 6, but not on the 13th or 27th (Easter

Sunday). We will have a special time of breakfast on Palm Sunday during the Sunday School hour. We will also be passing out palm branches to the children before the 11:00 service. They will be guided through the sanctuary to wave them around, celebrating Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem!

SPPC Kids Mission Opportunity! Keep on filling your fish banks!

San Pedro Kids (ages 3 and up) have been given one of these colorful fish banks and asked to fill them with spare coins and bills from their allowances, family, friends, and neighbors. We are helping the PCUSA raise funds for One Great Hour of Sharing, which enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. Please bring the banks back to the church on Easter Sunday (March 27)!

Have you ever wished you could compete in the world-famous Olympics? Perhaps even win a gold medal?! If your

answer is yes, pack your athletic bag, because you are invited to enter the adventure-filled race of San Pedro’s

VBS Summer Games!

At VBS, you and your fellow athletes will cheer each other on as you create, play, learn, and grow in your

understanding of what it means to train in godliness. 1 Timothy 4:7-8 says, “Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily

training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to

come.” Running with Jesus is the best thing you can do! Together, we will train our faith in the areas of COMMITMENT,

FOCUS, STRENGTH, and ENDURANCE!

Families, reserve JUNE 14-17 in your summer calendar now. And church members, we

need your help! Please pray about and consider being a VBS volunteer or group leader.

If you are crafty, athletic, fun, organized, energetic, musical, or good at anything at all,

we can use you! Rather, let God use you and see what happens! Please contact Dawn

Reiss, Director of Children’s Ministry ([email protected]) or Ellyce Warns

([email protected]) if you are interested. Be blessed as God uses you to bless our

children!

STEPHEN MINISTRY: GOD'S LOVE IN ACTION

TO BE A STEPHEN’S MINISTER— I have wondered what that would mean since the first class five years ago. I was asked to be a member of the last class. Like so many Stephen Ministers I have talked to, they wondered, as I have, why we were asked. For me I have decided that my gift for a very long time has been to hug someone to let them know I care and love them. You don’t always know where a person is in his or her life so a hug might be just what they need at that moment. I truly believe each person is one of God’s creations. As a Stephen Minster, I hope this comes through as a ministry to a care receiver. Anyone needing a hug, come see me—I give HUGS for free! -Sherry L. Closner
