August has come and gone with little fanfare; the month was slow for our Lodge with the exception of Vice President James Smitley’s visitation early in the month. I would like to thank all our members that helped make this visitation a real success. Mike Perry cooked a delicious meal, and Shirley and Don Hollister did a great job as our greeters. The officers did a wonderful job during the meeting, which brought many accolades from the District officials. Thank you all for making our little Lodge look so good to the district officials and other lodges in our district. The other event in August was the GLMA fundraiser held at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Solvang on August 17 th . Due to the fact that we’re in the center of our District, our Lodge is responsible for helping put on this function. Pat Sadecki, PER and a GLMA trustee, was in charge of hosting the event and did a great job getting a crew together. Thank you to Gary and Jeanette Skippon, Sally Griswold, Georgia Daighton and Taylor Bolte for serving up a great meal, and to Rebecca Lewis for doing a super job hosting the bar. Thanks also to Lyle Bolte, Cary Boles, Keith Hinchcliffe and Kelley Sadecki for all their help. September has a wonderful lineup of Friday night meals, organized by Sally Baldwinson. We’ll have an additional dinner this month as we host the DDGER Visitation of Terry Gicking on September 19 th . We will have New York strip steak, baked potato, corn, salad and dessert. Mike Perry will once again be cooking and we do need help in the kitchen to plate up food. Please let me know if you can help behind the scenes, and plan to stay for the Lodge meeting afterwards! We will have the boy scouts here once again to serve. The September 15 th bus trip has been cancelled due to a lack of interest. Thanks to those that signed up, but we needed upwards of 45 people to make the trip work. I would be happy to try again with a little input from members as to what would make you more interested in joining the trip. Or input on any other fun event for our members to enjoy! WAGONAIRS NEWSThere were seven rigs who camped at the Lompoc

Lodge in July. They had a Friday night dinner and several of us enjoyed this from cook your own steak and chicken to fish and chips. The lodge also offered lunch and Sunday breakfast.

We had new members to the club, Bob and Nancy Beaucamp and Sheri, Jim Kannas, and Shawn and Tamara Jewell, join us. Some of us enjoyed shopping and the swap meet, and we played poker and 31, of course. On Saturday, we enjoyed Keith's spaghetti and side dishes.

The weather held up perfectly and our camp host, Mrs. Duncan, was very obliging. It was decided by this group that we would propose Lompoc Elks as a future campout site. An August campout was discussed, however with activities already planned, this group did not set one.

Happy Camping-Judy Hinchcliffe (filling in as scribe for Wilma who didn't attend).

Remember, September campout is at El Chorro on the 27th-29th. Please contact Monte and Olivia Larsen to reserve your spot. You don't want to miss out. Location is between San Luis and Morro Bay. This is always a great place as spots are individual.

ELK OF THE MONTHThis month’s Elk of the Month is Associate Member Greg Packham. Greg has been so very helpful since he associated with our Lodge a year ago: he has filled in during meetings for

absent officers, he has been here to help with some of our biggest off-site catering events, and most recently was here to cook a wonderful Friday night meal of smoked brisket. Greg is the Exalted Ruler of the Yucca Valley Elks Lodge and is truly working hard for Elkdom. Thank

you, Greg, for all your work here at our Lodge.

2640’S NEWEST MEMBERSOn August 15th, we initiated four members,

and look forward to them being active, involved Elks! Please welcome them warmly when you see them at the Lodge or in the community.

Pictured are Christine Goldie and her proposer Gary Skippon, Aaron Rhodus and his proposer (and Dad!) Bob Rhodus, and Bodie Bettencourt and Josh Ward, with their proposer Becca Lewis. Welcome, all, and we look forward to seeing you often.

CALLING ALL SYV ELKSAs summer vacations draw to a close, and we get back into the routine that fall presents,

we invite you to step up your participation in your Elks Lodge. Just pay your dues? Add in reading the Bugle. Read the Bugle? Come on down to the Lodge to visit. Already partake now and again? Come to a dinner. Enjoy dinner? Help out at our many volunteer opportunities, onsite and off. Already a helper? Come to Lodge meetings. Won a member draw at a meeting? (Nah, you haven’t been to enough meetings!) OK, been to meetings regularly? Consider sitting on a committee, heading a committee (it takes as much as you put into it), or making suggestions that could make our Lodge better. Want to make those suggestions a reality? Consider running for an office when nominations come up in February. It's possible there will be plenty of opportunities for participation. Talk to your current officer corps to find out what’s involved--we’d love to help you!

NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE TERRY GICKING TO VISIT SYV #2640Following is the official biography of our District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Terry Gicking, who

will be visiting our Lodge for dinner and a meeting on Thursday, September 19th. Please plan to attend, and remind him what wonderful members we have!

Terry moved to Thousand Oaks in the summer of ’59 at the age of 3. He has basically never left. After graduating from High School, Terry got into the construction industry, which was booming at the time. Seemed like half his graduating class did as well.

With his Father as sponsor, he became a member of Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge #2477 along with his two brothers in May of 1981. He quickly became involved and was elected Secretary during 1984-85. In 85-86, he also assisted the ritual team as the candidate and Thousand Oaks won the District competition, the first time for their lodge.

Terry weaved his way through the appointed chairs while his kids were growing up. He also coached both Bryan & Carol Ann’s sports teams. Finally he got serious in going through the Chairs, becoming ER in 2009-10.

Terry is a past President of the T.O. Elks bowling league, and past President of the PER association the last 2 years. He is a member of his lodge’s Veterans committee, and very active in the Ventura County Stand Down for the homeless Veterans. Since 2010, he has been the Orientation Chairman for his lodge.

As District Piggy Bank Chairmen, he helped rally the lodges to win the Leading Knights Challenge the last 3 years, and was recognized as “Outstanding District Chairman North, 2012-13”. The district as a whole helped donate over $200,000, helping CHEA reach the $3 million mark this year!

His oldest son Steve became a member and now resides in Oregon. Youngest son, Bryan, was just initiated by his Dad last February on PER night. Terry also has a daughter, Carol Ann. His brother Bart is a member of the Elks in Moreno Valley, CA, and his sister Ann is scheduled to be initiated into the Yucca Valley Lodge on September 18th.

Terry’s hobbies include softball, fishing, boating and hitting the little white ball into the trees (golf).

During his 32 years of being involved wi th h is lodge , Terry has a lways remembered the primary goals of the men who started his lodge and Elkdom in general. Elks Lodges are a place to have fun with others while doing activities that benefit our community. He is proud to be a part of the BPOE! “Best People On Earth”!

Terry is also proud to carry the message of the new Grand Exalted Ruler, Millard C. Pickering, throughout the district. “Elks Live, Elks Give” which goes hand in hand with our Official Motto “Elks Care, Elks Share”. Be sure to visit with Terry when he comes to your lodge. He is always looking for those friends he hasn’t met yet!
