Parish Mission Statement The people of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish seek to Grow in Christ and follow His teachings.

The Annual Bishop’s Appeal will be coming soon to our parish. The bishop mailed his letter earlier than we expected this year, and typically we are asked to play the video for the appeal in September. That is still our intention, although some of you

have already submitted your pledges to the appeal. (We are very grateful for those responses!) The appeal video is a reminder to us of the beauty of Christian hope. We wish to be people of hope in a world that needs it. The story of human history is always fraught with tragedy and distress, and indeed our current affairs are not exempt from such tribulation. However, we still have reason to hope. For our part, we know, is not to seek a salvation that is simply of this world alone. We live in a world that is fallen, and instead of giving in to the temptation toward despair as we find solving life’s problems more like a game of “whack-a-mole,” we rather lift our eyes up and see the real solution outside of this broken cosmos. Love is a revolution from this system. God, who is Love, is beyond this fallen world order, and is not corrupted by it. When we are His, totally and unabashedly, we continue that revolution amidst the fallout of sin and egoism. And that is a seed of hope. And that hope is contagious. May we shine the light of Christian hope through our joyful deeds of love each day. Our former parochial vicar, Fr. Augustine Mugarura, who has been with us most of this summer, is returning to his pastoral obligations in Uganda on August 31, so August 29th will be his last Sunday with us. He wanted you all to know that he was happy to be back at his former parish assignment. He was very glad to share good memories with many of you. He is thankful for your continued friendship and generosity. He wishes you God's blessings and protection now and forever. Please say a prayer for his priestly ministry and for his diocese of Fort Portal, Uganda. -Fr. Terry

TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 22, 2021 3

FROM THE DESK OF FR. STEPHEN

My dear brothers and sisters,

It has been over a year since my last bulletin column, and at the time (as I’m sure all of you remember ;) I wrote on prayer. And having been given an opportunity to compose once more for you, I return to this topic, for prayer is our lifeline to God. Without it, we flag, we fail, we fall. Let me tell you a brief story: When I had returned from Afghanistan in 2010 and began taking my faith seriously and truly in earnest, I encountered a very holy priest who was my chaplain at Fort Richardson. He was a wonderful confessor and an incredibly humble man (a preacher with a stutter, surely not a light cross). His bulletin columns did so much to inspire the flame of devotion in my poor soul that I saved them, and as I sat down to write this, I realized I hadn’t looked at them in close to ten years. So, in my desire to write you something of value, I pulled them all out-the first one I grabbed was dated September4th, 2011, and on it was a picture of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton-how’s that for a good sign! And what is best, it contained an excerpt from a biography on the saint concerning growth in prayer! Here is that excerpt in full, from Mrs. Seton: Foundress of the American Sisters of Charity (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1962), pp.339-341. “It can be imagined what an explosive effect the ardent, realistic holiness of such a soul as Elizabeth’s must have had on her Sisters. She herself told [Father] Gabriel Brute that she was a torpedo among them, for they tell the Superior I strike their very joints when I say a word.” Due allowance being made for her humility-that she did not talk to Brute of her maternal tenderness, her essential sympathy and understanding-it is evident that, speaking formally to all the Sisters in

a body, she adopted a “no-nonsense,” attitude. She had no patience with doddering or meandering in the spiritual life-patience in such serious matters as salvation or perfection was always her short suit: she had no patience, for example, wit the smug assumption of certain Protestants that they would be saved with a minimum of striving, no patience with priests who did not exploit the awesome possibilities of their office to the full. Because of this peremptory readiness to cut to the heart of things, her conferences to her religious daughters were a delight of practicality and sense, couched in the simple, direct, logical words and examples of the teacher. To attain an interior life, she told them: “You must be in right earnest, or you will do little or nothing. What sort of interior life would you lead, if every time the door opens, or if anyone passes you, you must look up; if you must hear what is said though it does not concern you? Or if you remain silent and in modest attention to your duty, what would be your interior life, if you let your thoughts wander from God?” There is an astonishing similarity here to the plain talk St. Vincent de Paul used in addressing his first daughters; in fact, Elizabeth’s formula for perfection was identical with that of St. Catherine Laboure, the future Daughter of Charity and Seer of our Lady who, still a child on her father’s farm when Elizabeth was speaking, would be nurtured on Vincent’s simplicity. Catherine’s formula was: to do what she was supposed to do, as well as she could, and for God. Elizabeth elaborated it for her daughters in this way: “What was the first rule of our dear Savior’s life? You know it was to do His Father’s Will. Well, then, the first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner He wills it; and thirdly, to do it because it is His Will. I know what His Will is by those who direct me; whatever they bid me do, if it is ever so small in itself, is the Will of God for me. Then do it in the manner He Wills it-not sewing an old thing as if it was new, or a new thing as if it was old; not fretting because the oven is too hot, or in a fuss

because it is too cold. You understand-not flying and driving because you are hurried, nor creeping like a snail because no one pushes you. Our dear Savior was never in extremes. The third object is to do this Will because God Wills it, that is, to be ready to quit at any moment, and to do anything else we may be called to.” The fundamental practice of all religious life-the constant walking in the presence of God-was stripped of all verbiage so that the slowest Sister could not miss it: “You will never receive any lively impressions of grace until you overcome…dissipation of mind. If you are ever so fervent at your prayers, or desire every so much to be good, it will be like putting hartshorn [smelling salts] in a bottle and leaving the cork out. What will it be worth? So all the prayers, readings and good talk you love so much will be to little purpose, unless you place a sentinel at the door of your heart and mind. You often lose in ten minutes by your dissipation of mind more than you had gained a whole day by mortification.” At times she would be overcome by the longing of the saints and would cry out: “How is it that many of us keep the rule as to the letter of it, and also look pious enough-there is no want of good will, nor idleness indulged-and in a house where it would seem so easy to become saints, you would say, what is the matter? Why are we not saints? Why is there so little progress in perfection, or rather, why are so many tepid, heavy, discouraged, and going along more like slaves in a workhouse than children in their own home and the house of their Father? Why? Because we do not watch over our interior, do not watch the impulse of nature and grace in our actions, nor avoid the occasions of the habitual faults we live in when it is in our power, or keep a good guard on ourselves when it is not. Frequent indulgences of useless thoughts, inconsiderate words, expressions of natural feelings and change of temper, all stand at variance with our sweet interior life, and stop the operation of divine grace, too often indeed even to grieving the divine Spirit and sending Him away.

May our patron saint’s life and words be for your benefit.
