ANNOUNCEMENTS
In September, our students are settling in to their classrooms, learning routines for class meetings and tools for problem solving and jumping into the curriculum for their grade level. Teachers and specialists are conducting initial assessments so that we understand students’ skills and needs as they enter this school year and so we can better address individual needs. As a school, we’re looking at this information and our data from last year to decide how to focus our school resources for professional development, intervention and parent support. The District music program is up and running and our PS Arts and Spanish Music programs are launching mid-month. It’s a busy and very productive time of the year! I also want you to be aware of two national observances and how Edison celebrates them.
Constitution Day – On September 17,1787, the United
States Constitution was signed, establishing the framework of the U.S. government and the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today. As we teach about the agreements that the newly-established nation made about how to self-govern, our students also develop constitutions and rights they want to have in their classrooms. They adopt, sign and present their constitutions to the school at an assembly on Wednesday, September 14
th.
National Hispanic Heritage Month – especially during the period from September 15 to October 15, we recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture. Heritage Month begins on September 15 with the anniversary of independence in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile follow on September 16 and September 18, respectively. We continue observing through mid-October and Día de la Raza (October 12), which focuses on the history and diversity of the Latino community and all the ethnic and cultural influences that make it distinctive. We observe this month in many ways integrated into classroom instruction, with a Kindergarten Dias de Independencia Tostada Potluck, and this year with the dedication of our new mural in the main courtyard. The mural provides a visual metaphor about migration of people, ideas and animals in our hemisphere and how we are “together through two languages.” Watch for additional information about Hispanic Heritage Month and the mural dedication over the next few weeks.
Volunteer Training – If you are a new volunteer

Playground Access is a free CREST program
that provides supervised access to the playground after school as follows: 1
st and 2
nd graders – for 30 minutes
after dismissal (either at 2:45 on regular days or 1:35 on Wednesdays or minimum days); 3-4-5 graders – 2 hours and 15 minutes after dismissal (either 3:00 on regular days or 1:50 on Wednesdays or minimum days). There are exceptions for younger children who have an older sibling staying with them or who are participating in other CREST Club programs. Please see CREST Coordinator Kim Martínez for more information (Room 206, ext. 61-206, or at [email protected]). Please note: 1) parents must register children and provide emergency contact information, 2) the program is cancelled if it rains AND 3) there are financial penalties for late pick ups.
School Smarts Academy – Are you interested
in learning how to be effectively involved in your child’s schooling – as a partner and an advocate? The School Smarts Academy is designed to help you do just that – in a small supportive group of other Edison parents. The program will meet at the time when the most interested parents are able to gather – in the morning, at lunch time or in the evening. Sign up information was included in last week’s packet – or stop by the office and pick up another flyer or contact Yoly Gutierrez at ext. 61-312 or email her at [email protected] if you would like to grab one of the 35 spots available spots.
Picture Day – Edison’s picture day will be
Friday, September 16. Please note that the date has been changed from the day on the “Refrigerator Sheet” in the first day packet. On picture day, Cornerstone Photography takes a photograph of each class and child. They make a variety of different packages of portraits and a class photo available for purchase at a reasonable prices – IF YOU WISH TO PURCHASE PHOTOS. Please review the information from Cornerstone, and if you are purchasing photos, enclose payment, and return the envelope on photo day. You also have the option of paying on- line.

ANUNCIOS
En septiembre, nuestros estudiantes se están acostumbrando a sus
salones, aprendiendo rutinas para las reuniones de clase y herramientas para
resolver problemas y lanzándose al curso de estudios para su nivel de grado.
Los maestros y especialistas están conduciendo asesoramientos iniciales
para que podemos comprender las habilidades y necesidades de los
estudiantes mientras entran al año escolar y para que mejor podamos
identificar las necesidades individuales. Como escuela, estamos mirando
esta información y nuestros datos del año pasado para decidir cómo enfocar
nuestros recursos escolares para el desarrollo profesional, intervención y
apoyo para los padres. El programa de música del distrito ya comenzó y
nuestros programas de PS Arts y de Música en Español comienzan a medio
mes. ¡Es un tiempo muy ocupado y productivo del año! También quiero
que estén alertas de dos observaciones nacionales y cómo Edison las
celebra.
Día de la Constitución – el 17 de septiembre, 1787, se firmó la
Constitución de los Estados Unidos, estableciendo la fundación del
gobierno de los Estados Unidos y los derechos y libertades que gozamos
hoy. Mientras enseñamos sobre los acuerdos que la nación nuevamente
establecida lo que hizo sobre cómo auto gobernar, nuestros estudiantes
también crean constituciones y derechos que quieren tener en sus salones.
Ellos adoptan, firman y presentan sus constituciones a la escuela en una
asamblea el miércoles, 14 de septiembre.
Mes Nacional de Herencia Latina – especialmente durante el
periodo del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, reconocemos las
contribuciones de Latino Americanos e Hispano Americanos a los Estados
Unidos y celebramos la herencia y cultura del grupo. El Mes de la Herencia
comienza el 15 de septiembre con el aniversario de la independencia en
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. México y
Chile siguen el 16 de septiembre y 18 de septiembre respectivamente.
Continuamos observando hasta mediados de octubre y el Día de la Raza (el
12 de octubre), el cual se enfoca en la historia y diversidad de la comunidad
Latina y todas las influencias étnicas y culturales que la distinguen.
Observamos este mes en muchas maneras integradas en la instrucción del
salón, con el Convivio de Tostadas de Kindergarten por los Días de la Independencia, y este año con la dedicación de nuestra nueva muralla en el
patio principal. La muralla provee una metáfora visual sobre la migración
de gente, ideas y animales en nuestro hemisferio y cómo estamos “juntos a
través de dos idiomas.” Esperen información adicional sobre el Mes de
Herencia Latina y la dedicación de la muralla en las siguientes semanas.
Entrenamiento de Voluntarios - Si ustedes son voluntarios nuevos o es tiempo de renovar, por favor vengan al entrenamiento el lunes, 12 de septiembre a las 8:30 a.m. en la cafetería. ¿No están seguros de su estatus? Comuníquense con Yoly Gutiérrez en extensión 61-312 o [email protected].
Acceso Al Patio - es un programa gratis de
CREST que provee acceso supervisado al patio después de clases en lo siguiente: estudiantes de 1º y 2º grado – por 30 minutos después que salgan de clases (de las 2:45 p.m. en días regulares o de la 1:35 los miércoles y en días mínimos); estudiantes en los grados 30, 4º y 5º - 2 horas y 15 minutos después de salir de clases (de 3:00 en días regulares y de 1:50 los miércoles y en días mínimos). Hay excepciones para niños menores quienes tienen hermanos mayores quedándose con ellos o quienes participan en otros Programas de Club CREST. Por favor hablen con la Coordinadora de CREST Kim Martínez para más información (salón 206, extensión 61-206 o en [email protected]). Por favor noten: 1) los padres deben registrar a los niños y proveer información de contactos de emergencia, 2) el programa se cancela si llueve Y 3) hay consecuencias financieras cuando recogen tarde a los niños.
Academia de Inteligencias Escolares – ¿Están interesados en aprender cómo estar involucrados efectivamente en la educación de su hijo/a – como socio y abogado? La Academia de Inteligencias Escolares está diseñada para ayudarles hacer justo eso – en un grupo pequeño de apoyo do otros padres de Edison. El programa se reunirá en el horario del cual la mayoría de padres puedan reunirse – en la mañana, en la hora del almuerzo o en la noche. Información para apuntarse fue incluida en el paquete de la semana pasada – o pasen por la oficina y recojan otro volante o comuníquense con Yoly Gutierrez en la extensión 61-312 o mándenle un correo electrónico a [email protected] si les gustaría reservar uno de los 35 espacios disponibles.
Día de Fotos–El Día de Fotos de Edison se llevará a cabo el viernes, 16 de septiembre. Por favor noten que la fecha cambió de la que teníamos en la “Hoja de Refrigerador” en el paquete del primer día. En el día de fotos, Cornerstone Photography toma fotos de cada clase y cada niño/a. Hacen una variedad de diferentes paquetes de retratos y una foto de clase disponibles para comprar a precios razonables - SI USTEDES DESEAN COMPRAR Fotos. Por favor revisen la información de Cornerstone, y si ustedes van a comprar fotos, envíen el pago y el sobre en el día de fotos. También tienen la opción de pagar por internet.

We will have our volunteer training on September 12 at
8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. If you haven’t done your
training and you want to be an Edison volunteer, please
arrange your schedule so that you may attend. You can
also get a head start by filling out the form available in
Yoly’s office and getting your TB test done.

Programa de Enriquecimiento de Música Coral Después de Clases en Edison
Edison está contenta de ofrecer un programa de música en español después de clases para los estudiantes del 3º y 4º grado. El programa será enseñado por Maestra
Jacqueline Fuentes.
Este es un programa de enriquecimiento de 25 semanas y se reunirá en el salón 107 los lunes de 3:15 a 4:15 p.m. Dos presentaciones serán parte de este programa.
Las clases se llevarán a cabo en las siguientes fechas

Este programa de enriquecimiento es ofrecido sin ningún costo gracias a los fondos de la Fundación de Educación de Santa Mónica y Malibú (SMMEF). Los niños en el Programa de Cuidado de Niños de Edad Escolar (SAP) o en el Programa de Cuidado de Niños CREST Club regresarán a sus programas después de las 4:15 p.m. Todos los demás niños deben estar registrados con CREST para Acceso al Patio para que puedan esperar a sus padres en el patio de Edison después de la clase o usar Acceso al Patio en caso que la clase sea cancelada por alguna enfermedad de la maestra.
La registración es limitada, así es que entregué la parte de abajo lo antes posible. Se requiere un mínimo de 20 estudiantes para ofrecer la clase y será llena con 35 estudiantes. Si hay más de 35 solicitantes, los niños serán elegidos por sorteo. Padres, por favor asegúrense de que esto sea algo que su hijo/a quiera hacer.
Todas las solicitudes deben ser entregadas a más tardar el miércoles, 7 de septiembre.

Announcing: Choral Music in Spanish After-School Enrichment Program at Edison
Edison is pleased to again offer an afterschool music program in Spanish for 3rd and 4th grade students. The program will be taught by Maestra Jacqueline Fuentes.
This is a 25-week after-school enrichment program and will meet in Room 107 on Mondays from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Two performances will be part of this program
Classes will be held on the following dates:

December 12 December 19 January 23
January 30 February 6 February 13
February 27 March 6 March 13
March 27 April 17 April 24

May 22 Concerts: March 30 and possibly May 25 (Open House)
This enrichment program is offered at no cost thanks to funding from the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF). Children in the School Age Child Care Program (SAP) or CREST Club child care program will return to their programs after 4:15 p.m. All other children should be registered with CREST for Playground Access so that they can wait for parents on the Edison playground after class or use Playground Access in the event that a class is cancelled due to illness of the instructor.
Enrollment is limited, so return the tear-off below as soon as possible. A minimum of 20 students are required to offer the class and it will be capped at 35 students. If there are more than 35 applicants, students will be chosen by lottery. Parents, please make sure that this is something your child wants to do. Applications are due by Wednesday, September 7.
