Iran close to stunning Portugal• Ronaldo sees penalty saved, Ansarifard scores from 12 yards to level things
• After late drama, Portugal go through in second
AFP | Saransk, Russia
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty before Portugal conceded an inju-
ry-time spot-kick in a 1-1 draw with Iran at the World Cup yesterday as the Eu-ropean champions set up a last-16 clash with Uruguay.
Ricardo Quaresma curled in a trade-mark trivela goal on the stroke of half-time at the Mordovia Arena, but Ka-rim Ansarifard’s late penalty dropped
Portugal to second in Group B behind neighbours Spain.
Ronaldo won a second-half spot-kick after a video review but saw his effort saved, with the Real Madrid star unable to add to his four-goal tally at the tour-nament.
Portugal will face Uruguay in Sochi on July 30 for a place in the quarter-finals after ending Iran’s hopes of reaching the knockout phase for the first time.
Fernando Santos will hope Joao Moutinho recovers after the Mona-co midfielder was restricted to a late substitute appearance in Saransk be-cause of illness, with Quaresma one of three changes to the team that defeated Morocco 1-0.
Ronaldo, scorer of all four Portugal goals in his country’s first two games, forced Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand
into an early save after barging his way into the box.
Joao Mario should have put Portugal in front after a defensive mix-up between Saeid Ezatolahi and Beiranvand, but the Inter Milan midfielder blazed over.
Iran’s first genuine sight of goal came on 34 minutes when Ezatolahi directed a firm header from a free-kick straight into the grateful hands of Rui Patricio.
Quaresma fired Portugal ahead just before the interval when he exchanged passes with Adrien Silva before bending home in style from the edge of the area with the outside of his right foot.
Ronaldo had the chance to double the
lead five minutes into the second half after he was upended by Ezatolahi, with a spot-kick awarded following consulta-tion with video assistant referee (VAR).
But the Portugal captain was denied by Beiranvand who dived to his left to smother Ronaldo’s attempt.
Iran coach Carlos Queiroz remonstrat-ed angrily with the officials as Saman Ghoddos appeared to be impeded by William Carvalho inside the area.
There was no VAR intervention on that occasion, but referee Enrique Caceres trotted over to the pitchside monitor after an altercation between Ronaldo and Morteza Pouraliganji.
Salman Al Faraj and Salem Al Dawsari overturn Mohamed Salah’s opener to secure win for SaudiReuters | Volgograd, Russia
Saudi Arabia pulled off a last-gasp 2-1 win over Egypt as the two sides de-parted from Russia yesterday, with
the Saudis notching their first World Cup victory since 1994 and adding to the misery of Egypt’s prolific striker Mohamed Salah.
The Liverpool forward put Egypt ahead but wasted a golden opportunity to double the lead, giving Saudi Arabia the chance to claw their way back into the game that was settled by a 95th-minute winner by midfielder Salem Al-Dawsari.
The result meant Saudi Arabia finished third in Group A as they scored their only goals of the tournament and vastly improved on a 5-0 thrashing by hosts Russia in their opening game.
Egypt finished in last place with no points, a result likely to heap pressure on Argentine coach Hector Cuper.
It was a sad send-off for Salah who missed the opening game of the tourna-
ment with the injury he picked up dur-ing Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May.
Both sides were already packing their bags before they met in the heat of the Volgograd Arena, having failed to pick up a single point between them in their previous group matches.
Nonetheless, Egypt’s hordes of sup-porters roared on Salah whenever he got near the ball and he opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he raced on to Abdallah Said’s long pass and kept his cool to lob Saudi goalkeeper Yasser Al-Mosailem.
That was Salah’s second goal in the
two games he has played in Russia and he should have had another almost im-mediately but somehow missed when put clean through.
He was made to pay for the wasted opportunity deep into first-half stoppage time when Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan awarded Saudi a penalty and Salman Al-Faraj converted from the spot.
Saudi Arabia pressed for a winner in the second half but the game appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw - which would have meant Egypt finished third in the group - until Abdullah Otayf teed up Al-Dawsari to angle his shot past El-Ha-dary

Ronaldo foul sets penalties record
Reuters | Volgograd, Russia
A foul on Cristiano Ron-aldo during Portugal’s
Group B clash against Iran resulted in a record 19th penalty at the World Cup before the knockout rounds.
The Portugal forward was brought down in the box shortly into the second half in Saransk, with the penalty awarded by use of the video assistant referee (VAR).
Although Ronaldo’s spot kick was saved by Iran goal-keeper Alireza Beiranvand, the decision eclipsed the previous record of 18 pen-alties at 2002 World Cup.
Saudi Arabia’s Salem Al-Dawsari scores their second goal
Record-breaking keeper saves penaltyAFP | Volgograd, Russia
Essam El Hadary, the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup,
marked his record achievement with one outstanding penalty save for Egypt but was powerless to stop a second in a 2-1 defeat by Saudi Arabia.
The 45-year-old goalkeeper flew to his right to make a spectacular stop in the 39th minute from Fahad Al-Muwallad’s spot-kick, award-ed for handball, at the Volgograd Arena.
El Hadary was 45 years and 161 days old when he took to the field as the two already-eliminated teams in Group A played only for pride.

matic final group games dominated by VAR decisions.
Fernando Hierro’s Spain, the 2010 world champions, will play Russia in the next round in Moscow on Sunday while European champions Portugal face Uruguay in Sochi previous day.
