SHARE! Magazine is a monthly newsletter about the eZ Ecosystem. It features interviews, pictures, articles, reviews and content related to Open Source software, business and development. You can subscribe to this magazine by clicking here.

For the first time, the conference will be held outside Norway. On June 25th and June 26th, 300 people from more than 30 countries will celebrate in Paris, only a few meters away from the Champes Elysées. There are three different tracks to provide relevant content for a mixed audience. The tracks focus on:

- eZ technology, search technology and PHP related subjects.- Web Content Management, where analysts, consul-tants and partners share their thoughts on new trends in their fields.- Digital Media, where specialists from key internation-al media groups analyse the complex situation of online media companies.

The eZ Conference also provides a unique opportunity to meet the eZ Crew, to actively take part in discussions about future versions of eZ Publish and to get informed about eZ’s strategy as an Open Source Content Man-agement vendor. Developers also have the chance to get eZ Publish certified at the conference.

IT Manager Adam Spindler says: “We’re trying to leverage off-the-shelf applications when-ever possible and as a result, our application development efforts are focused more on integra-tion and being able to extend applications rather than writing them from scratch.”

Spindler continues: “We use PHP to communicate from eZ Publish to our CRM system, by generating XML and then receiving XML back, processing it, and putting it all in,” says Spin-dler. “Everything’s PHP, in fact, strong support for PHP was a key reason that the Energy Saving Trust chose eZ Publish. We liked the idea of PHP beforehand, but it was really the fact that eZ Publish was written in PHP that was the deciding factor,” says Spindler. “Previously we had to have a separate service running to handle our Web requests and basically used it to pass off the requests from Apache to this other service and process it there. But now with the PHP-based solution, it just runs as a plug-in, so it’s far more robust and efficient than before.”

The 451 Group analyzes eZ’s WCM strategy and positioningeZ Systems has been analyzed by the 451 group which is a technology industry analyst company focused on the business of enterprise IT in-novation. The company’s ‘analysts provide critical and timely emerging-technology insight to clients at vendor, investor, services and end-user organizations – insight that aids both strategic and tactical decision making for competitive advantage.

The details in the report says: “Though it only opened its office in Chicago in late 2008, eZ Systems appears to have hit the ground running, in part because of its open source model, which is based primarily on selling support subscriptions; it does not have a dual license or any proprietary code extensions that it sells.

So since all of the code is freely available, the company already has a number of fairly large deployments (one with a state government) that it is now beginning to support commercially.

eZ Systems also does more than three-quarters of its sales via partners and already has about a dozen partners in the US selling implementation services for eZ Publish. The new general manager for North America, Todd McElroy, will be tasked with expanding these relationships, which is something he should know how to do since he formerly ran channels and alliances for RedDot and then Open Text’s WCM group”.

DT: It is proven that the link is strong between the CMS solutions leader eZ Systems and the European leader in the hosting market. As a new partner we want to meet and share with the whole community where the best place is to be at this main event.

eZ: What will be your main focus at the event?

DT: Meeting the community, focusing on their needs and sharing our vision of the scalable and easy to use hosting solutions. We’ll announce new virtual and scalable hosting solutions to sup-port eZ project at all the stages, from design to exploit.

eZ: What do you hope to benefit from this event?

DT: We hope to meet and to develop strong relationships with eZ community and bring them into a new hosting area covering all Europeans markets. For Interoute, eZ Conference is the prefect place to better understand community expectations and to relieve them of the burden of networks and hosting concerns.

eZ Awards & Reception Sponsor interviewWe have had a talk to Thomas Schieke at YMC regarding their sponsorship for the 2009 eZ Conference & Awards in Paris.

eZ: Please introduce yourself and your company

TS: YMC AG is an agency for online brand management and web technology. I am a founding partner of YMC and responsible for key accounts, especially in the media sector. Our services include market analysis, strategy and development. We look back at six years of working with media companies and successful development of media strategies with Open Source software. Besides eZ Publish, we are using Solr/Lucene for projects in the field of Enter-prise Search. Therefore we appreciate the eZ Find initiative. We are also using eZ Components for projects that are not powered by eZ Publish.

eZ: YMC was the first eZ Publish partner in Switzerland. Why did you choose eZ Publish?

TS: In 2003, we conducted an extensive evaluation of the major Open Source CMS systems, among them Mambo/Joomla, Typo3 and Drupal. eZ Publish won because of its flexible database scheme and the software architecture. Both enable us to develop our own extensions. But the main motivation was that eZ Publish is the only Open Source CMS with a commercial vendor backing its development and offering a business partnership. This enables us to work on a much higher level than with pure community products.

eZ: With YMC Volano you have also developed one of the biggest eZ Publish extensions. What is Volano?

TS: We have always tried to write software in a generic way, so that the code could be used by many of our customers. Technically, Volano is an eZ Publish extension comprised of all our im-provements and functionality, most of them from the Social Media field. Volano also integrates other useful OS packages, or third party services like Google Maps and Omniture SiteCata-lyst. In the course of implementing eZ Publish / Volano for our customers, we have also built a clustered caching solution that can perform updates and upgrades on high traffic sites without downtime. Together with the eZ core developer team, we are currently working to issue this as a certified eZ extension.

eZ: So you believe in the Open Source idea?

TS: Absolutely. The days when Open Source was dismissed as the plaything of nerdy techies are over. Today open standards avoid a technology lock- in and correlate with significantly lower costs.

eZ: What kind of customers do you target?

TS: We help Swiss and German media companies to succeed in the sector’s revolution. This includes developing on-line strategy and revenue models for them, helping to improve their editorial processes and of course migrating content from existing CMS installations. The main goals in such projects are usually to create cross-media applications and/or transform consum-ers into contributors. In view of the current fight for attention in the media, we see eZ Pub-lish’s cost-efficiency and flexibility as a competitive advantage.
