Women in the Wind International, Inc. Founded 1979 Editor’s NotesThis is my last issue of STB as the WITW newsletter editor, and I very much appreciate being able to serve you for the past two years. When I took on this role, however, little did I expect the loss of two jobs in a year—the challenges of working in biotech, LOL.

Over this past year we moved from San Diego, CA to Boulder, CO, and most recently to Washington. My son in Portland, OR sent us info regarding a lovely home in a beautiful wooded area, but before we were able to visit, it already was under contract. So, we instead moved into a Vancouver, WA rental.

Well, life is often full of surprises, and after spending a week unpacking boxes, we decided to take a break and visit Mount St. Helens. Along the way, we were reminded of the house that brought is here, decided to check, and saw the house was back on the market. We toured it and made an offer on the same day!

Well, our offer was accepted, so LOL, we are moving yet again! Although tired, we’re excited about our next move, and we feel fortunate to be able to live in such a lovely area.

So in farewell, let me share a photo of the Columbia River, and please do let me know if your ever in Washington. xoxoxo

They Want To Be Us!By Cat Grabowski, International President

Ride CA is a WITW regional event, bringing together the California Chapters (and then some) for afew days of riding, feasting and enjoying each other’s company. It was my good fortune that I wasable to attend and enjoy the company of some of the nicest people, not to mention ride some absolutelyawesome roads! I am most grateful for the generous hospitality extended by International SecretaryDee Norman and the Ladies of Chrome and Leather Chapter. I flew into southern CA, stayedovernight and rode up to Cambria with their group. International Safety Officer Cathie Siglow did

a wonderful job on choosing a beautiful route up to the event. It was a pleasure riding with them.

The Lady Hawks Chapter did an outstanding job of hosting the event at the Cambria Pines Lodge in Cambria, CA. It was attendedby more than 100 members, including sisters from Canada (Edmonton), Arizona, Nevada, DC and, of course, New York! The Re-gional Grant funds (provided by the organization for established multi-day, annually held regional meetings with more than fivechapters and twenty members in attendance) were used to subsidize the Friday evening repast with locally grown strawberries thesize of golf balls, cold cuts, rolls, cheese, crackers, cut fruit and other delectable delights.

A good time was had by all at the banquet on Saturday evening. I was pressed into sharing the story of “The Bee Dance” with thegroup - an all too real incident that occurred on the ride up. Some of you may have seen it posted by Sol Sister Carol Kropp onour FB page. It was the opening to a most entertaining tradition they have - each Chapter in attendance regales the group with thetelling of a Spoon Story. To say they were entertaining is to sell them short. These were tales that ran along the edge of beingbeyond belief…. but they really happened. Each story brought the house down. Some were even reenacted, in part, by the actualparticipants. Each story was secretly judged by Marcia “Sparkle” Moore from the Diamond Roses Chapter - who flew intoSan Francisco from DC, picked up a rented bike and rode down to the event. Both she and I were ineligible to win as we had notridden our bikes to the event….

The Sol Sisters Chapter won and had the privilege of taking the spoon home. Now when I say, “spoon,” I mean, “SPOON.” It isginormous! This thing has to be four (4’) feet tall and, yes, it’s chrome. The rule is it must be transported by motorcycle - no car,no trailer, no anything other than by bike. I had the pleasure of accompanying Fran George, who had the honor of carrying thespoon, for her chapter, back to southern CA. You should have seen the looks…. She appeared to be a large, ice cream sundae, orcup of tea from afar! Or was it a really tall sissy bar? (think Easy Rider)

My gracious hosts changed things up a bit on our ride back and took me on Angeles Crest Highway by way of Tujunga CanyonRoad. Ladies, I can’t thank you enough for an exhilarating tour of some up and down west coast twisties with the most incredibleviews. LOCAL’s Elin Thomas (and Sparky) made a great “rabbit” to chase over the miles of serpentine asphalt. Yes, sparkswere flying as I scraped my boards on more than one turn. And I also proved the theory that you will hit whatever you look at - itwas a rock the size of a golf ball that had rolled into the road from the side of the mountain… I had the whole lane, but, yes, hitthe rock.

Another interesting twist to the weekend occurred when we had two “guests” attending with chapter friends who, literally, paidInternational Treasurer Jett Ford their dues and signed up on the spot. They want to be us! While at Ragged Point with thegroup on Saturday, a young lady, on holiday with her retired police K-9, Dawson, was so taken by our group that she wants to startup a Chapter in Ventura (Has three women on her street who ride.) She wants to be us!

You see it in people’s faces as they gaze out of their car windows, aheads turning to follow us as we pull into a parking lot, querying,in wonderment, “All women?” They want to be us. I was fueling up at a gas station and gave a chin wave to a gentleman sittingin the front seat of a car, driven by a woman, as he stared out the window while they pulled out. They want to be us. I rememberthe big, pink Cadillac pacing me on the Interstate. And when I looked over, the blue haired driver, grinning from ear to ear, gaveme a thumbs up and sped off. They want to be us. How many times have you incurred the envy of total strangers just by beingyou? They want to be us!

It’s not just how we act or what we do; It’s who we are. It’s our enthusiasm. It’s our example. It’s our courage and daring. It’s ourheart. That’s what the world sees… And they want to be us!

My cat, Snickers, and I are in my office amidpiles and piles of papers related to Medicaid.I am filing a request on behalf for my Motherwho now requires skilled nursing, and she israpidly running out of money. My cat has theright idea; she is sleeping on a pile labeledSocial Security. My other Cat, of theGrabowski family, just reminded me I am twodays late with my STB ar$cle. This providesanother good reason to postpone goingthrough the piles of papers. I am currently making mental lists for my annual summer trip. This year it will be a li%ledifferent. I am riding my bike to NY to visitMom, back to PA to visit two daughters, andmee$ng up with Cat Grabowski and MauraTurner somewhere around Allentown, PA.We will then head west and grab DonnaMcKale on our way to Denver. My last cross

country trip out west was fabulous and I expect nothing less from this one. I am hopingto get to Denver and hooking up with somemembers that are not going right back homeso I can play a li%le longer. I love to sight seeacross this beau$ful country of ours. I amhoping to hit some of the Na$onal Parks onmy trip as well as the WITW display in theNa$onal Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa,Iowa. It is nice when you don’t have a schedule and a Husband who is taking care of thehouse and, of course, Snickers, the cat. I lovemy life.We had a change in the logo items that wereavailable from the She Shore Riders Chapter. The license plates/picture frames were nolonger being made. A chapter inquired aboutthe license plates and wanted to buy someor make them. I told everyone they were discon$nued…but ……wait. A hundred or sowere located in someone’ garage. So, SheShore Riders are back in business with the license plates and photo frames. I am gladthey are available because we have a lot ofnew riders and they are so very cool. My license plate says WITW and with the plateholder, no one has to guess what WITW

means. The fact that I am no longer going to be VPis star$ng to hit me. I may have to have a boxof Kleenex when I write my last ar$cle. Thishas been a wonderful journey from the $meI joined WITW 27 years ago and I am lookingforward to more. I am hoping to be able todevote more $me to my local chapter andencourage more riders to join our group. (The following is a shameless plug): I am alsolooking forward to mee$ng the many Floridariders who will be a%ending the FloridaChapter Challenge on Sept. 22 and 23. Wehave a guest from out of state returning fora second $me. You will recognize her by thebag on her head. Hope to see you there.

I had such a great $me at Ride CA which isthe California regional chapter event andwas hosted by the Lady Hawks Chapter. Thisyear it was held in in Cambria, CA which isabout five miles from the Pacific Ocean andjust south of Hearst Castle and Ragged Point(just below the area where I am sure yousaw on the news the landslide that took outHwy 1). The whole area was beau$ful andthe weather cooperated at least un$l it was$me to ride home – then, it got really hot bythe $me our group made it home. I must say

I was quite impressed with how Lady Hawkspulled off the event with minimal membersin their chapter. It shows that even thesmaller chapters can not only host these regional events but should start thinking abouthos$ng an interna$onal mee$ng by hos$ngwith another chapter. Oh, I almost forgot tomen$on, that my chapter, Ladies of Chrome& Leather (“LOCAL”) will be hos$ng the 5th

Annual Ride CA in 2018 and it looks like wewill be having it in Big Bear which is a beau$ful area in the San Bernardino mountains.Check it out for yourself at

h%p://www.bigbear.com/. At the $me of wri$ng this ar$cle, we havejust started making plans so stay tuned . . . I have spoken to numerous members fromvarious chapters who say their chapter is toosmall and that their area is not the best forhos$ng an interna$onal mee$ng (not closeto an airport a must, and no hotels in the

area that can accommodate a large event). For the mee$ng in Hershey, PA, there werethree chapters who jointly hosted it and I believe only one of those chapters was fromPA. It is such a great experience to host aninterna$onal mee$ng. My chapter jointlyhosted the winter interna$onal in 2013 inPalm Springs, CA with the Sol Sisters chapterof San Diego, which was over an hour awayfrom my chapter and probably at least twohours from San Diego. We had a few “fieldtrip” weekends where we met in PalmSprings during the planning stages and hada lot of fun doing it. So, my point is, THINKOUTSIDE THE BOX! Now, another en$cement is that it usually adds money to yourchapter ki%y. The tshirt sales itself brings ina lot of money. So, I would like to ask thatyou please give serious thought to yourchapter hos$ng a future interna$onal meeting. I look forward to seeing you all in Denver!!

Howdy WITW!I recently a%ended the Ride CA event inCambria, Ca. What a hoot – special shout outto Lady Hawks and everyone who helped.Beau$fully executed. What else can I say? Alovely $me with everyone, including our

Canadian Sisters! I LOVED hanging out withCanadian Cheryl, just watch her around thewater, eh. My favorite part of course was riding along the coast and seeing this line ofmotorcycles in front and behind – we allknow what that feels like! Wow, I want to doit all over again. I’ll not be riding to Summer Interna$onal’sthis $me around. Work is always in the wayof what I want to do, right? I’m a flying inthough! Golden, CO was my very first Interna$onal (Na$onal back then) in 2002ish,eons ago. I was so amazed! Between the “officers mee$ng”, riding to lunch as a hugegroup, classes, the fair across the street,

s$cking my head in the cut out, and finishingoff a fancy dinner with a guest speaker (along $me female rider – a pioneer of sorts ifI recall right). This was also the first $me Imet “Becky Brown” on that Friday nightmeetngreet. She approached me as thoughshe knew me and said, “San Diego would bea great place for a Na$onal.” I was like, “yup”and thinking “ah sheeze, I think I just agreedto something!” You all know how Becky isLOL. Well, we did not host a Na$onal un$l2007, so I was off the hook! Included hereare some pics from 2003 – awfully low resolu$on. I have one of Lil Bit too – first $me I

The weather I have been wai$ng for all winter is finally here and riding season hasbegun. This is my 42nd summer of riding andit is s$ll as exci$ng as it was when I firststarted. My chapter just had our 39th annualride commemora$ng the very first ride thatstarted what is now WITW. Many things havechanged since then but the one that is mostamazing is that years back when I would hearfrom a woman interested in WITW I wouldsend a handwri%en le%er through the postalsystem. Now everything is so fast and seeingwhat our chapters are doing is immediate. Iam so proud every $me I open Facebook andsee group photos of members and everyone

having a great $me riding and showing offtheir bikes. I am truly proud to be thefounder of this organiza$on! Members comeand go as do our officers. I truly miss the people I work so closely with for many years likeGale Collins who was our President for somany years. With each elec$on I lose closefriends but I know that Nancy Ihasz and I willalways be in contact. And now Alani is leavingher post as the STB editor. I always worrywhen there is a changing of the guards withthe newsle%er, but Alani proved that Ishouldn’t worry because she took over thedu$es running. She has done such a fantas$cjob, and again I will miss her style. Good luckto the next editor and look to Alani’s work asa bar to reach. As the person in charge of merchandising Iam always looking for new ideas and thisspring we started selling our logo in gli%erironon ho"ix. We have them in both silverand gold. They can be applied to just aboutanything you can put a hot iron to. Shirts, jeans, flags, and I even saw where members

were pu'ng them on their bike covers. Wesell them for $5 each and encourage chaptersto order them as a group to keep the postagedown which keeps the price down. Also, I have just ordered a new batch ofjacket pins. They are 1 inch round and wehave been ge'ng them in pink, purple andturquoise but this $me I ordered them alsoin red. The cost is $4 but we limit sales to na$onal mee$ngs because if a member boughtone and wanted it shipped it would have tobe sent as a package and cost more than thepin itself. I do have another idea which is thatI can send them with any shirt order whenordering our logo shirts. Just tell your chapterto add in pins when ordering shirts. Thanks to all of you for making me proud ofwhat WITW is in 2017.

Sisters, summer is here! Hope to see all ofyou in Denver at our Interna$onal Meeting! June Safety Event: Chapter Presidents andSafety Officers, please send informa$onabout your June Safety Event to me by July15, 2017. Include a descrip$on of theevent, the date and the number of members who par$cipated. If two or more chapters par$cipated, please tell me how manyfrom each chapter! I hope you had funwhile improving your skills! Con"nua"on of series of ar"cles on GroupRidingCommunica"on: A few years a(er I joinedWITW Ladies of Chrome and Leather, I became Road Captain. I had a lot to learn! However, I had a wonderfully wise SafetyOfficer/Sweep (Twig) who taught me a lot.One of the most valuable things I learnedwas to communicate with the Sweep. While we did not have electronic commu

nica$on systems then, I learned to checkon her o(en. On longer road trips shewould be well aware of the traffic ahead ofthe group and take the le( lane if shethought we were approaching a slow truck, closure of a lane, or heavy traffic. Once Ibecame a be%er observer of the roadahead, it was almost like she would readmy mind when we needed to speed up,slow down, change lanes or pull off theroadway. Twig also let me know when we

were holding up traffic so that I would finda safe place to pull over to let traffic goahead. I suspect that every chapter has afew members like Twig – those who have

ridden enough to be wise but not loud orobvious about it. The SWEEP, Tailgunner, chase bike, drag orother term, is the last rider in the group, large or small. This rider should be one ofthe most experienced and skilled riders inthe group. She should carry:

phone or contact informa$on of•Lead and of des$na$on$re plug equipment •jumper cables for bikes •compressor •first aid kit •sealed medical informa$on on•each riderblanket or sun cover of some type•water•extra bungee cords, string, mask•ing tape or other connectorssmall orange traffic cones, if pos•sible

Why does she have to carry all this? Shehelps any rider who pulls out of the groupand needs assistance. She may also be thefirst responder if there is an accident. DUTIES:

I was surprised last weekend when 9 of usgirls from the Low Country LadiesChapter rode to Florida for a girlsweekend and on the way homewhile stuck in traffic in Georgia a guyon a bike rode up the shoulder ofthe road with no helmet. Hestopped to talk to us and one of theladies pointed at her helmet, helooked surprised he needed a helmet but pulled one out of his saddle

Some bikes have an adjustable air suspension. It is an inflatable air bladder built intothe shocks. The shocks are set at a “preload” se'ng. Thismeans the shock themselves have an adjustment on them and are set at a factory levelwith approximately a 180lb person on thebike. There is usually 5 adjustment se'ngson a shock and preload is usually at 3. Whenyou add a passenger or luggage or both tothe bike the suspension needs to be beefedup so handling of the bike is maintained.

With the addi$on of air suspension, you addair to the bladders for a more comfortableride and less or no “bo%oming out”. Most bikes with air suspension must be donemanually. There is a spot to a%ach a handpump and like pumping up a basketball (Iwon’t start on the whole football thing, Connie) add air to a desired level. They look likeshort valve stems and there is one each forfront and rear shocks. On the newer CanAm’s there is a pump built in which is ac$vated on your dash panel screen. There is a maximum amount of air the shockswill handle. Front are usually less than theback. Front is about 3035psi and back is 5560. Double check with your dealer or in yourowner’s manual for max pressure. !WARNING! do not use a regular air hose to add air.You can rupture the air bladder. Always usea hand pump which can be purchased fromyour dealer or a(ermarket shop.

Don’t know how much to put in? Increase in5lb increments un$l your ride feels right. Andif you have a memory like mine write downwhat the se'ng was for the load so you canset up before you head out.Now if you don’t have air adjust shocks andyou feel your suspension needs to bechanged you or your dealer can change thepreload on your shocks. It usually takes a special tool that you can get if you want to do ityourself. Note to Can Am’s owners while researching for this ar$cle I found that the adjustment area is prone to breaking if notdone correctly and I advise you taking it to adealer to adjust preload. One last thing. You may have air shocks andyour at max pressure but when fully loadedyou’re s$ll bo%oming out. Then bump up thepreload on the shocks!Un$l next $me happy and safe.

Happy 1yr Anniversary Chrome ContessasJuly 8 : How it all began. It all started one winter when our dearfriend Dionna packed her bags and her motorcycle and le( the cold and gloomy winter of Ohio and headed to sunny Florida. Itwas there she met a lovely group of womenthat invited her to join the Island Breezechapter. Life got in the way and Dionna was neededback in Ohio. Over long winter nights andhot coffee, Dionna and her friend Rhonda

talked of star$ng a chapter in the LakeCounty area of Ohio. They knew what theywanted and knew they needed that thirdperson to get the chapter started. Theyknew just the person. Then there were three. With an invita$onto a hot meal and a plan on paper, Dionnaand Rhonda, now known and Hilltopperand Rockin R, called their good friendNancy and pitched the idea and invited herto join the club. Nancy was immediately interested and it was at that mee$ng thethree ladies founded the Chrome Contessas Chapter of Women in the Wind. Soon there were four. Nancy, or Seabiscuit,as she is fondly known, could not wait toshare our ideas with Rochelle. Rochelle didher homework and learned all that shecould about Women in the Wind. Whenshe arrived at the first mee$ng, she hadknowledge and her dues. She was onboardand excited. Rochelle, now known asChelle, was member number four.

All it took was “faith, trust and pixie dust”for member number five. Chrissy, alsoknown as Tink, listened to what the groupwas about. When she a%ended her firstmee$ng, she quickly knew she enjoyedbeing around these crazy women. She wasreluctant at first because she did not havea lot of $me in the saddle. However, shesoon realized these women would be justwhat she needed to get more comfortableand get more wind in her face. EdmontonEdmonton AB Canada

This month I’m sharing a photo of theladies from our Edmonton / Wild RosesChapter who got out there in recogni$onof the 2017 Interna$onal Ride Day. Theweather was on their side for a change itwas sunny, few clouds and fairly warm forup here at this $me of year. There were 10bikes in all & everyone was eager. Many riders had been an$cipa$ng this ride for awhile having recently freed their bikes fromthe confinement of winter storage. A goodturnout ladies. The day ended with a pitstop at Original Joe’s for a bite to eat andmuch needed beverage of choice I’m sure!!This year the photo contest for the Edmonton Chapter is water towers (opera$onal ornot prove it!). The Interna$onal Ride Daygroup managed to find three water towerswhile touring the towns surrounding ourcapital city that’s a good start gals. With areasonably easy to spot item on the agendafor this year’s contest, I’m sure there willbe more ladies willing to par$cipate in thischallenge. The last few years have beenrather slack for entrants so let’s get out

there and snap those pictures of as manywater towers as possible. Don’t forget to include your motorcycle in the photo and, ifpossible, the town name if it’s on the balloon or posted on an informa$on sign closeby. Good luck to ALL who have started tocompile their collec$on. And for the restIt’s not too late to get in the game!!Earlier this year I had relocated to BC so Ihave not been an ac$ve member of theWomen in the Wind Edmonton Chapter in2017. I was reminded that the STB is intended to be a brief overview of what ourChapter has been up to in the currentmonths. In the last 5 years, I’ve sharedmany of our Chapters rides, rallies and rambling moments by being a par$cipant in thegroup ac$vi$es. Quite honestly, especiallyduring our long winters when we can’t ride,it’s not easy to come up with new materialthat is news worthy or interes$ng. I resorted to include a variety of riding events& personal ‘an$cs’ I have experienced overmy 38 years in the saddle. Just because Iconsidered these happenings exci$ngenough to share with you through STB,there are some who disagree. Whether it’sme or my stories ma%ers li%le but the enthusiasm and pizazz with which they wereintended to deliver has diminished. For this

reason, you are currently reading the finalar$cle you’ll have to endure. I have enjoyedsharing our rides, our up & downs and thehighlights of our Chapter and many of myown, memories, moments and of coursethe numerous wildlife encounters I’ve experienced over the years. It was my pleasure to have a pla"orm like STB to sharethese with you. A special thanks to Alanaand Je% for their pa$ence & pu'ng upwith my lack of technology & tardiness during their $me as editors of the STB. Ride safe, put the miles behind you andenjoy the journey ahead! Cheers JaneR.

The riding season is in full swing here inSaskatchewan and it has been Marvelous!!!It seems like it’s been forever since we have

been riding this year! Saskatchewan is a windy province and thelast month it has been more than justwindy it has been blustery with winds ashigh as 90km an hour, that’s 56 mph for oursouthern sisters. Not only is this riding condi$on uncomfortable it is also dangeroushere. I haven’t wanted my Sportster andme to land in the ditch, so I have had to select my riding days. The future looks bright with the WITW Interna$onal Ride Day on the horizon wherewe have planned a trip to meet 2 otherchapters (Bridge City Thunder and PrairieRoses) for a sleep over and sister $me inSwi( Current, Saskatchewan. So lookingforward to this trip and hanging out withmy sisters. We also have some members who will betrying out for the “I Did It My Way” patchesin a few weeks. Our Leanne has been busyplanning out the route, checking for gassta$ons and booking hotel rooms. We arelooking forward to being able to see somenorthern parts of Saskatchewan that wehaven’t seen before.

We have had a number of planned rides already and it always amazes me how wedon’t forget how to ride in forma$on andsafely. The LowCountry Ladies embarked on ouryearly girlsonly trip over the Memorial Dayweekend. KSU was pre%y early inCharleston on Saturday. It was a fairly hotride to Gainesville, Florida where wechecked into our hotel to cool off and goget dinner. The next day we headed off toour only planned des$na$on, Single Vision

Sanctuary. Our sister Pam’s high schoolfriend, Carl Bovard, is the owner and operator. We knew the road leading to the property was dirt so we sent our scout, Kim, onher trike to see if the road was okay to ridedown and our VP, Martha, rode with her.The rest of us pulled off the road andparked in a gravel lot wai$ng for word.A(er what seemed like forever a “nondescript white van came to pick us up”. Wewere wondering if we should get in theback. No candy or jumpsuits were given sowe figured we were okay. It was a goodthing they were able to get us because theroad was not in a condi$on to handle motorcycles no ma%er how good you were ontwo wheels. A(er signing our waivers, weall were introduced to Carl and many of theanimals that have come to live there. Letme tell you, this is a place to visit. Many ofus took the interac$ve tour, which allowedus to not only learn about the different animals that call the sanctuary home, but alsoto touch a few. We got to feed a ruffledlemur named Tarzan. We got up close and

personal with a caracal and fennec foxes.Pam even got to water down Bruiser bear!On our way out Carl introduced us to twonew wolf cubs. They were too young totouch but we got to see them. This is a worthy sanctuary so check them out atwww.singlevisioninc.org. We really enjoyedour $me there. More riding for some out toCedar Key. Monday came too soon for thetrip home. Traffic caused a highway danceparty and more backroad riding. Lil’ sister,Jeanne’, had her first long ride experienceand let me tell you, we all think she is readyto take her permit test and get her ownbike. Gree$ngs from the Northern Women chapter! Our group met and planned a long rideto Hood River for our July mee$ng. Someof our hardiest riders rode in despite impending rain. We are also con$nuing planning routes and stops on our way toInterna$onals in Denver in August. Routesare s$ll being planned and choosing whichNa$onal Parks to dri( through to and fromColorado. We are ge'ng excited about thistrip!Summer is off to a slow start in Oregon withrain con$nuing into June. Pu'ng awayyour threeseason gear and pulling out thesummer gear o(en brings to mind replac

ing or upda$ng old, worn out gear. Everywoman knows what a nightmare it is to buyblue jeans and gear shopping is no different. Each brand fits differently, some runlarge or small, those needing plus sizes ortall lengths will not have as many choices, and while ordering online offers more sizing it also offers more lack of fit headaches. Not only do the musculoskeletal differences mean that men’s gear does not fit uswell, but also that helmets (yes, even helmets) are shaped for men’s skulls. Onlyabout 6% of helmets on the market areshaped for women’s skulls, made by Schuberth, resul$ng in us trying on what feelslike hundreds before finding one that fits. The lack of available women’s gear onlycompounds fit and safety issues. You reallyhave to shop around to find what you need.

Women are one the fastest growing groupsin the motorcycle industry (approximately25%) and yet men have more than three$mes the choices when it comes to gear.Manufacturers need to catch up and don’thesitate to tell them that when you’reshopping.Word of mouth is the s$ll one of the bestways to find out about gear fi$ng women—these days primarily on the Internet in theform of reviews and feedback posted bywomen. One of the largest lists of gear reviews specifically for women’s gear is onthe Web Bike World site (h%p://www.webbikeworld.com/womenmotorcycleclothing/), so it is a good place to start. Here in Northern BC, we have has a wetand chilly spring. Some of us had our bikeson the road for a while, some only a shortfew weeks. As the sun is out to play, so aremost of us on our beloved motor babies.Pavement beneath us, purring of our motors, and the wind in our faces is the bestform of relaxa$on and stress control. Our ladies have been very busy this springplanning our annual fundraiser, Ride forThe Cause. This year the funds we raisedwere dedicated to our Hospice House, aplace near and dear to many of our hearts.

As I could not a%end, I was very pleased tohear we had more riders register and moremoney raised this year than last. This isgreat as to me it is a sign that the riders inour community have fun at this yearlyevent and by word of mouth we are growing, maybe even known as the fun group, definitely known as the “Pink Ride”. Givingback to our community is a great way for usto adver$se what an amazing group ofladies we have in our group and the amazing things we do, most importantly, havingfun.Speaking of fun, planning is in the works forsome day trips, overnight trips, longer trips, and of course the WITW Canadian Rally! Aswe start to plan, excitement fills the air.

Some of us will stay close to home, andsome of us will travel afar. Any road trip ona motorcycle is a great trip as far as I amconcerned; I think it is safe to say we all feelthe same. Stay safe on the roads out there fellow sisters, and may you have many km of pavement under you this summer. Gree$ngs to all our sisters in the wind!Las Vegas, Lake Havasu Sin Sity Sisters cametogether with the Cactus Cu$es in April tosupport the Healing Hooves disabled ridersprogram, a great cause. I know from personal experience that people with specialneeds benefit greatly from interac$ons withhorses. The poker run helped to make pur

chases that are needed to keep this awesome program running, so we were happy tohelp.Of course, where there is a gathering ofWomen in the Wind chapters, fun and frivolity will follow. We chose to stay in the 1860’s silver miningcamp of Chloride located in the CerbatMountains of Arizona, home to Shep’s Miners Inn for the poker run. Shep’s is an oldadobe Inn originally used for passengers ofthe Bu%erfield Stage Lines to rest theirweary bones a(er their grueling trip thru thedesert. The Inn is s$ll somewhat off the gridwith no tv, patchy cell service, and quirkyrooms, and it’s said that spirits of past visitors remain. Sure, hope they didn’t mind allthe dancing and singing that went on. Supposedly there’s a video of the party that tookplace, and should be entertaining to watch.Keep your eyes peeled for it to be posted toour WITW site. Sol SistersSan Diego CAFeatured Sol Sister Ques$onsWhen was the first $me you ever rode amotorcycle and what was that like? It wasthe end of 2005 and my late husband, Eric, was $red to paying upwards of $5.00 forgas in his truck and decided to return toriding a motorcycle to work. Being slightlyadventuresome, I told him I would like tolearn how to ride and didn’t want to bethe ‘bitch on the back’. I wanted to be thecool wife, so I learned – li%le scary, but exhilara$ng! I was in love! When did you buy your first motorcycle, what did you get and how many bikeshave you owned since? We bought theYamaha 250 from another female riderwho had used it as a starter bike, and Ikept it for about as long as she did – longenough to take the MSF course, and thevery next day, a good friend of ours whorode said, why don’t you try Eric’s bike. Iwas terrified, but felt the peer pressure, and agreed to ride it down the street to anear by park and see how it felt. It wasabout 10 minutes later that I zoomedpassed the house with my fullface helmetup yellowing, “This bike was made forme!” It was the best excuse for Eric to upgrade and me to keep his Kawasaki Zx6e,some refer to them as ZZR 600’s. I just soldmy bike few months ago and it fit like aglove. BUT, I have since inherited my latehusbands BMW 1200C and ge'ng used to

it.How did you first find out about the SolSisters and decide to join? My good friendand interpre$ng colleague Bonnie invitedme to join a few weeks a(er I took thecourse and I’ve been a member ever since. What do you enjoy most about being a SolSister? There are a lot of things that thisgroup of fine women does for many others, and me but a few things stand outabove all. A month before my husbandpassed, he was very ill and had been unable to ride his motorcycle for severalmonths, since the tumor was quite largeand in his abdomen. The Sol Sisters decided to host a parade in our neighborhood, dressing up their bikes, andthemselves in super hero ou"its. We toldall the neighbors and received such greatpraises that kids were going to give ourlemonade and neighbors were going to setup chairs and wave on all the women… Itwas going to be the best parade ever! Unfortunately, he was taken to Emergencythe day before, then admi%ed to the hospital that night, the evening before the parade and passed a few weeks later. For hisfuneral, the women provided an escort forthe hearse, some of the women I hadnever met, but have become quite closeto since. I could name more things I enjoy, but it was during that $me, that I’m forever grateful and touched.Do you have a nickname with the Sol Sisters and if so, how did you earn it? I havea nickname, Sunday Girl, but Sol Sistersdidn’t give me that name. My bike how

ever, got her name from a fellow member. My Zx6e was “Daisy”, as in “oopsadaisy”.She was named a(er I dropped her twicein my driveway, which had a steep incline.I do not have a name for the BMW yet. What is something you’d love the WITWorganiza$on to know about you— perhapssomething many of us don’t know aboutyou? I’m an open book with folks, so I amnot sure what people don’t know aboutme. I’ve been a professional sign languageinterpreter for almost 30 years, and go towork every day in apprecia$on for havinga wonderful career with amazing peoplewho challenge me daily. When I’m not onmy bike on the weekends, which seemslike I’m hardly riding anymore, it’s becauseI’m seeking more balance in my life, camping with my girlfriend Sharon, and friends,in our new Retro style 2015 Winnebago. And, I’ve been compe$$vely bowling sinceI was thirteen and finally shot my first 300game December 2015.

Southeast MichiganDundee, MI

Let’s Ride! The weather finally broke herein Southeastern Michigan and us WITWgirls couldn’t be more excited.

Before I begin, let me introduce myself, myname is Gypsy, I am the newest officer ofthe Southeastern Michigan chapter. I wasappointed secretary when Trigger, our former secretary was appointed Vice President. We also added a new road captain,Lil Bit. We have a great team of officerswho look forward to some amazing rides

with all of our wind sisters. We also welcomed our newest member, Karma to ourgrowing group of ladies.

What have we been up to? Whenever theweather reached temperatures close to60, some of us are always willing to ride.We have a%ended a few of the local bikenights and also made it to ride a few $mesfor ice cream and dinner. Some$mes inthat order. A(er our April monthly meeting the sun was shining and we headed upto Elizabeth Park where our picture wastaken along the waterfront. We a%endeda Blessing of the Bikes at Tori’s church. Some of us weren’t as brave as others andhad to cage it since the temperatures werebarely reaching 45 degrees. The Churchprovided us with donuts and coffee a(erthe blessing. We all walked away withsuch a happy heart.

One of our sisters, Kood, was fortunateenough to be able to a%end Daytona BikeWeek and our President, Dyna is headingback from a rainy trip to Louisiana. Our

Treasurer, Rapunzel in prepara$on to openher new restaurant, Dickies BBQ, waslucky enough to be able to ride around inTexas while not in training. Our Sergeantof Arms, Knee High, was married in earlyMay and we all got together to wish herwell on her marriage.

At the beginning of May we had our firstmandatory UP Day. Our road captains, LilBit and Tinker, checked everyone to makesure that we all had the proper endorsements and insurance, they checked ourbikes for proper $re pressure, tread, lightsand turn signals. A(er the bikes checkedout, some of the girls headed up to a localshoo$ng range to try out their shoo$ngskills.

Lil Bit has put together a calendar ofevents that just keeps growing. For thosewho can’t make it to one event, no worries, there is always another one the nextweekend.

With Summer Interna$onals being held inGolden CO this year (and Pike’s Peak calling to challenge many of us) we felt addressing Al$tude Sickness and otherdangerous riding condi$ons for our JuneSafety Project would be appropriate. We’ve pushed the $me frame for the AMSsegment so it could make the deadline forthis issue of STB.

Stay tuned to the Safety page of our website for segments on Heat Exhaus$on, Hypothermia, and Fa$gue.www.witwvsc.weebly.com/safety.html

When to STOP & Call It A Day!

Al"tude Sickness (aka AMS, Acute Mountain Sickness):

AMS is believed to be caused by brainswelling due to the lower barometric pressure at high al$tude. Though it is rarebelow 8000 feet, it can occur with anyrapid ascent of several thousand feet.

It is diagnosed at high eleva$ons by thepresence of a headache and any one ormore of the following; dizziness or feeling“lightheaded”, loss of appe$te or nauseous, weak and $red, difficulty sleeping.Assume it is AMS un$l proven otherwise.

Never con$nue to ascend with symptomsof AMS, it can rapidly progress to High Al$tude Cerebral Edema (HACE) or High Al$tude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), either ofwhich can be fatal in a ma%er of hours todays!

HACE produces confusion and loss of coordina$on and may not be recognized bythe person suffering from it. HAPE occursmost o(en in young, fit people, frequentlypresen$ng on the second night at al$tude.Shortness of breath, wheezing (or otherlung “crackling” sounds), and bluegreylips and fingernails are symptoma$c.

If AMS is ge'ng worse, or symptoms ofHACE or HAPE are present, go back downto the last eleva$on that was free of symptoms, typically 1500 – 3000 feet lowerthan where sickness began. Acetazolamide (a sulfa drug) may be given astreatment while symptoms persist.

The best defense is preven$on. Whenpossible, spend a night at each increase of3000 feet in eleva$on. This gives the body$me to acclimate to the pressure changes.Be sure to hydrate! Increased urina$on isnormal at al$tude as heme concentra$onoccurs. NSAIDS can help avoid mild AMSdue to their an$inflammatory proper$es.

For more detailed informa$on, visit the Interna$onal Society for Mountain Medicineat www.ismm.org or download the LakeLouise AMS Diagnos$c worksheet atwww.ismm.org/tl_files/infocenter/AMS_Worksheet.pdf.

SunShine SistersBoynton Beach FLThe SunShine Sisters in South Florida hopeeveryone is having a great summer andge'ng in lots of miles for the riding season! We’ve enjoyed our two wheel $mewith many ou$ngs and adventures and gotto spend lots of $me with an assortmentof WITW sisters!

A back road adventure took a group ofmotorcycles to the hidden treasure ofSolomon’s Castle. The castle is the home, gallery and workshop of interna$onallyrenowned ar$st Howard Solomon. Theone of a kind works of art include metalwork, wood carving, stone cu'ng andstained glass throughout the building andgardens. Lunch at the boat in a moatrestaurant capped off the adventure. Wewere able to share a deligh"ul a(ernoonwith our sisters from the Island BreezeChapter.

A coastal breeze that brought the tang ofsalt while viewing the ocean described theday’s journey that took us in and out of thebarrier islands along the coast of Floridaas we made our way to the Twisted Tuna.

As the name evokes, it is an eclec$cseafood joint right on the marina withlocal fish and daily entertainment. We enjoyed the eats and conversa$on with oursisters from Space Coast Riders and Livingin the Wind Chapters.

A lively ride under the scorching sunbrought us to a funky li%le eatery on thewater. Camellia Street Grill grows theirown vegetables and serves locally caughtseafood in the heart of the glades. Wecooled off with a wild air boat ride throughthe Everglades that brought misty watersand stunning scenery, although only onelonely li%le alligator. We were able toshare this exclusive Florida ou$ng with oursisters from the Long Island and Black RoseChapters. We indoctrinated Jill “Jilly Bean”Hardy Hobbs as our newest, and firsttrike, riding chapter member.

As fun as it was to welcome a new member, we had an equally sad $me sayinggoodbye to our oldest chapter member.Kay “Mags” Culbertson passed away a(era brief ba%le with illness. Kay holds thehonor of being the first SunShine Sistersmember. She is riding on angel wings now,but we gave her a great farewell as wegunned our pipes in a loud and emo$onal

While we’re not looking forward to theheat and hurricane season, we are lookingforward to the pool par$es and twilightjaunts that summer will bring. Everdina“Dutch” Vi$ello and Connie “Casper” Peterson have already completed their 1K,2Day, My Way challenge and are buildingup their stamina, the rest of the SunShineSisters are working on our endurance forthe summer excursion to Denver.
