Alaskan King Crab - 225 pounds of it - was flown in for our Grange’s very successful fundraiser held at the Cle Elum Eagles Club on February 26 . A sell out crowd of 150 happy diners feasted on crab, a crisp green salad, crusty French garlic bread and red velvet and carrot cake. Grangers Donna & Gerald Carollo and Rick & Julie
Hermanson came up with the idea of a dinner featuring King Crab because of the couple’s connections to Alaska. Rick and Julie donated more than half the crab, as well as an auction item featuring a trip for two to Rick’s family fishing cabin on Prince of Wales Island that had auctioneer Larry Marty in the midst of a bidding war! Grange members and friends pitched in to secure auction items and to help with all aspects of the event, which exceeded planners’ expectations. We will be able to do some maintenance projects and perhaps complete an item or two on our “wish list,” as well as to have funds in reserve for emergencies that can crop up unexpectedly. THANK YOU TO ALL INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES WHO MADE THIS EVENT SUCH A HUGE SUCCESS!
A crowd of over 100 filled the Grange hall on January 29th, the date of the 2011 Grange Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner. Ticket holders came to enjoy a delicious meal, hear the incredible singer Jeanne Coady, and most of all, to contribute to the 2011 Grange Scholarship Fund. This year, the menu included the traditional spaghetti and meatballs, Caesar salad, garlic bread and new this year, a Ginger Mascarpone Ice Box Cake.
Amber Strand, one of the 2010 scholarship recipients, spoke about how helpful her award had been in the purchase of textbooks as she pursues her degree at CWU. Previous birthday plans prevented Molly Jo Ballard, also a 2010 scholarship recipient, from attending the dinner. Molly Jo reported that the money she received was a great help with her classes at Bellevue Community College.
Singer Jeanne Coady wowed the audience by singing Patsy Cline tunes from the late 50s and early 60s. Jeanne grew up in the Teanaway area
and went to college at CWU. Now an educator in the Yakima School District, this talented vocalist was pleased to be part of our fundraising efforts so that another young person from Kittitas County will re-ceive financial assistance in his or her quest for higher education.
Applications for our $1,000 2011 Scholarship were distributed to the high schools in Kittitas County in mid January. Candidates will be considered based on an agricultural background, participation in agricul-tural activities or plans to pursue a career in an ag-related field; a family history of Grange membership; community and school involvement; and grade point average . Committee chair, Sally Gililand, will ac-cept applications through April 1 and the committee will have a recommendation to the Grange by the April 8 business meeting. Thank you to all who serve on the Scholarship committee and to Barb Hamel and Mary Bergstrom, who headed up the Scholarship Dinner committee, as well as all who helped to make the evening such a success! THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

No one was more surprised than I was on finding I had won this year’s
Chili Cook Off! Last year, my chili didn’t receive one single vote, which
motivated me to seek some tips from my son, Adam, who is a wonderful
cook. His suggestions did the trick, and my Yellow Rock Chili came in
first! On stage with me are 2nd place Mike Tappero on the left and
3rd place Steve Bloomer on the right.
April is National Grange Month. This year’s theme is “Connecting
Communities Through Service.” To quote National Grange President,
Ed Luttrell, “I cannot think of a theme that reflects our organization
more. The Grange has 144 years of experience in serving American communities through legislative ef-
forts, education, and service projects. Grange Month is a wonderful time to share the opportunities that
the Grange gives people and communities to come together and accomplish great things.” We can be
proud of the part the Grange played in bringing I872 to the ballot, thus making the “Top Two” Primary a
reality in Washington State; the work our members do in our local communities by volunteering at the
Senior Center, Relay for Life, the Community Christmas Basket or by being a SHIBA volunteer helping
seniors make decisions on their Part D Medicare choices; and the relationship our Grange has with
groups like the Boy Scouts and Hunter Safety Classes, where we provide meeting space at no cost.
Community really defines our Grange - something to remember when you’re asked why you’re a
Granger and when you encourage others to join our organization!

Members of the Grange Auxiliary provide strong leadership and support for our Grange activities. You
will see us in the forefront of all activities-the auction and king crab dinner, chili feed, spaghetti dinner,
mini fair, etc. We do spring cleaning more than just in the spring so the Grange looks spic-and-span for
those who rent it and for all of our own functions.
Our group meets on the first Friday of each month at 12 noon in the comfortable environment of a
member's home. We bring our own sack lunches, and the host provides a yummy dessert. Some of our
group serve on the Grange Scholarship Committee and have partnered with all the Kittitas County high
schools to promote our $1,000 Grange Scholarship for a senior upon graduation. We recently purchased
our own professional-looking aprons with "Swauk Teanaway" and the Grange logo on the front in blue
and gold threads. All Grange women are welcome to join us at our monthly meetings. Give Sally Gililand
a call at 206.854.2936 if you have questions or email her at [email protected].

2011 Washington State Grange Convention in Moses Lake June 29 - July 2
The two delegates we are sending to the 122nd Annual Washington State Grange Convention in
Moses Lake this year are President Claire Lucke and Kurt Lucke. Our Grange will be responsible for
being in charge of a Youth Event, which will be a guided tour of the Wild Horse Wind Farm near Vantage
the morning of Thursday, June 30. We need a couple of volunteers to assist with this tour and sack
lunch at the Wild Horse, please call Claire 509-857-2580 if you are able to help. And because the Grant
County Fairgrounds, site of the convention activities, is relatively close, you may want to come by to at-
tend some of the events, view the Art & Craft Contests, see what a State Grange Convention is all about,
or receive your 6th Degree (State Level). Let me know if you plan on attending. Lodging and meal in-
formation can be found in the April 2011 issue of the Grange News or their website: www.wa-grange.org.
The Swauk Teanaway Grange lost three dear members during the first quarter of 2011.
Judith Rombauer-Rooks was born on June 25, 1937 and passed away February 26, 2011. Judy lived in South Cle Elum and is survived by the love of her life, her husband, Robert Glenn
Rooks, and three of her four children, as well as eight grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling,
fishing, picking berries, hunting, dancing and spending time with good friends. She had a
great sense of humor. Judy and Bob always had a booth at our Christmas
Bazaar featuring homemade products from their B&J Touch of Nature
Huckleberry Company. We will miss you, Judy.
Daryle “Starky” Starkovich, known widely and fondly as Starky, passed away peacefully at his home on March 2, 2011. Born on June 12,
1938, in Ronald to Thomas and Mary (Mollo) Starkovich, he went on to
graduate with a B.A. in education from Central Washington University.
Prior to embarking on a career in education that lasted more than 30 years, Daryle held
various jobs in the mountains and forests he loved so well. He is survived by his sons, Anthony
of North Bend, and Michael (wife Amy) of Cle Elum, grandsons Trygve and Scout, a niece and
nephew and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, his sister Rose,
and his brother Darwin. Starky joined our Grange in 1974 and was honored last year for his 36
years of membership; he was a Lifetime Member. He was a man well loved and he touched
many lives, as was evidenced by the over-capacity crowd at his memorial service March 11 at
the Senior Center in Cle Elum.
Jeanne Elizabeth (Keyes) Giersch, 91, of Ellensburg passed away peacefully on March 22, 2011. Jeanne was born on July 28, 1919 in Spokane, WA. She was the ninth of
ten children. Jeanne married “Dutch” Giersch on October 10, 1939, in Marysville, WA,
and together they spent over 71 years together. Jeanne was an avid hunter in her
younger days, she enjoyed nature and its beauty, and had a lovely rose garden and
large vegetable garden. She is survived by her loving husband “Dutch,” several nieces
and nephews and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her
four brothers and five sisters. Jeanne was honored last year for her 60 years of Grange
membership and received the Golden Sheaf Certificate from the National Grange. State
Grange Master June Hendrickson and her husband Jack made a personal visit to the
Giersch’s home in Ellensburg to bestow this very special honor. Jeanne was a very
caring person who helped many during her lifetime, she treasured her friends and
family. Our hearts go out to “Dutch” at this difficult time.
There were some mighty good chilis at March 19th CHILI COOK
OFF & COWBOY CONCERT. Winners were: 1st prize, Claire Lucke, 2nd prize, Mike Tappero, 3rd prize, Steve Bloomer. Thanks to all who
entered their chili, as well as all the folks who provided the good tast-
ing cornbread, salads and desserts. The audience sure enjoyed cow-
boy singer Hank Cramer and cowboy poet Paul Steuermann, as well as
their friend, Lonnie Shurtleff, from Pendleton, OR, who joined the guys
on stage.
