OPEN HOUSE

Shawnee Downtown Partnership

Stag’s Creek, 10820 Shawnee Mission Parkway

Crank up the accordions and head on over to the 16th annual Oktoberfest. Hosted by the Shawnee German-American Club, this year’s celebration is set for Friday, September 28 at the Shawnee Civic Centre (located at 13817 Johnson Drive) from 5:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Admission is FREE for the whole family. This fun and festive event will feature authentic German food and beverages, along with live music from Betty Jo Simon and the Alpen Speilers, a Bavarian polka band that has been performing in and around the Kansas City area for many years. Later, be sure to stay and see performances of traditional German folk dancing from Blautaler Schuhplatter of Kansas City, an authentic Bavarian dance troupe! Also, don’t miss your chance to step outside (to the biergarten) for music and dancing with Honky-Tonk Trio, who will be performing country-western, oldies, and contemporary hits! Children will be able to enjoy a variety of activities and games, presented by the Shawnee Town Museum, while in the Kinderhall! German or not, this event is wunderbar!

Bring the whole family out to Fire Headquarters at 6501 Quivira on Saturday, September 15 for a morning of fun! From 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., kids can climb up in fire trucks, spray a fire hose, get an inside look at police vehicles and so much more. We’ll have face-painting for the little ones and fun giveaways. Plan to grab a bite to eat as we’ll be grilling up goodies and scooping up snacks. All of our City Departments will be there to get you updated on the latest City projects and to answer any questions you might have about Nieman Now, the Community Center Feasibility Study, the new Fire Station being built or anything else! You can also learn more about how you can make a big impact in your community by volunteering for the City! Keep an eye on the City’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor and cityofshawnee.org for new details about our Open House. We look forward to seeing you and showing you how the City is working for you!

City Open House

Get ready to protect your identity, prescriptions and the planet! Join us Saturday, October 20 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Splash Cove parking lot (5800 King Street) for the City’s 7th annual Fall Shredding Event. Held in conjunction with “America Recycles Day”, PROSHRED will be helping you to safely dispose of your confidential documents. All shredded documents are then recycled. The service is free but there is a recommended donation of $5 for a regular file box and $10 for a large file box, which helps offset the cost of shredding. Any remaining donations will benefit the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. The Police Department will also be on hand to ensure the safe disposal of any unused prescription drugs. The Shawnee Lions Club will be collecting eyeglasses to support the Lions Recycle for Sight initiative that provides eyeglasses to those in need. Anyone coming to the event should enter the parking lot at 57th Terrace and King where drivers will be directed to the appropriate line.

Nieman Road is Open for Business! All businesses along Nieman Road are still open and ready for your business! The City understands the disruption to downtown businesses due to the construction. We want to help support your businesses throughout the progress. Please contact Lauren Grashoff, Neighborhood Planner, at 742-6226 or Dave Holtwick, Business Liaison, at 742-6214 with your concerns or ideas about how we can help.

The Nieman Now! projects are moving along and we thank everyone for their patience throughout the construction. Please note that throughout the projects the speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph on Nieman Road to make sure all of the workers stay safe while on the job. Below are updates on each of the improvement projects:

• Nieman Middle Stormwater Project - The majority of the work has been completed, with only a few change order items to be finished.

• Nieman North Stormwater Project - The installation of block channel walls, a new stormwater channel, box culverts, adjacent trail, and utility relocation work was completed over the summer. The project is currently on hold until the Flint Street project passes the new channel to complete the project tie-in. It is expected to be wrapped up by October.

• Flint Street Improvements - Most of the utility relocation work has been completed for this project, as well as grading completed for the roadway on the north end of the project. Pavement work has started with the project progressing from north to south. The expected completion date is November 1.

• Nieman Road - Kansas City Power and Light mobilized their subcontractor crews (Black and McDonald) at the beginning of August to complete the relocation of overhead utilities to underground. Contractors are currently using the City owned lot just south of Old Shawnee Pizza for staging. WaterOne, AT&T, and gas relocation work is ongoing. The Nieman Road project opened for bids on August 15. Amino Brothers was the low bidder. City Council contract approval is pending. The project completion timeline has been pushed to July 2019.
