MARCH 2, 2015 Refreshments for our meetings are provided by our members, not the society. Every member is asked to provide food or drink at least once per year. A notice of when it is a member’s turn to do so, is in each newsletter. If you cannot attend that meeting, we ask you to contact me, at least one week prior to the meeting, so I can reassign you to a different month. Please let us know if you are a seasonal resident.

We are asking those members listed below to please take their turn to help with refreshments for this month’s meeting. It involves bringing in light refreshments and/or beverages, assist with setting up the buffet table and share in the clean-up process after the meeting. Doors open at 6:00 pm and all set-up, with food and beverages, ready for our members by 6:45 pm, before the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Our Guest Speaker - March 2, 2015 PETER T. LIN Diamond Orchids in Southern California

Peter started growing orchids over 30 years ago, but then stopped due to school and starting a career. It wasn’t until about 11 years ago that the orchid “bug” came back and he is now heavily involved once again! He is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society, and a hybridizer of mini-catts. He enjoys meeting with other orchid enthusiasts, and can often be found at various orchid shows and societies around the country.

Due to limited growing space, Peter likes to specialize in miniature orchids, both species and hybrids, and has received numerous AOS awards. His interests in orchids include Dendrobiums, Angraecoids, and Neofinetias. He is also known as “Mr. Sophronitis” as he has a passion for growing and collecting them. He maintains a collection of a thousand or more orchids at his home in Southern California in 3 small greenhouses, outdoors, as well as an offsite greenhouse.  Peter will be bringing some of his plants for sale from Diamond Orchids,

However, he has a larger collection of plants for sale on his website.  He offers orchid societies a 10% discount.  Since he is coming next month, if you find something that you like there will be no shipping and handling charges. However, you must order your plants from Peter's website on or before Feb 26, 2015.

Here are two links to check out Peter's plants for sale .....• Link to pictures of some of his plants ...  Highlights from his Catalog • Link to his catalog ....  Catalog

Here is a link to the actual Diamond Orchids Catalog.pdf.  It's very similar to the Catalog link above, but an alternative way to see Peter's Orchid list that is for for sale ..... Please remember to get in any special orders on Peter's Website on or before Feb 26, 2015.

ORCHID RELATED BOOKS For Sale at the Membership Table during the March meeting.

Donated by KEN FEHLING, January 29, 2015

Ken Fehling, a Life member of our Society, has donated a number of orchid books to us. Ken & his late wife, Gladys were long time members of the Sarasota Orchid Society. They joined in approximately 1985, and were very active members. Ken served as President of the Society, gave many demonstrations on how to build a greenhouse and they both worked at putting in many exhibits at various Orchid Shows throughout their active years. Before moving to a home in South Gate in 1984, Ken & Gladys lived on Andros Island in the Bahamas where they raised their daughter & 3 sons. Gladys spent much of her time searching for the orchids of the area and growing them for her own pleasure. She discovered a new species of Encyclia, which was named after her, Encyclia fehlingii.

ORCHIDS WE SHOULD ALL GROW

C. trianaeiby Roy Krueger

The grand old man of Cattleyas, Arthur Chadwick, once said, ”Despite what you read in the newspapers, Columbia is famous first as the home of C. trianaei and only second as the home of the cocaine cartel.” As we speak today, the cartels are under control or a thing of the past, and Columbia has again become an orchid hunters Mecca. There are nurseries, shows, and of course the National Flower, C. trianaei.

First discovered outside Fusagasuga, Columbia in 1842 by Belgian botanist Jean Linden, it is named after Jose Triana, a Columbian botanist who was working for Linden and sent a large shipment back to Europe where they were sold for the then outrageous price of 150 francs.

Among its many virtues, C. trianaei is a late winter bloomer, bringing color and the hope of spring to the otherwise dreary days that plague those poor hobbyists who do not reside in sunny Florida.

C. trianaei possesses perhaps the purist form of all the large Cattleya species. Large flat flowers with full rounded petals and a distinct multicolored lip are the features of C. trianaei. Petals can reach a full 4” wide and sepals can reach a width of 1 ½’.

It is found in many color forms ranging from a true alba to dark lavender with many shades of pink and even a few coerulescens forms. There are flares in some clones and a few with feathering along the veins of the petals. The only color form that is rare is a fine form of semi alba. The one pictured, a semi alba with a fine white picotee, was in bloom over four weeks when this picture was taken.

C. trianaei also passes its fine form on to its many hybrids. It is one of the most prolific breeding species in the Cattleya family with over 525 primary hybrids and over 20,000 progeny.

After flowering, it will put up new growth in early spring. When the new growth matures in early summer, a second growth will follow rapidly if you do not let the plant go dry. After both mature in fall, rest the plant with reduced water and fertilizer and both growths will blossom in early to mid winter. C. trianaei typically puts out only two or three blooms per stem, but with two blooming leads, rewards the diligent grower with a mass of color that will last for up to six weeks, the longest lasting of any of the classic large Cattleyas.

It is an easy plant to grow, not particularly susceptible to rot or disease. For the best flowers, avoid repotting for as long as possible and repot only after new roots emerge from the lead. Like all large Cattleyas, C. trianaei needs bright light and good air movement. Light green leaves indicate adequate light. Take care not to let the leaves get hot to the touch, or they will burn. Remember as with any large flowering Cattleya, for best results, you must water and feed it. It grows well in a pot or basket with coarse well drained mix.

Sarasota Orchid Society, Inc. SOS meets on the first Monday

of each month at Selby Gardens. The SOS, an affiliate of the American Orchid Society, is a non-profit association with the aims of promoting the development, improvement and preservation of orchids through the dissemination of information concerning the culture, hybridization or development of orchids, and generally to extend the knowledge of orchids.

Our membership dues, at $20. for individuals and $25. for families, are a great value. These dues help us acquire quality speakers for our monthly meetings and pay for special events such as picnics and repotting demonstrations. Our fund raisers, Orchid Auction, Orchid Show and Raffles raise additional funds to educate the general public about orchids and their conserva-tion, provide scholarships to local students who will study horticulture, and support orchid research programs.

“Orchid View” our Orchid Society newsletter, is published monthly by the Sarasota Orchid Society. It is included via e-mail at no charge for members.

Deadline for articles, photos and information for the newsletter is the 15th of the previous month.

Contributors to “Orchid View” give reprint rights to their work to newsletters and other affiliates of the American Orchid Society.
