WHAT IS SOLAR SYSTEM?

The solar system consists of the sun and other astronomical objects bound to it gravity, all of which formed from the collapse of a giant molecular cloud approximately 4.6 billion years ago. The astronomical objects are surrounding the sun.

WHAT THINGS ARE THERE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM?

There are many things include the sun, planets and others.

The planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

The others are like: Satellite, meteoroids, meteors, meteorites, comets, asteroids.

PLANETS AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

Planets is like sky objects that doesn’t have any own light. Planets only reflect star’s light for example the lights of the sun. Planets only move for surrounding the sun. This This process is called a rotation. A few years ago we know that planets are nine. But then the astronomy and astronouts agree that ‘Pluto’ is not a planets anymore because Pluto is located in the asteroid belts. Planets are surrounding

the sun and make a year, this proccess is called ‘revolution’ and when planets turning that make a day is called rotation.

SUN Sun is the center of the solar system. Diameter

approximately about 1.392.500 km. The sun composed by 70% hydrogen gas, 25% helium gas and 5% of others. Distance of the sun with the earth approximately about 150 million km. Outside temperature of the sun approximately about 6000 degrees celsius.

Parts of sun are:- Photosphere- Chromosphere- Prominensa- Corona- Sunspots

MERCURY

Mercury is the nearest planet to the sun. ‘Colaris’ is the biggest crater on this planet. This planet is also called like ‘morning star’ or ‘night star’. Mercury is called the ‘morning star’ because people can see this planet before dawn. Mercury’s orbit is 88 days. Distance of the sun with this planet approximately about 58 million km. This is the only planet that doesn’t have any satellite.

VENUS

Venus is the nearest planet to the earth. This planet also called like ‘morning star’, ‘dawn star’, and ‘white planet’. Distance of the sun with Venus approximately about108 million km. Venus orbit is 222 km. The rotation is 243 days. The temperature can be 5000 degrees celcius.

EARTH

Earth is only the planet that can be occupied by all of living things. Distanece of the sun with earth approximately about 150 million km. The revolution of this planet about 365,25 days/1 year and the rotation is 24 hours/ 1 day. Earth only have 1 satellite and that is moon.

MARS

Mars also called like ‘red planet’ because this planet’s colour is red. The revolution is 687 days and the rotation is 24,6 hours. The high temperature on the surface about 50 degrees – 60 degrees celcius. This planet have two satellite and that are Fobos and Deimos. The distance of this planet with the sun is 1,52 SA.

JUPITER

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the solar system. The rotation of Jupiter is 50 hours. The distance of Jupiter with the sun is 778 million km and Jupiter also have 17 satellite. This planet also called like gas planet.

SATURN

Saturn is the second biggest planet and have 22 satellite. This planet is the only planet that have the most planet in solar system. Also this planet have the most easiest characteristic that people can easy remember because Saturn is one of the planets that have a ring. The distance of this planet with the sun is 1.433,5 million km (9,5 SA). The revolution of this planet is 29,5 years and the rotation is 10,7 hours.

URANUS

The rotation of this planet is 17,2 hours and the revolution is 84 years. Uranus have 15 satellite and the size is 50 times more bigger than earth.

NEPTUNE

This planet also called ‘twin planet’. This planet have 2 satellite and that are Triton and Neroid. The revolution is 164,8 years and the rotation is 16,1 hours.

SATELLITE

Satellite is an object that accompany the planets when the planets surrounding the sun. Satellite is classified into two parts:

- Natural satellite, this is satellite that already there in the solar system withour any humans make it. For example: moon (the natural satellite of the earth).

- Human made Satellite: this satellite is the satellite that made by human and launched using a rocket with a specific purpose. For example: Palapa (the human made satellite from Indonesia).

METEOROIDS

Meteoroid are objects from the outerspace with a small size that hovering in the space. Meteoroid also called like ‘shooting star’!

Page 18: S OLAR S YSTEM BY: scikids.wordpress.com ©2011. W HAT IS S OLAR S YSTEM ? The solar system consists of the sun and other astronomical objects bound to

METEOR

Meteor are objects that falling down to the earth but it already burn by the earth’s atmosphere. Meteor also is the parts from meteoroid but the meteoroid is to nearly to the earth and make the gravity of the earth pull the meteoroid.

Page 19: S OLAR S YSTEM BY: scikids.wordpress.com ©2011. W HAT IS S OLAR S YSTEM ? The solar system consists of the sun and other astronomical objects bound to

METEORITES

Meteorites are same like meteor, meteorites are parts from meteoroids. But the different with meteor, that meteorites falling down to the earth but can going through the earth’s atmosphere until to the earth’s surface.

COMETS

Comet is incandescent ball and having light tails so often called ‘star tails’. Comets appear in the solar system and can be seen on an unspecified period. The popular comets is ‘Halley Comet’. This comet only appear once in 76 years.

ASTEROIDS

Asteroids or planetoids is objects fragments that form a small star or often referred to as minor planets. For example: Pallas, Juno, and Vesta.

ANSWER IT IN YOUR BOOK

Write down parts of the sun! Write down all of the gas that compile the

sun! What is a star light? What is meteorid? What object that accompany a planet? Planet that have the most satellite is... What star is the nearest to the earth? What comet that very popular? Mercury need how many days to surrounding

the sun? Where is the center of the solar system?
