National Tree Day
A massive THANK YOU to Mr and Mrs Robertson and Bill Robertson Toyota for an amazing National Tree Day last Friday. Selected student representatives from each class, Mr Cubis and Mrs Melville accompanied Mr and Mrs Robertson in planting 2 trees near the long jump pits and numerous shrubs along the fence line. Our students certainly looked the part with their gardening gloves and tools as they dug holes, planted shrubs, then fertilised and watered the plants - all under the guidance of our awesome grounds staff, Mr Cubis and Mrs Melville. We even had help from Celia the Toyota Dolphin, who came to lend a hand.
"It was so much fun and we are caring for the environment" Kaiden 4B
"I felt like a real gardener while I was wearing my gardening gloves" Cameron 4C
"I can't wait to see the plants grow while I go through all the grades at school" Quin 2C
"Gardening certainly is hard work!" Finlae 6C

Writing Writing in Prep Year
Prep is now the first compulsory formal year of schooling and many of the foundation skills for the rest of a child’s learning take place. In Prep, we focus on students using the correct pencil grip, forming letters correctly, writing sentences using sight words, leaving spaces between words and using basic sentence punctuation.
This term the students are learning about rhyming words and using our knowledge of rhyme to spell.
Each term the teachers develop writing goals. These goals provide the teachers and the students with two specific areas to work on for the term. The goals are written in three levels and students are allocated their goals depending on their specific needs.
The first focus area for this term is about writing accurate sentences. The three levels are:
I can write a sentence that others can read.
I can write a simple sentence, using at least one sight word correctly spelt.
I can write simple sentences with some words spelt correctly.
The second focus area for this term is skill-based to ensure their writing conveys a message. The three levels are:
I use sight words and other special words to write.
I join ideas in a sentence using and, or, but (and other conjunctions).
I read my writing aloud to check that it makes sense.
Each of these goals has its own goal card (see example below). The goal card has the goal and then some areas for feedback. The feedback areas are a check for the students to remind them what they would need to do to achieve that goal. These goal cards are attached to the students’ writing. The goal card allows the teacher to provide specific feedback to the student about their progress toward their goal.
Below are some examples of Prep students’ writing that demonstrates the use of the goal cards.
Goal 1: I can write a simple sentence, using at least one sight word correctly spelt.
Feedback:
I used the word wall for writing.
Highlight the capital letter at the start of your sentence.
Highlight the full stop at the end of your sentence.

Premiers Reading Challenge
G.W.S.S is delighted to be part of the 2017 Premiers Reading Challenge which commenced Monday 15th May and closes on Friday 25th August. All students have received a school reader record sheet form so they can participate.
Reading plays an important part in students’ lives during their school years and beyond. It allows children to actively engage their imagination and opens up a world of educational opportunities.
This year the Premier has challenged all state and non-state school students from Prep to Year 2 to read or experience 20 books, Years 3 and 4 to read 20 books and Years 5 to 9 to read 15 books. Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2017 challenge is to engage more students then ever before.
Wednesdays - Home work group runs 3:15-4:15
For parents who are interested in sending their children please send students to the Yallarm Room to pick up necessary paper work and return to school ASAP, students are responsible for bringing necessary homework to the session. Parents are welcome to come and assist at these sessions.
All consent forms must be signed before attending home work group, afternoon tea will be provided.
Please contact Jade Pengelly for clarification or further information.

Early Departure—From time to time, parents/caregivers may need to collect their students from school prior to the formal end of the school day. Students must be collected from the Admin office area. Students must be signed out by a parent/caregiver, or by a responsible adult nominated by the parent/caregiver. Students cannot sign themselves out of the school.
Arrival/Departure Breakfast Club Uniform Policy
Breakfast Club continues again in 2017 at the SEP on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Parents
please note that the start time for Breakfast Club is
now 8.00am. Parents please inform the SEP if your child has any food
allergies.
Thank you to Woolworths Kin Kora for supporting our Breakfast Club each
week by donating the groceries.
As the weather is starting to get a bit cooler here in Gladstone, we are noticing more students wearing clothes that are not part of our school uniform policy.
Parents please note there is to be NO hoodies or jumpers and track pants still need to be of royal blue colour. School jumpers can be purchased from our Uniform shop.
School Safety Medication Volunteers
Attention Parents
Parents are not to be driving into the school via the Quoin Street entrance or the Boles Street entrance to drop off or pick up students.
This is reserved only for Students with Disabilities who have arrangements already put in place or sometimes students with a major injury requiring drop off which has been approved by the Principal.
No other vehicles are to drive into the school as student safety is compromised.
Thank you.
Parents/caregivers are reminded that all medication given to students at school must be prescribed by a doctor, a medication form must be completed and medication stored at reception where it will be administered to students. Parents are asked to ensure a CURRENT green medical authorisation form is completed.
EPIPENS
Please make sure you have replaced any Epipens that may be out of date. These are stored at the office (unless alternative arrangements have been made). A new green form must also be completed for 2017, at the office. Please update any action plans and contact details at the office if needed.
Any parents wanting to volunteer in their child/ren’s classroom or Tuckshop must come down to the office and fill in a new Volunteers form for the 2017 Year. All Volunteers must sign in at the office and collect a lanyard to be worn while in the school grounds.
Update of Details
We have noticed quite a large amount of phone numbers that we cannot make contact with as the phone number has been disconnected. Please make sure that all contact numbers including emergency contacts are up to date. Not only is this a duty of care for us if something happens to your child, but also we have
no alternative than ring the police.
