3AU Men’s Track and Field
The 2006 AU men’s track and field team has highexpectations and will use the accomplishments of last seasonas a springboard to the upcoming season. The track programat AU is only in its third season, but Coach James Kluckhohnexpects big things out of his athletes this year. Coming off theoutdoor NIIC/LMC Invitational victory, the first team meetvictory in the program’s history, the Spartan men have theconfidence needed to meet their expectations.
The main goal for Coach Kluckhohn and his team is tocompete at a regional level in the spring. Some of the athleteswho were young and inexperienced last year should now beable to compete on a regional and national level. The 4X400mrelay team should be one of the standout events for the team, along with sophomore distance runner David Mathew(Aurora, IL/Aurora Central Catholic). Another standoutathlete who looks to take the Spartans to the next level issophomore jumper John Oakley (Lombard, IL/Glenbard EastHS). Oakley is the indoor high jump record holder with ajump of 1.92m.
While winning the NIIC meet and conference championshipis one of the top priorities for the Spartans, competingregionally in individual events also is at the top of the list.Sophomore hurdler/sprinter Travis Quigley (Wilmington,IL/Wilmington HS) has the ability to do just that. His successlast year in the 400m hurdles, when he set the current schoolrecord in the event, should benefit him in his quest to competeat the highest level this season. With a combination ofexperience and a talented incoming freshmen class, AU will getsome well-deserved respect.
The AU men are trying to make a name for themselves inthe track and field community, and continuing to recruittalented athletes is a key to continuing success of theprogram. The Spartans are certainly not short on young
talent this year. There are several freshmen who look tomake a huge impact on the upcoming season. FreshmanLarry Harris (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young HS) looks to takeover some of the responsibility of the outdoor 100m dashand the indoor 55m dash. Freshman Craig Mariano(Schaumburg, IL/Schaumburg HS) will make a big differencein the long sprints and some relay races, and Tom Sroka(Justice, IL/Argo HS) is another freshman who looks toimprove the team in the area of throws.
Also competing in the sprint events are junior MichaelAguilar (Romeoville, IL/Romeoville HS), sophomore EricScott (Elgin, IL/Larkin HS) and junior Aaron Smith (SugarGrove, IL/Kaneland HS). Competing for spots in distanceraces are sophomore Scott Anderson (Algonquin, IL/JacobsHS), junior Danny Hernandez (Aurora, IL/Aurora CentralCatholic) and freshman Ryan Shannon (Morris, IL/MorrisHS). Competing in jumps will be sophomore Pierre Nealon(Mooseheart), the current indoor triple jump record holder;,Chris Ortega (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville HS);, and Matt Waite(Elgin, IL/Burlington Central HS). The throwers this yearlook to be very competitive with returning athletes in seniorJustin Harmon (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg HS) and sophomoreKeith Phelan (Wilmington, IL/Wilmington HS).
The Spartans will be a young team once again this year, but they have more experience than ever. The goals theyhave set for themselves are very lofty, but if they continue toimprove at the rate they have been, these goals areattainable. This is the first season that AU has a number ofathletes who have the ability to compete at a regional level. The Spartans also have a great opportunity to win theconference championship.

Eckhart Hall
Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of a seminary in the small town of Mendota, Ill. Though established initially to prepare graduatesfor ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to anew campus on the western edge of the nearby community of Aurora. With thischange came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institutionwas rechristened Aurora University.
In 1992, the Aurora and George Williams College traditions blended when thetwo institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for amerger eight years later.
Today Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s,and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seekingstudents a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses. AU offers its under-graduates a wide range of on- and off-campus learning experiences. Studentsparticipate in more than 40 musical, literary, religious, social and service organi-zations and play active roles in campus governance. The university also fields 18 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. The Spartans boast a winningtradition with 37 conference titles in recent years and 32 regular appearances innational tournaments.
The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a racquetball court, climbingwall, complete locker room facilities, training room, weight room, aerobic-activ-ities room, classroom and coaches’ offices.
At AU, we believe that the educational needs of students are served bestthrough the formation of strategic partnerships with institutions of like vision, mission and values. Such collaborations also enhance the well being of thecommunities around our campus. For example, our innovative partnership with the West Aurora School District is recognized nationally as a model foreducational reform. New this year is AU’s $14 million Institute for Collaborationthat houses this growing collaboration and the students and faculty it nurtures. Our George Williams College at Williams Bay, WI, also is the scene for importantcollaborative efforts. Last year, the residential, conference and academic facility, developed in partnership with Children’s Oncology Services Inc., opened. In theyears ahead, the new building will serve as the home to the One Step At A TimeCamp for children with cancer and the university’s rapidly growing academicprogram.
Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an hour’s drive of Chicagoand at the western end of the Illinois Research and Development Corridor. It isaccessible via Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit.
