YINTRODUCING

MEI-ANN CHENThe 2011-2012 Season marks the debut of

Mei-Ann Chen, the first new Music Director in

the history of the Chicago Sinfonietta.

Maestro Chen was selected after a two year

international search to inherit the baton

from Dr. Paul Freeman on his retirement.

The Chicago Sun-Times wrote “Chen has a flair for a

global repertoire that dovetails with the Chicago

Sinfonietta’s mission”, while Time Out Chicago has

praised her as “downright awe-inspiring”.

The first woman to win the Malko International

Conductors Competition, Mei-Ann Chen is considered

one of America’s most exciting young conductors.

We are delighted to bring her to Chicago!

Chicago!Join the celebration

as we introduce

Maestro Chen to

Chicago with a

musical “love letter”

to the multicultural

mosaic of the

city’s people and

Fate.It’s what inspired Beethoven’s

signature Symphony No. 5. Perhaps it’s what inspired Mei-Ann Chen to dream about becoming a conductor as a young girl in Taiwan. And maybe it was fate that brought Mei-Ann and the Sinfonietta together for the first time in the Fall of 2009. The first piece she performed with us was Saibei Dance and it was love at first sight (and sound!). The story begins with these first subscription concerts, and as fate would have it, you are invited.

A Special Non-Subscription PresentationWe have all lost people we love and music often gives voice to our feelings. The guitar in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez articulates both the profound sadness of the human experience and the joy and exuberance of life. Galindo’s rollicking Sones de Mariachi captures the celebratory nature that lays at the heart of Día de los Muertos. This concert, guest conducted by Maestro Hector Guzman, explores this rich, cultural tradition and gives us a chance to fondly remember those who have meant so much to us.

Do you remember gazing up at the night sky as a child and trying to imagine what an infinite universe might be? From the unforgettable theme of Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra to Gandolfi’s Garden of Cosmic Speculation and Ravel’s haunting Daphnis et Chloé, this concert poses all of the universal questions. What is out there? Why are we here? And how is it that certain melodies, arrangements, and sounds capture the vastness of space? We can’t promise any answers, but we can promise an evening of beautiful and inspiring music and breathtaking visuals.

Ever wish you could travel back in time? What must it have been like the first time the Beatles played together, or Yo-Yo Ma performed with an orchestra, or Ella Fitzgerald traded riffs with a sax player? The Chicago Sinfonietta’s story began in October of 1987 with our debut concert at Orchestra Hall. Paul Freeman lifted the baton, the musicians came to their ready positions, and musical history was made. Over the next twelve months we want to share a little bit of our story with you as we begin to celebrate the Chicago Sinfonietta’s 25th Anniversary Season. Think of this concert, comprised of works performed during the first year of the Sinfonietta’s history, as the first chapter.

Young, tragic love. Is there any other kind? Music

must have been invented to

give voice to this most basic of

all human experiences. And if

not music, then surely dance.

Listen for the melodic strains

of young lovers’ voices, for the

rhythm of their dance steps, and

for the yearning for that most

special someone. We have all

felt this. Every concert tells a

story and our season finale is

no exception.
