Welcome to historic St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church! Built
over a century ago, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Irish
faithful who were the first to call this church their parish. For
apart from the countless sacrifices made by that first
generation of faithful to build a suitable house of prayer and
divine worship for the greater glory of God, this beautiful
church would not exist.
Our beautiful stained glass windows, perhaps the most
stunning feature of the church, have been newly restored.
Rendered in the Munich Pictorial style, they depict scenes
from the life of Christ as well as images of various angels and
saints.
The careful observer will discern elements from the Gothic,
Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which together make up
the style known as Venetian Gothic. Bishop Paprocki
consecrated the new main and side altars in 2012 and
established the church as a personal parish on New Years
Day, 2014.
The liturgy celebrated at St. Rose follows the extraordinary
form of the Roman Rite, and employs primarily the ancient
Latin language. On Sundays, translations of both the ordinary
and propers of the Mass are provided. To follow daily Mass
you may wish to invest in a daily Latin English Missal
available at the rectory or download an app like IMass.
Internet access is available in church at StRoseChurch
(password: latinmass). Make sure to mute your device while
in church. Also, St. Rose’s state-of-the-art heating and
cooling system assures a comfortable environment year round
in which to pray and worship.
After both Sunday Masses, visitors are invited to meet and
greet our parishioners in the parish hall and socialize over
coffee and donuts. If interested in joining the parish, simply
call the office.

From the Pastor’s Desk 5th Sunday after Pentecost The Multiplication of Loaves
This Sunday’s Gospel describes the miracle of the
multiplication of the loaves that Jesus worked for a great
throng of people who had followed him to listen to him
and to be healed of various illnesses.
As evening fell the disciples suggested to Jesus that he
send the crowds away so that they might take some
refreshment. But the Lord had something else in mind:
“You give them something to eat” (Mt 14:16). However
they had “only five loaves... and two fish”. Jesus’
subsequent action evokes the sacrament of the
Eucharist: “He looked up to heaven, and blessed, and
broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the
disciples gave them to the crowds” (Mt 14:19).
The miracle consists in the brotherly sharing of a few
loaves which, entrusted to the power of God, not only
sufficed for everyone but enough was left over to fill 12
baskets. The Lord asked this of the disciples so that it
would be they who distributed the bread to the
multitude; in this way he taught and prepared them for
their future apostolic mission: in fact, they were to bring
to all the nourishment of the Word of life and of the
sacraments.
In this miraculous sign the incarnation of God and the
work of redemption are interwoven. Jesus, in fact, “went
ashore” from the boat to meet the men and women (cf. Mt
14:14). St Maximus the Confessor said that the Word of
God made himself present for our sake, by taking flesh,
derived from us and conformed to us in all things save
sin, in order to expose us to his teaching with words and
examples suitable for us”
Here the Lord offers us an eloquent example of his
compassion for people. Christ is attentive to material
needs but he wished to give more, because man always
“hungers for more, he needs more”. God’s love is present
in the bread of Christ; in the encounter with him “we
feed on the living God himself, so to speak, we truly eat
the ‘bread from Heaven’”.
In the Eucharist Jesus also makes us witnesses of God’s
compassion towards all our brothers and sisters. The
Eucharistic mystery thus gives rise to a service of charity
towards neighbor. St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of
the Society of Jesus, also bore witness to this. Indeed
Ignatius chose to live “finding God in all things, loving
him in all creatures” (cf. Constitutions of the Society of
Jesus, III, 1, 26).
Let us entrust our prayers to the Virgin Mary, so that
she may open our hearts to compassion for our neighbor
and to fraternal sharing.

Good News For the Ladies of Charity!
Yes, the Ladies of Charity of Quincy has been blessed
once again. Recently, the agency was able to purchase
the building at 24th and Elm (previously the Dollar Store,
not Dollar General) to use as the Ladies of Charity Thrift
Store. This structure will increase the present sales area
at the 12th & Chestnut location by over 50%, and the
storage area will be nearly doubled. Everything will be
conveniently located on one main floor, and parking
spaces will be plentiful.
All sales at the Thrift Store contribute to the funds
needed to provide items in short supply at the Ladies of
Charity Center at 4th & State--food, towels, blankets,
underwear, diapers, fans, pillows, and laundry detergent-
-items that are distributed to those in need.
Plan to visit the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store in their
new location later this summer.
Ladies of Charity--Gifts from the Garden
Is your bountiful garden producing more than you care to
eat or process this summer? If you have extra produce on
hand, the Ladies of Charity will be glad to accept your
donations to distribute to those in need. Please drop off
your excess garden goodies to the Ladies of Charity
Center at 4th and State, Quincy, on Mondays or Fridays,
from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Thank you so much!
Ladies of Charity Clients In Need of Pans
Even though the families who visit the Ladies of
Charity Center are only allowed a maximum of one skillet
and one pot per year, the need far outweighs the supply.
If you have an excess of these items, gently used, please
consider donating them to the Ladies of Charity.
PLEASE only leave donated items at either Ladies of
Charity facility when the building is open-- The
Center, 4th & State, Monday and Friday, 9:00-3:00; The
Thrift Store, 12th & Chestnut, Wed. through Saturday,
9:00-4:00
Thank you so much for all your generous donations,
past and future. Jane Haas
