Next Week’s Naplan Testing Students in Years 3 and 5 will next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday take the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and mathematics. The teachers have prepared the stu-dents for the tests, so that they are familiar with what is expected and can work toward their personal best. Parents are encouraged to support their children by ensuring that they are well rested, calm and arrive at school on time. It is suggest-ed that parents should try to avoid asking their children how they went and what the questions were when they come home as this can increase anxiety. Our mes-sage should always be that they will have done their very best on the day. Of course, if they want to chat about the tests, it is important to let this happen and ensure that they feel positive about their efforts. We take extensive and valuable information from the NAPLAN in terms of whole year level data and school trends. However, for individuals, it is not always reliable. The children are generally 8 and 10 years old and the tests are multiple-choice, (with the exception of writing), so anything can happen! The NAPLAN results will take several months to come back – usually arriving in Au-gust. A Department of Education and Training webinar which I attended described formalised testing results as having a lifespan of two weeks. Student achievement is best viewed in terms of teacher judgements and feedback about current class-room achievements. Below are the key dates for next week’s NAPLAN tests. 14th May Language Conventions (Spelling, grammar and punctuation knowledge/skills) 14th May Writing (Narrative or Persuasive) 15th May Reading 16th May Numeracy Education Week Education Week is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate excellence in educa-tion through open days, exhibitions and special events.
Did you know that 2019 is the 75th year of Education Week? Education Week 2019 is all about celebrating careers and pathways that will make your dream job come true. It is an opportunity for schools, TAFEs and Tech Schools to showcase

the work they are doing to support students in their career pathways.
What a wonderful opportunity it is to have fun and positive conversations with our students about what they want to be/do? The possibilities are endless! This year’s theme of Education Week is always alive and present at Warrandyte Primary School. We regularly talk about real life places where we would use our knowledge and skills across our teaching and learning programs.
At Warrandyte Primary School we are so excited to invite parents, prospective parents and the wider community to visit our school on the 22nd of May. You can visit classrooms during the day from 9am to 1.00pm or attend our Edu-cation Evening from 6.30pm to 7.45pm. The evening will see all of our classrooms open and we will be showcasing our student’s achievements. Across the evening there will be a STEM Electric Car display in our new STEM room and a Bush Band performance.
Happy Mother’s Day Mum I know I will be saying a big “Happy Mother’s Day” to my mum on Sunday. We would like to wish all the War-randyte Primary School mums a very happy Mother’s Day. We hope you will be spoilt with big hugs and thoughtful words. We also know that you will enjoy your gifts and cards which the students have made for you during Art ses-sions at school. Have a great day!

Watching my own children become parents is an unexpected parenting joy. Not in the light-hearted ‘your-turn-has-come’ way where older generations delight in watching their own children endure the same sleepless nights, naughty toddler behaviour and teenage rebelliousness that they experienced as parents. The joy for me lies in watching my adult kids protect, teach, nurture and support their children, in the timehonored way that parents have done for generations. This work, also known as generative parenting, was outlined by Ameri-can psychologists and researchers Dollahite, Hawkins and Brotherson in the 1990’s. Also known as mother work (and father work), generative parenting refers to the instinctive activities of parents that enable the next generation to survive and thrive. These activities range from providing kids with food and shel-ter and other basic needs through to developing more complex skills in their kids such as working with others, adapting to change and developing the resourcefulness needed for full independence. Like most parents my daughters want to be the best parents they can be so they both devour parenting books, attend courses when they can and join online chat groups for support and ideas. But it’s their mother work, their instinctive work, that’s their most potent parenting force. Here’s why. Mother work is protective When my eldest daughter visits our house she does a quick reconnaissance trip through each room, lifting errant blind cords and removing heavy objects, to make our house safe for her two boys to move around. The protective side is strong . Mother work is educative When my youngest daughter patiently explains to her exuberant young three year old that she needs to allow oth-er children to share her toys, she is doing important teaching work. That requires super patience. Mother work is nurturant The safety my daughters provide when they wrap their arms around their children when they’ve fallen and hurt themselves comes naturally to them. Mother work is supportive The emotional support these young women provide to their children when they’ve been upset by the thoughtless or rough behaviours of siblings and friends is often hard work. But they are up to the task. My daughters’ mother work will continue well into their children’s teen years and beyond. The nature of the work will change with each developmental stage but the intent of the work –to nurture, protect, teach and support – will stay the same. Men can do this work too, but they do it differently. When a mother instinctively protects she generally draws her child closer before searching out the source of fear. There’ll be lots of cuddles before she puts a nightlight on to ease a child’s fear of the dark. When a father instinctively protects he’s more likely to eliminate the source of fear, and skill his child up to fend for themselves. He’ll prove there’s nothing to be scared of when the light goes out, and show his child how to turn on the light when needed. Both are valid approaches, and are indicative of the gender differences in child-rearing. This Mother’s Day, it’s my daughters’ instinctive mother work that I’ll celebrate, as that is real magic of parenting. Happy Mother’s Day.

OSHC News This week at aftercare has been very productive and educational. We have engaged in many crafts for the special women in our lives as well as conducting a very fascinating and fun science experie-ment. We made a large tub of oobleck together (each child had a special job) and discovered the effects of golf and table tennis balls falling into oobleck from a great height (the slide’s platform). We also had a competition to see who could get the most golf balls into the oobleck at one time. It was a lot of fun and a great week.
Curriculum Day-Monday 27 May
We will run a curriculum day care program if we have sufficient book-ings. Please advise the oshc team or the school office if you would like to book your child in.

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2019
This year we are participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through
this program we will be able to obtain new educational resources for our school
and all we need to do is shop at Woolworths for your groceries.
From Wednesday 1 May to Tuesday 25 June, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. Place the stick-
ers onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into
the Collection Box here at school. This year we are lucky enough to have a Collection Box outside Woolworths at
The Pines shopping centre.
At the end of the promotion, we will be able to procure some great new equipment. The range is extensive and
offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, ICT, Science, Sports, Arts & Crafts and
more.
Please inform your relatives, friends and neighbours to collect the Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers for our school
