Little Rock Bible Study: We will meet this Sunday, April 2 at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. Newcomers are always welcome.
From the Desk of Fr. Steve: As I announced at the weekend Masses several months ago, in August of 2015, the front wall of St. Mary's Church suffered another leak as the result of driving rain. After hiring an architect to review the wall itself and the previous attempts to fix the leak, and after having met with our parish finance council, we have come to the point now where a decision must be made as to how to proceed. We have been informed by our architect, who consulted with a structural engineer, that as it is currently, due to water damage and insufficient attempts to fix the problem by previous contractors, the front wall of St. Mary's is not structurally sound. This of course means that there is greater urgency in fixing the problem. Due to the seriousness of the deterioration of the internal structure of the wall, and due to the fact that the lack of proper window installation around the upper stained glass windows is the ultimate cause, a cause which up to now has not been formally addressed, the project to fix the front of the Church is going to cost much more than originally anticipated. Because of this, I have asked Mr. Robert Fern, the architect working on our Church project, as well as the contractor that we are planning to hire, to address the parish in a "town-hall" fashion, in order to explain in detail the nature of the problem, and what options are available to finally address these problems and correct them once and for all. Therefore, I am urging all parishioners to please plan to attend a parish town-hall meeting on Wednesday, April 19th, at 6:30 pm in the St. Mary's Parish Hall. Mr. Fern will be making a presentation, and I will be seeking input on the project itself and ideas for raising the necessary funds. Again, I can't stress enough how important it is for us to try to be present for this meeting if possible, since this project will likely be in the forefront of our parish awareness and activity for the next several months. Light refreshments will be provided. Thank you. ~Fr. Steve

Fr. Steve’s Teaching for Consideration: The Sacrament of Penance, Part IV
“Confession is the sacrament of the tenderness of God, His way of embracing us.” -Pope Francis
In the last three bulletin articles, I have been explaining both the rationale and the methodology for the sacrament of penance. In this fourth and final part of the mini-series of bulletin articles on the sacrament of penance, I would like to step a bit away from the theological framework and catechesis that has been our focus in the previous articles, and devote this article to more of what (I hope!) is a gentle but firm encouragement for us. Most of us know that for healthy teeth and gums, it’s very important that we try to get to the
dentist at least once a year for teeth cleaning and check-up. Similarly, we know that it is in our best interest to undergo a yearly physical with our physician to check our current health status, but also to discover any developing issues. My fear is that as Catholics, sometimes we can tend to view the sacrament of penance, going to confession, in a similar vein- a yearly spiritual “check-up,” where I get my soul cleansed and are good to go for another year, rather than a blessed and holy opportunity to be made used of on a frequent basis, in order to be healed from the wounds of sin, to receive advice and encouragement from the priest, and to be powerfully reminded of the intensity and reality of God’s merciful love for us. Now, it is true that technically, we are only required by the Church to go to confession once each year. But that’s the minimum requirement. Another one of the Church’s minimum requirements is that we are to receive Holy Communion at least once a year at Easter time. That requirement may seem strange to us, especially if we are use to going up for Communion every time that we are at Mass. Why would the Church need to require that a Catholic receive Holy Communion at least once a year? Because many centuries ago, Catholics were so very convinced of the infinite holiness of Blessed Eucharist and so very convinced of the detrimental and damaging effects of their sins, that unfortunately people began to see the reception of Holy Communion as reserved only for the saintly. In other words, nobody seemed to have felt spiritually prepared to receive Holy Communion, and therefore, few people would receive Holy Communion at Mass. In fact, the Church became so concerned by this development, that She had to mandate that Catholics receive Holy Communion at least once a year, provided they are in a state of grace (i.e., not conscious of having unconfessed mortal sin on their soul). I would argue that in some ways, we as a Church may have the opposite problem now- most everyone at Mass typically comes forward to receive Holy Communion, but the lines for confession are noticeably shorter than perhaps they once were. Now, there are probably a lot of reasons for why the sacrament of penance has not been as frequently used by Catholics in recent times, but I am not interested in debating those reasons here. What I am interested in is encouraging us to have the spiritual and moral courage to ask ourselves these questions: if it has been more than a year since I last went to confession, why is that? What am I afraid of? What is holding me back from going to confession and having my sins washed away? Why am I depriving my soul of the healing balm that confession and absolution of my sins brings? These are not easy questions to ask ourselves, or to answer, but they are so very vital for our spiritual health. If I haven’t been to confession for a long time, or if I only go very infrequently as a sort of “check-up,” is my soul better off or worse off? And what I am willing to do to change that? Brothers and sisters, we now have two full weeks of Lent remaining. May I kindly suggest that if we have not been to confession in a long time, that we consider taking advantage of the opportunity to go to confession sometime during these next two weeks? I have scheduled extra times in the bulletin where I and Fr. Michael will be hearing confessions at our parishes for this purpose- so that people can conveniently take advantage of the beautiful sacrament of penance. So please, no matter how long it has been, I am encouraging each of us to make use of the sacrament of penance this Lent. Believe me when I say that as a priest, I love to walk the road of reconciliation with penitents, that I am happy and joyful when people come to confession, especially when they have been away from it for some time, and I wish only to help God’s people to experience the relief, joy and peace that comes from hearing those amazing words from the mouth of the priest: “I absolve you from your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

Youth Ministry Join our faith community in a life-changing Lenten
journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. We
encounter Evelina in Zambia as she and other mothers
in her community learn new ways to provide
nutritious meals for their growing children and
families. How do we ensure that those who are hungry
have not only good but true nourishment? Pick up a
bowl at the back of the church. Please return them by
Easter Sunday. May these 40 days better prepare us to
encounter ourselves, our neighbors and our God.
Visit crsricebowl.org for more information.
Stations of the Cross
Stations of the Cross: The praying of the Stations of
the Cross will take place every Friday evening at 7:00
p.m. during the Lenten Season. Please plan to join us
to walk the way of the cross with our Lord!

So that we can purchase flowers to decorate the
Church for the Easter Liturgies, we ask that you make
an offering to the project. Donations to cover the cost
of the flowers would be greatly appreciated. Please
