From the Desk of Father Steve:

This past week has been an incredibly difficult one for our diocesan Church. We were all shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our Bishop last Sunday morning. His death at such a young age, and while he was still very actively leading our diocese, has been very difficult to process and understand. And the sudden loss of our local Shepherd can leave us feeling uncertain and unmoored both as a local Church and individually. Bishop Sirba was an excellent bishop, a great leader, and a kind pastor of souls. He will truly be missed. In the midst of this loss, and the confusion that it can often bring, we might be asking ourselves, “so what happens now? What should we do?” Here I would mention several things. First and foremost, please pray, brothers and sisters. Pray for the soul of Bishop Sirba,

that God may be merciful to him and welcome him home to eternal life in Heaven. We have great reason to hope that Bishop Sirba is well on his way to enjoying the eternal life and happiness promised by God to those who remain faithful to Him and do His Will on earth. But one of the greatest acts of love that we can carry out for those who have died is to pray for them. So please pray for the repose of the soul of Bishop Sirba. Please pray also for Bishop Sirba’s family, and pray for our local church, the Diocese of Duluth. Obviously, we are now without a bishop for the time being, and that naturally brings its own potential difficulties. So pray for our diocese, and especially pray for the priest who will have been elected as the Diocesan Administrator while we await the appointment of our new bishop by Pope Francis. Pray too for all of those who will be involved in assisting the Holy Father in choosing our next bishop, that God may guide them and lead them according to His holy will. My friends, I also want to offer us words of comfort today. Nothing in this life is a surprise to God. God is very much in control, and His hand is guiding our local church and will continue to do so. While we grieve the loss of our shepherd, Bishop Sirba, I hope that we can also have confidence and peace in knowing that, as St. Paul so wonderfully reminds us, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). Bishop Sirba himself had a remarkable trust in God’s will and providence, and firmly believed that even in the most difficult of circumstances, God is at work, God can be trusted, and God is faithful. Bishop Sirba’s episcopal motto was “Fiat voluntas tua,” which is Latin for, “Thy will be done.” So as we face the future, I want to encourage us to trust and have faith that God will provide. He will assist us in our time of need, and in all things, God is trustworthy, God is faithful, God is true. In a future bulletin article, I will speak about the Church’s process for appointing a new bishop for a diocese, because I know many of us may have questions about how all that works. For now, I would like to share with you one of my favorite quotes from Bishop Sirba. It came from one of his homilies at which he was speaking to the priests and deacons, but it is certainly applicable to all of us. He said this: “You will help people most by encountering the love of Jesus yourself.” He was communicating to us a vital truth of our faith that in order to share the love of Jesus with others, we have to first experience and receive the love of Jesus ourselves through a life of devotion and prayer. Having a personal and real relationship with Jesus Christ was critically important to Bishop Sirba, and that relationship is what carries us through the ups and downs, joys and sorrows of this life on our way to eternal life. May God be with our diocesan church during this difficult time, and may He grant us all His love and peace which surpasses all our expectations and desires.

God bless you!~ Fr. Steve

Cassi’s Corner

In this week’s Gospel we hear John the Baptist crying

out, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” As we continue in

our focused intercession for our loved ones who have

left the faith, let us pray that God would clear all

obstacles to them returning, that their hearts will be

made ready to receive Him this Christmas, and that

God will block all those who would try to lead them

astray. Meditate this week on our Gospel reading:

Matthew 3:1-12.

Let our hearts, too, be made open to receive Him.

Perhaps, this week you can also go to confession and

offer the graces of it for those you are praying for.
