IN ADDITION, A GREENHOUSE (OR HOT HOUSE) WAS MANAGED AS WELL AS RUNNING A SMALL CHICKEN AND TURKEY CONCERN.I ’M NOT MUCH OF A GREEN-FINGERED PERSON SO I CANNOT ARGUE WITH THOSE WHO CONTEND THAT WE HAVE UNSUITABLE SOIL (UNLIKE MOUNT GAMBIER’S RICH VOLCANIC LOAM). NEVERTHELESS, WHY’IS IT THAT SUCH A VARIETY OF PLANT, FLOWERS, SHRUBS AND TREES DO MANAGE TO SURVIVE AND FLOTJHISH ROUND 0UR HOMES?MANAGEMENT ISN’T GOING TO STOP ANY RESIDENT WHO WOULD LIKE TO TEND A VEGETABLE PLOT AND ALL ASSISTANCE WOULD BE PROVIDER TO ESTABLISH A SUITABLE AREA. SO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RESPOND TO THIS INVITATION, PLEASE SEE ME.

THIS LEADS ME TO ECHOING WHAT WAS SAID IN THE LAST "NEWS"ABOUT "LIFE BE IN IT - SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY". SOMETIMES THE "THING" LACKS SUFFICENT "BODIES" TO EITHER GET AN IDEA OFF THE GROUND OR PHYSICAL IMPUT WHICH IS OFTEN REQUIRED FROM RESIDENTS TO SUSTAIN AN ACTIVITY. I ’VE HEARD IT MENTIONED OF LATE THAT "WOULDN’T IT BE NICE TO START A PAINTING CLASS AGAIN"; "WE USED TO ENJOY THE ODD MUSIC OR BOOK APPRECIATION AFTERNOON"; "HOW ABOUT A COUPLE OF PUTTING HOLES ON THE VACANT LAND TO THE SOUTH-WEST OF THE SETTLEMENT (BETWEEN MY HOUSE AND THE WORKSHOP) - A WALK IN THIS AREA MIGHT BE MORE FUN FOR SOME WITH AN OLD GOLF CLUB AND BALL TO HIT". SOMEONE EVEN SUGGESTED RESIDENTS MIGHT LIKE TO TEND AND REAR LAMBS WHICH OTHERWISE ARE DESTROYED WHEN MUM ENDS UP AT THE ABATTOIRS! THE ANSWER TO THESE AND SIMILAR SUGGESTIONS, LIE WITH RESIDENTS. THERE ALREADY IS A REASONABLY WIDE RANGE OF ACTIVITY AND DUE ALLOWANCE NEEDS TO BE MADE IN RECOGNISING THAT NOT ALL RESIDENTS ARE PHYSICALLY ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN SOME OF OUR MORE ACTIVE LEISURE PURSUITS.' NEVERTHELESS, THERE IS NO REASON WHY NEW IDEAS CANNOT BE GIVEN A GO, PROVIDED THERE IS A NUCLEUS OF INTERESTED RESIDENTS WHO ARE PREPARED TO DEVOTE TIME AND EFFORT FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHERS. PLEASE, DON’T ALL RUSH ME AT ONCE I

TO END ON A REMINDER OF A VERY IMPORTANT ACTIVITY WHICH DOESNEED THE SUPPORT -OF A L L...... OUR ANNUAL FAIR IS BUT THREEMONTHS AWAY. SATURDAY OCTOBER 16TH WHICH’COINCIDES WITH VICTORIA'S ELDERLY CITIZENS* WEEK.

At our meeting on July 7th/82, Mr^. Nora Wilder, our Secretary, resigned, much to the regret of all of us. She has held that post for the past four years, and has done a very good job, with the co-operation of Miss Hilda Blagburn. Sincere thanks, Nora, we are pleased to know that you will still be running our Saturday Afternoon game of Bingo. For new Residents,, this game is played just for fun. A small gift is awarded for first prize, bpoby, and a door prize, as the .proceeds go to the purchase of things needed in our hospital. The charge is only 50 cents for the afternoon ofFun, and also includes a "cuppa" and biscuits or scones*

We have been told by the Fire Offioer that our Hospital must have wool curtains as a precaution against fire.I know that it was only two years ago that we purchased new curtains, but we were not told then what the material had to be. Our Hospital still needs our help, so come on everybody, please give a little, we need our Hospital, and our Hospital needs our help. Any information you may require about' what our auxiliary does I am sure committee members, Matron, or I myself will be happy to supply you with.

Yours sincerely,ENA PERRY, Secretary.

A Heavy Responsibility. One hot summer's day a clergyman doing the rounds of his

parish noticed an elderly woman pushing a perambulator, withvery great difficulty, up a very steep hill. His offer to help was gratefully accepted. Puffing and perspiring he pushed the pram to the top of the hill himself, Remarking "Madame, that's a very heavy baby you have there!" Lor' Reverend, she replied"That aint no baby" "THAT'S THE OLD MAN'S BEER!

To the Manager, B.S.L.Desr Sir,

Prom the Hospital window, where I am writing this , letter, it is very pleasing to note the beautiful gardens and surrounds. Beautiful lawns, .trees and shrubs -a wonderful- background for our cottages. A lot of ground is still not all used,’and I think could be put to a profitable use by making ' vegetable plots made and used by our energetic residentsi- 1 We have an abundance of leaf mould, grass cuttings and lawn clippings, all of which are a natural aid to vegetable growing.

The kitchen could use the products, and we would get1 • a lot of satisfaction in producing something of value.

Trusting that you view this idealwith favour.Yours Sincerely,

A RESIDENT.(name supplied)

WHEN YOU’RE PEELING BLUE

I have a splendid remedyfor when you're feeling blue; ‘‘

It always seems to work with me so I hope it works with you.

Just use your imaginationand if you are hard to -please

Just think how horrid it would be If you were one of these. -

R A N D O M R E F L E C T I O N SWhat will be, will be.

Not' far from England - but nearer Brittany ■ -Lies a small tropic island - a gein of the sea,With its'beaches’and bays, of colouful sand,And the flowers in profusion that grow in this land-.

E’or its early produce it could stake quite a claim,Tho' its small dairy cattle have gained greater fame; Tax-free to wit, and record sunshine in the year,A haven to live in with hardly a peer!

But later came the pictures, the cars and the plane - Its former serenity ceased any longer to reign. They brought in the wealthy - their taxes to evade,And the holiday-makers - the beaches to raid. There followed prosperity - with 'crime in its wake,And all the noise and bustle took some icing off the-cake

Perhaps you've -guessed this island's name Where life will never be the same! These happenings make it plain to seeAlthough it's regrettable- "What will be, will be!

Since our last report we have continued our good work and have passed our'target of $4,000 before Pair Day. ‘There are now seven ladies.involved with the shop. Mrs.Knight and Mrs. Towan are still crocheting the Baby and Knee Rugs. These are very popular and are beautifully done. Thank You to both ladies. As our regular patrons know, Mrs. Johnson had a major opp. ahd is now at Coff's Harbour until the middle of August, and we hope .she will be much better on her return.Por some weeks Mrs. Martini has taken charge of the shop until 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday so that Mrs. Cann and I could go swimming. I personally am very grateful to her.A very new Resident was most helpful last week. She kindly took six dresses and washed and ironed them. They are now ready for the Pair. Thank You Anne Crisp. The Curiosity Shop is doing fine. Sis Baade has done a good job there, she is at the moment nursing her sister in Tasmania, so Margaret Pelmear has once again stepped in to help out. I shall be away from July 25th to October 20th, so Mrs, Cann will be in charge. Please support her as you have supported me. ¥/e are anxious to be able to give $6,000 when hand-over day comes.

KATHLEEN FOGGITT.

THANKSGLADYS MARCROPT WOULD LIKE TO THANK Sae and her Staff, for the kindnesses and care shown to her during her illness, • > also the care and attention given to her whilst in hospital, her many friends on the Settlement also - and a big Thank You for all your kind thoughts and good deeds.I am very happy to be in Cox Court. COURT NEWS JULY, 1982Greetings Everybody! on this cold, foggy morning! After such a beautiful Autumn, mild and sunny, we do feel the icy winter blasts! However, to quote "If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?" Our .first event on April, 18th was the "Walk against Want", with several of our Court Family taking part, some assisted by Rae and Margaret, and the honours for sponsor - raising went to Mrs Penny, who passed in $57. Bravo!

Early in May the Red Cross Party was as enjoyable as ever, and much appreciated and well attended and earned a big Thank You to the Red-Cross, Ladies. _ , .

Recently Rae held a "Trash and Treasure Morning in Cox Crt. which was well-patrbnised and earned a sum of $140 or so. Congratulations, Rae, and to all who helped. My .regrets. I could not attend owing to illness. Maybe just as well, as I might have been sold as trash or antique!

Several of our Court Family have spent some time in hospital, and we are very happy to have dear "Glad" Marcroft back, and now cosily settled in Cox Court, also Mrs.- St. John, after long hospitalisation, is home, and has made good progress . Congratulations to both* We are sorry to hear of Mr. Ron. Tweddle.'s ■illness in Hospital, and send our good wishes for his recovery;

We were sad to lose Mr. Bob. Whittaker after many weeks in hospital, a dear, kindly man. Some of us attended his funeral in St. Laurence Chapel. Also Miss Papworth passed away after a sudden illness. May they rest in God's peace.

After a short stay at Broughton, Miss Long has returned, and is now in Cox Court. Mrs Kelly, well-remembered for her 21 years of service in the "Jumble"(now Op Shop) and many activities, is warmly welcomed into Collins Court.Congratulations to all who celebrated; birthdays since our last report - Mrs. Penny, 95 in May, and Mrs. Tingman, 94 July !!Also Mrs. Malone, and many I may have missed. We wish them'all many more happy years in our Court Family, and Good Health.

And a big Appreciation to all our "Girls" who look after us and feed us well, and'don't growl at us for our queer "Tastes" And-a-special Thank You to Rae and Margaret, also Thelma and "Bernie".

Cheerio and God Bless.YOUR COURT REPORTER

A bishop turned to his congregation to say "Peace be with you" only to find that the sound system was not working."There's something wrong with the microphone, * he announced, and the congregation, seeing his lips move, but hearing nothing, dutifully intoned " AND ALSO WITH YOU".

C O M M U N I T Y - A I D A B R O A DC. A. A. ,, as it, is generally known, was"born" here on the Settlement, only under a different name, by Residents giving something out of their meagre pensions in the 40.’s to Father Tucker.

. Today, C. A. A. is very active in helping Third World countries, as well as the Australian Aboriginal.

Some of the projects that will benefit from the "Walk 1982 are : Philippines, Australia, (North Australian Aboriginal) Africa, Bangladesh,' India and Sri Lanka.

The Local Branch: What a marvellous response to "Our Walk" - $400,00. An excellent effort for so few walkers.

Educational project: Earlier this year, after discussion it was agreed that our project should be the Australian Aboriginal, which so far we have found very interesting.Box holders are cordially invited to come and join with us by taking part of our project, and so building up our group. - '

Meetings are held on the 4th (fourth) Sunday of each month at 20 Tuxen Avenue, commencing at 2.15 p.m. and finishing about 4.00 p.m., with a cup of tea and biscuits. The next meeting will be on Sunday, 2,5th July.It is hoped that the program will be the Aboriginal Film- "My Survival as an Aboriginal"; or, Aboriginals singing in,the Kimberleys, Western Australia; and in North Queensland - from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies.

May we see you on July 25th?The Rev’d. JIM MILES

Secretary/Treasurer (Mrs.) E. Otten

Box Secretary.

The Entertainers have been very busy in the last few months. We have been entertaining various groups outside, and always receive a warm welcome wherever we go.

In April we went to Upwey to visit the Dandenong Ranges G.W.A. at their Pun Day, and had an enjoyable time watching them perform.A day we enjoyed very much was when we went to the Red Gross to entertain the patients from the Kingston Centre. What a lovely time we all had! We even had our photographs taken for the local newspapers, and the Sister-in-Charge invited us to entertain at Kingston. In June we put on a Concert for the Visitors from Box Hill and Aspendale, and they left saying how much.they enjoyed their visit, and intend to come back again. We would like to thank all the girls at Rosella St. for their help in sending us costumes, and other items for our Group, also our own Opp. Shop, and we mustn't forget our Office Staff, who are a great help to us. And to those Residents who have given us donations and gifts for Raffles, we would like to say Thank You.

We are pleased to report as in previous years, members of the Committee and many others, are working hard once again to ensure that we have another successful Pair. The Stalls on Polling Day proved a great success, and our P.E.S.A. afternoons, and the Cake Stall, keep bringing in a little money to keep us solvent. Thanks to Deaconess Alfred and her helpers, the Plant Nursery continues to do good business, especially at the weekends, but more helpers are still required.
