TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH,2020 I’m sure you remember the public service announcement that used to be on TV, “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” Of course, it meant that we have a personal responsibility for our friends, if we really are their friends. This may go against the grain of people who don’t want to get involved in the lives of others. As Christians, we have a responsibility towards others. We call this fraternal correction. This theme permeates all our readings today. In Ezekiel, the prophet is to be the watchman to warn of danger: “Thus says the LORD: You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me.” Ezekiel has a lot on his shoulders to speak the words of God. We have a moral duty to speak the truth about right and wrong, whether to our society or individuals. There are so many ready to record wrongdoing on their phones and post it, but little to intervene. Perhaps the recent protests that are peaceful and that go unreported are now speaking out for those who can’t or simply won’t. St.Paul also says to us “Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another;for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” Perhaps it comes down to this, to love another enough to say or do something.
