Want to see men from all walksof life don a pair of heels andgo for a stroll throughdowntown Hanover? So do we,which is why planning isalready underway for YWCAHanover’s Safe Home Walk aMile event in August. We’reexcited - for the 8th year in arow - to create a localopportunity for people toparticipate in and support Walka Mile in Her Shoes®: TheInternational Men's March toStop Rape, Sexual Assault &Gender Violence. By wearingwomen’s shoes, male walkerscall attention to genderstereotypes and expectations. The event creates a positive, nonconfrontational way toopen conversations about theunderlying causes andconsequences of men’ssexualized violence. This is Safe Home’s majorfundraiser for the year. Lastyear, we nearly doubled in size

with 418 participants and weraised over $50,000! With yourcontinued support, we hope tobreak that record this year!  Youcan help us by becoming a teammember, individual walker, orsponsor. Although Walk a Mile is a funevent, it doesn’t change theseriousness of domestic violencearound the world and closer tohome. Fortunately, Safe Homehas been able to expand ourservices to three offices: one inHanover, one in Gettysburg, andone at the York CountyCourthouse. All three branchesprovide comprehensive, 24-hourdomestic violence servicesincluding legal advocacy andassistance with ProtectionOrders, civil legal referrals, adultand child therapy and substanceabuse treatment referrals, options counseling, safetyplanning, temporary safehousing, community education, referrals to local shelters, andoutreach and support for humantrafficking victims.

SAFE HOME WALK A MILE 2020

Domestic violence, leftunaddressed, affects ourcommunities in sometimesunseen and often unexpectedways, including an increase in:homelessness, localizedeconomic depression, use ofand need for police andmedical resources, child abuseand hunger, and crimestatistics. Domestic violencecan also contribute todeclining home values.  SafeHome provides the tools tofight domestic violence andhelps individuals, families, andcommunities to becomestronger, safer, healthier, andhappier. Show your community youcare and support Safe Home’sWalk a Mile event!  If you’re aman, get yourself some sturdyheels and have some fun whileshowing your support. Womenand children can walk, too,and they can wear whateverkind of shoes they want! Add us to your calendar today!

to victims of domesticviolence. Safe Homeemployees have providedservices 24 hours a day, 7 daysa week for 38 years and thisvirus was not going to stopthem. Childcare services, like YWCAHanover's Early LearningCenter and School AgeLearning Academy, had to beclosed in the same way allschools closed physicallocations.  The children andfamilies were now in their ownhomes following the safetyguidelines of the Centers forDisease Control (CDC) andother government entities.  Programs and events had tobe cancelled and postponed,so we spent dayscommunicating with thoseaffected by those closures.   The Management Teamcontinued working daily toput safety guidelines intoplace, acquire PPE’s,thoroughly sanitize all areasof our facil it ies located inasasa

Communications to employees, clients, parents, ourstakeholders, partners, funders,Board of Directors, andcommittee members wereconstantly flowing and adaptedon an almost daily basisaccordingly.  The families we serve inchildcare programs werecalling and asking when wemight open. Those individualswho were considered"essential employees" neededto return to work. YWCA Hanover will continue toserve our communitythroughout this crisis andbeyond.  All programs andevents are being assessed toreconfigure ways to operatevirtually or otherwise.  We willbe here for you just as wehave been for 100 years now, from 1920 to 2020.   As always, thank you for yourexceptional support.

For the past one hundred years,YWCA Hanover has been a sourceof fellowship, support, andcommunity volunteerism for thewomen of Hanover. To celebrateour Centennial Anniversary, we arelooking at where we have been, where we are, and where we aregoing. Melding this frameworktogether are two of our currentboard members, both of whomappeared in Evening Sun articleswritten in the 1980s. Michele Witman has seen manychanges at YWCA Hanover sinceshe first became involved with theorganization in 1986. “Serving onthe Board helped me learn aboutour community, be a part ofsomething outside of family andwork, and build confidence," shesaid. Prior to joining the Board, she onlyknew the YW from going to the YTeen dances. In the YWCA at thattime, there were a variety of clubsto meet the needs and interests ofdifferent age groups. The mostpopular programs were fitness-based and childcare services. There was an established, stronggymnastics program, and SafeHome was just starting. After graduating from college,Witman started her career at alocal accounting firm. “I was askedto go out and get involved in thecommunity, so I joined a feworganizations, but the fit didn’tfeel right,” she said. When she wasasked to join the YW Board, sheknew she found her niche.

“I was in awe of who I was sittingwith at the Board table. They wereall strong women who were involvedand known in the community. I amstill friends with some of these greatladies." Michelle Mowrer joined the YWCAHanover Board of Directors threeyears ago. “I learned more about theYWCA and it made me realize thatbeing part of this organization wasexactly what I needed in my life,”she said. Though a fairly recent boardmember, Mowrer is very familiarwith YWCA Hanover. Her firstmemory of the YWCA was when sheattended preschool and helpedpaint pictures on the catwalkwindows. She still looks up at thecatwalk to see what is beingdisplayed when driving by. Shecommented, “Children usually donot remember their preschool, but Ihave a few distinct and fondmemories of the YWCA.” She recallsthe kind teachers and her first set offriends, as well as remembering“learning to tie my shoes and beingthe child that never wanted to takenaps.” Mowrer goes on to say, “WhatI didn’t realize then was the impactthat the YWCA had on ourcommunity.” Mowrer is a 2006 South Westernalum and a Penn State Universitygraduate who feels “blessed that Iwas able to grow up in this amazingsmall town and see how it hasevolved over the years!” She hasalways known she wanted to be alarge part of this community andhelp in any way that she could.

Mowrer also serves on the Board ofDirectors of the Hanover AreaYoung Professionals, she is aChamber Ambassador for theHanover Chamber of Commerce, and serves on the 2nd Saturdaycommittee for Main Street Hanover. "The amazing impact that theYWCA currently makes in thiscommunity by providing familieswith reasonable childcare and adedicated domestic violencestaff shows the love andcompassion that this organizationhas running through its veins. "The YWCA has grown and evolvedalong with the little community ofHanover and it continues to growand expand to be able to servicemore people. We are proud to nowbe serving Adams County , as well. "My vision for the YWCA Hanover isto continue to expand and be ableto offer more childcare services to alarger portion of our community. Ialso would like to see us expand

our domestic violence support and offer more resources toour community, to help those who are currently exposed todomestic violence and educate more people on how toprevent it. Our world is evolving and unfortunately, wehave more and more people exposed to different types ofdomestic violence, including teenagers. "Our mission is to provide support to this community tocombat domestic violence and prevent racism. As a boardmember, I know we have our work cut out for us, but themore we can get the word out that we are here to help, themore people will trust us to be their support system. I feelthere is too much hatred in this world and if we can be alittle part of the positive light that shines on the childrenand families we service every day, we are making adifference!" Witman, in the Evening Sun article from the 1980s, saidshe found the right combination of professionalism andconcern for humanity in YWCA Hanover. Her thoughts onthe organization today echo those same impressions:“Being on the Board, I realized it takes a team to build astrong community and I started to get involved in otherorganizations – soccer club, scouts, PTO, Relay for Life,Walk a Mile. All to help make our community a greatplace for our families to live and work.”

Thirty-four years later, Witman is still involved with the YWCAand has returned to the Board of Directors as Board President.“We are still a thriving organization supported by a strong, working Board and a great community.” YWCA Hanover has been committed to providing the Hanoverarea community with 100 years of service, advocacy, unity, andfellowship; in partnership with amazing individuals likeMichele Witman, Michelle Mowrer, and all of the YW Board ofDirectors and volunteers dedicated to the Hanover community,YWCA Hanover will have the opportunity to serve for 100 moreyears. YWCA Hanover is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, anddignity for all.

We have been enjoying the school year in our School AgeLearning Academy (SALA). One of our highlights was avisit from Reptile Invasion. Our students learned aboutvarious species of reptiles and had the chance to holdsome of them. In music, we have been learning new musical games and drama each week with Deb Smith. Multiple research studies havedemonstrated a correlation between music instruction and play at a young age and increased listeningskills. These listening skills are closely tied to the abilityto: perceive speech in a noisy background, payattentin

attention, and keep sounds in memory, which are allskills students need to be successful in school. We aregrateful for Miss Deb and what she offers to ourstudents. Recently, we added tone chimes to ourprogram, and the students are beginning to make “ALittle Night Music” as they learn to ring tone chimes.

Camp Phoenix will begin on June 8 and go throughAugust 14, 2020.  We will have a fun-filled summerwith activities that include weekly field trips andswimming for children in grades 2-6.  Registrationforms are available on our website and at the frontdesk.

DEB SMITH

Hey Friends! Here is the scoop from the desk of DebSmith. We were off to a great start in 2020. InFebruary, Myneca Ojo was our guest reader forStory Time with Deb Smith. She read an awesomebook called, Have You Thanked an Inventor Today?,by Patrice McLaurin. The young protagonist in thebook highlighted the many contributions to ourdaily lives made by African-American inventors. Theparticipants enjoyed the story, coloring, and asnack. Our next story time will involve signlanguage.

GIRLS LOVING LIFE

A free program for girls in grades 2-12 is a greatplace to learn confidence and build friendships. Using our five tenets as the basis for our instruction, our program continues to grow and offer moreopportunities and experiences for our young ladies. Each session runs for eight weeks on Saturdays.Every Saturday has a different focus and activity, butwe're always centered on loving your soul, lovingothers, loving your body, loving learning andgrowing, and loving life.

The program's activities are designed for  our girls ingrades 2-8. Each week, we have discussions, activities, and journaling to reinforce whichevertenet we are working on that day. Our mentors, girls in grades 9-12, help lead activitiesand support the younger girls. They are not onlystrong role models for the younger girls, but they arealso an amazing support group for each other.Whether working on a STEAM challenge or makingblankets for the animal shelter, Girls Loving Life is aplace where girls can be proud of who they are.

Our Black History Month celebration included a bustrip to the African American Museum in Washington,DC. The museum is a testament to the lives, history, and culture of African Americans. The most movingpart of the museum for me was the coffin of EmmettTill. If you are not familiar with his story, you canread about it at https://bit.ly/2yrv7zB. The trip wasinspirational and moving. Stay tuned for our nextbus trip.  Our UpStanders Youth Council is off to a strongstart. They collected and packed different items forthe Hanover homeless shelter. They areworking on activities and events for the future.

Our league, though grieving multiple cancelledpractices, games, and tournaments, is standingup together in the face of adversity. We havebeen meeting on ZOOM to do workoutstogether and are holding each otheraccountable for staying healthy and strongduring the national response to COVID-19. Redrum, Riveters’ coach and all-star blocker, reports that she has been running with herdog, Kona, to stay in shape and has beenmaking and selling macramé wall hangings.Brotato chip has been making and sellinghandmade dreamcatchers to nurture hermental health and Deja Blue, who just openedup Bluebird Tattoo studio in the Hanoversquare, has been painting and selling custompet portraits. Some other league members arestill working during the pandemic. MapleMayhem is a prison guard and reports thatprotocol has been tough and tiring. Byo Hazardis a quality assurance supervisor for a foodproduction plant and has been followingsanitization protocol closely while on the job. We are so proud of our league members thatare considered essential personnel and are onthe frontlines during this pandemic. Someother members of our league have mentionedthat they are playing trivia via zoom to staysocial and keeping up with house renovationsand projects to stay busy and productive. Weare currently unsure of when we will be able tostart practicing again but the silver-lining isthat we learned a new appreciation for ourindividual freedoms and opportunity to skatehere at the YWCA, and we are motivated morethan ever to get back on the track, skate fast, hit hard, and train for upcoming bouts. Find uson Facebook at Black Rose Rollers to staytuned for upcoming bouts in 2020.

YWCA Hanover, in partnership withTrue North, has been implementing aprogram designed to provide a safespace for LGBTQ+ youth over the pastyear and are continuing this programfor the foreseeable future. YWCAHanover staff and True Northcounselors and therapists provide ameeting space at the YWCA Hanovercommunity room for individuals 14-21 who identify as LGBTQ+ and wouldlike a safe place to be themselves ormeet other individuals who identifywith this community. Qmmunity meetings are held on thefirst Tuesday of each month. Thesemeetings serve a variety of purposes, ranging from educational topics, guest speakers, fun crafts and games,or a place to talk to others or ventabout issues in personal life or thecommunity. Recently, the owner of Hope Salon,Bryan Asper, came to talk at one ofthe monthly meetings. He discussedthe struggles during his childhoodand early adulthood of growing up as a gay male and how

this affected him. Bryan is now ahappy father and owns his own hairsalon in Hanover, something that heattributes to the lessons he learned inlife and all of the barriers heovercame to be where he is today.

In addition to the monthly meeting, there are plans in place to have anevent every quarter, each event beingdifferent, in the hopes more LGBTQ+youth will join us and participate.Another exciting development for theQmmunity group is the ability towork with Bryan Asper and otherleaders in the community to bring abig PRIDE event to Hanover eachyear. YWCA Hanover and facilitators fromTrue North are looking forward toassisting Bryan and others in thecreation of such an event in Hanover;it is long overdue.

2019 Donors

This year marks 100 years of service to our community.  YWCA Hanoverhas endured many historical moments in a century, from 1920-2020. Youcan just image as you think of these historic movements and events thatshaped the YWCA mission and drove the services we provided and stillprovide. Movements and events that included World Wars, Women’sSuffrage Movement, The Great Depression, Civil Rights Movement,Women’s Rights Movement, and now a worldwide health pandemic…COVID-19 virus. The impact of the COVID virus has been far reaching not only in terms ofphysical health but also economic health.  Many people, families, business’s, and service agencies are struggling.  Yet the need for YWCAservices never ceases.  Unfortunately, domestic violence continues andeven worsens duringstressful times like these.  Childcare services are still necessary tosupport those who are essential to our economy. Those who must workneed help keeping their children safe and nurtured. We will be asking our community to support the 2020 Century AnnualGiving Campaign just as we have been since it’s inception in 2015.

More than ever, we need your support to ensure our lifesaving, criticalservices will always be available to anyone needing them.  Of course, your support is vital and key tothe provision of mission driven programsthat touch the lives of marginalized groups and meet our mission ofEliminating Racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Thank you for always being there for us just as we are committed toalways being here for you.  Your support of this once in a lifetimeanniversary is profoundly appreciated.
