Equations

An equation is an algebraic expression with an equals sign in it.

To solve an equation, we must treat each side of the equals like a balance. What you do to one side, you must do to the other.

Always think opposite operations!!

Equations

Examples: Solve the following

(a) x + 15 = 34 (b) 4g = 24 (c) 7 - x = -4

Equations

Solve the following:

(i) x + 4 = 11

(ii) x - 5 = 16

(iii) 2x = 8

(iv) 3x = -48

(v) 7 - x = -2

(vi) 14 + x = 37

(vii) 2x = -14

(viii) 0.5x = 6

(ix) x - 5 = 98

(x) 2x + x = 18

(xi) 3x - 2x + 4 = 22

(xii) -2= x + 7

(xiii) 36 = 6x

(xiv) x2 = 49

Daily Practice 8.10.2015Q1. State the mean, median, mode and range of the following

2, -2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 2 , 10,

Q2. Multiply out and simplify 7(x - 4) + 2(3x + 3)

Q3. State the size of the angle a0

Q4. Given a = -3 and b = 4, what is the value of 4a2b?

Equations with brackets

To solve equations with brackets, first multiply out and simplify where possible, then solve as normal.

Examples: Solve the following

(a) 3(2x + 1) = 21 (ii) 7h + 2(h - 5) = 26 (iii) 2(h + 4) - (h + 6) = 7

means less than or equal to

means greater than or equal to

Inequalities

Write expressions for the following:

x is less than 6

y is greater than -15

k is greater than or equal to 0

h is greater than or equal to -4 and is less than 7

p is greater than -1 and is less than or equal to 4

j lies between -3 and 5 but isn't -3 or 5

Solving Inequalities

Examples: Solve the following

(a) 5x > 25 (b) a - 1 < 12 (c) 3x + 15 ≥ 27
