CALL FOR APPLICATIONS - CHARLIE PERKINS SCHOLARSHIP TRUST Following the success of the November 2011 trip to the UK, the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust and the Aurora Project are delighted to announce the opening of the application period for another exciting opportunity to participate in an overseas visit to Cambridge and Oxford universities in the UK in October this year. The visit may also include Harvard and New York University in the US. We are seeking applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university undergraduates (including those in their honours year) who have completed at least one year of their course of study and have the potential to become Charlie Perkins Scholars in the future – see here for more details on the Charlie Perkins Scholarships to Oxford and Cambridge. The trip is also open to university graduates who wish to undertake further study. The successful applicants will be chosen primarily on the basis of academic achievement (Distinction average or higher), but also on the basis of their potential to become leaders in their field of study and in their communities. Preference will be given to students in their final years of study. To be considered, applicants should email the following documents to [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 1 August 2012: • a cover letter • a curriculum vitae • an official transcript of university results

(including mid-year results if available) • confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait

Islander descent through a signed written statement (including common seal) of an Aboriginal Heritage Association, Aboriginal Corporation or Land Council in the community where they live or have lived

• details for two academic referees (email and telephone numbers).

THOUGHTFUL FOODS Thoughtful Foods is a volunteer-run cooperative, making accessible ethically produced whole foods and household products to the UNSW community and beyond. Our members and volunteers include students and staff from many faculties. Boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as amazing breads are available to order for pick up on Thursdays. Pop in for a 50c cup of any of our teas - we have the largest selection on campus! We are located behind the Roundhouse towards the gym - turn right before the Roundabout and look for the sign! CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE CHINA STUDY TOUR, 2012 From Sydney to Shanghai: Advance Chinese Business Study Tour (mid-semester break) August 30 – September 11, 2012 This unique tour is for students interested in the Business world of China. Students will need Advanced level Mandarin to take advantage of the company visits to such places as Bao Steel and the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and language classes held with lecturers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This is an intensive 11-day program with opportunities to hone your business and professional Chinese proficiency, visit Shanghai companies, travel on an over-night field trip to Nanjing, and exposure to ancient traditions of Chinese society and culture. Application deadline: Friday, 3 August, 2012 (end of Week 3) For more information visit our website: www.ConfuciusInstitute.unsw.edu.au MOCK TRIAL MAGISTRATES ASSISTANT The New South Wales Law Society administers an annual Mock Trial Competition among high schools. Details can be found at here. Robert Nixon, solicitor, one of the NSW Law Society's Volunteer Mock Magistrates, seeks the volunteer assistance of what amounts to a volunteer Mock Magistrate's Associates to assist him in performing the role of Mock Magistrate. The successful applicants for this role will share equally with Robert, the performance of all aspects of his role as Mock Magistrate thereby gaining valuable experience in the process. The duties of the Mock Magistrate are described at page 11 of the Mock Trial Manual 2012, found here. This and the manual generally should be studied

carefully before enquiring further. Robert covers schools selected from the following Sydney metropolitan areas: Eastern suburbs, North Metropolitan, Inner Western, Northern Beaches, Sydney CBD, Southern, North Western, South West, and western suburbs. Mock trials are held on weekdays (excluding school holidays) between 5p.m. and 9 p.m. at scheduled high schools. Applicants should 1. have participated in previous mock trials when in high school; 2. be law students at any stage in their studies, other knowledge or experience is not required; 3. have a current driver's licence and access to a car when required; 4. have excellent fluency and comprehension in oral and written English; 4. be able to work under pressure; 5. be an extravert and problem solver who is always comfortable dealing with total strangers; 6. have a landline phone at home for after-hours access. VOLUNTEER COURT ASSISTANTS SOUGHT: DOWNING CENTRE LOCAL COURT COMPLEX Operating out of rooms in the Downing Centre Court Complex 143-147 Liverpool Street, Sydney, Robert Nixon, solicitor, provides free legal assistance to those he has the resources to help. Mr Nixon needs volunteer assistants to help him provide this service in exchange for which law students, at any stage in their studies, can gain invaluable experience in hands on delivery of legal services of a litigious criminal and civil nature.


To be eligible for consideration in gaining his rare but valuable work experience, candidates must 1. have excellent fluency and comprehension in oral and written English; 2. be able to work under pressure; 3. be an extravert and problem solver who is always comfortable dealing with total strangers; 4. have access to a land line phone at home; and 5. be available to attend the office between 8:00 am and 6.30 pm on the first Friday of each month & whenever there is a fifth Friday in any month. Personal qualities of empathy, initiative and critical thinking are more important than prior legal knowledge. The opportunity is not PLT compliant. Successful applicants will work in groups of eight students selected from a roster to work under Robert's personal supervision to: 1. explain the nature of the service that can be offered; 2. interview and record potential client's preliminary instructions; 3. liaise with court staff, police prosecutors and Roads and Maritime Services representatives; 4. record particulars of conferences involving Mr Nixon and the client; and 5. assist generally in the preparation and presentation of the client's case both at the initial hearing and at any adjournment.
