Broad General Education

The 3-18 curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the attributes, knowledge and skills they will need to flourish in life, learning and work, and to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

All secondary schools deliver a Broad General Education from first to third year, and a Senior Phase, fourth to sixth year, where exam certification will take place.

Students at Thurso High School pupils from first to third year, experience a range of different courses and subjects within the eight curricular areas of the Curriculum for Excellence. Covering all of these Curricular Areas ensures that learning takes place across a broad range of contexts.

In the course of pre-school to S3 pupils progress through the Curriculum for Excellence levels from Early, through Levels 1, 2, 3,to 4. In S3, the majority of pupils should be working within 3rd and 4th Level Outcomes and Experiences, although some may be working at levels below or above this.

S3 Learning Choices

At the end of S2 Thurso High School pupils are given some choice over the courses they wish to study in S3, allowing them a timetable with a degree of personalisation.

Third year is an important part of a pupils’ Broad General Education where many of the courses they choose will provide the prior learning needed to progress into National courses in the Senior Phase and will start to provide specialisation within the curricular areas in preparation for certification in S4. For example, instead of covering a general Science course as in S1 and S2, they can now choose from Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology. Attainment in S3 will decide the National level pupils will work at in S4.

In S3 all pupils will study English, Mathematics and Languages, along with Religious Studies, Physical Education and Personal and Social Education as well as the courses they choose from the set of options

Looking ahead – the Senior Phase

At the end of S3 pupils will move from their Broad General Education to the Senior Phase. At this point they will select six subjects to in-clude English and Mathematics to study at National level in S4.

They also have the opportunity, should they wish, to study from a selection of courses offered through the College Link program.

In S5 pupils will reduce the number of subjects studied to five and will select from Highers and Nationals.

In S6 pupils will study a maximum of five subjects and these can range from National level, through Higher to Advanced Higher.

Assessment

There is no SQA presentation in third year. A range of assessments will take place within each subject throughout the year, and achievements and progress will be recorded and reported, allowing pupils to gain knowledge of where their strengths lie, and at which National lev-el they will best be able to achieve in S4. Preparatory work for certification in National Exams will take place.

What now?

A copy of the S3 Option Form is also available on the website – pupils will receive an additional copy on which to record their choices.

In the following section of this booklet, there are pages giving information about the various courses available to pupils in third year. However, this booklet is only one source of information to help guide pupils’ choices. Further information can be obtained at the S2 Parents’ Evening on Wednesday 15th March 2016, where you will have the opportunity to meet with the subject teachers, careers staff, Pupil Support Teachers and members of the Senior Management Team. Staff will be happy to discuss pupil performance in S2 and make recommendations for future study. Staff from Skills Development Scotland also attend this Parents’ Evening and will be happy to offer advice on subject choices.

In addition to the Parents’ Evening others sources of information include:

Discussion in Personal and Social Education classes;

Access to the careers library;

Information from the Careers Advisory Service;

S2 Subject Reports;

One to one interviews for pupils with Principal Teachers of Pupil Support (PTPS).

There will be time allowed in PSE to discuss these options and to ask any questions. S3 pupils will be given a deadline for completing their Option Form, by which time it must have been signed by parent or carer and checked and signed by the pupil’s Principal Teacher of Pupil Support.

You should be aware that a course will only be run if there are a sufficient number of students wishing to study it and enough staff to teach it. The school reserves the right to cancel courses where the uptake is low. Some courses may also be over subscribed so make sure that options are clearly marked with ticks or stars as described on the Option Form.

If the completed form is not returned by the required date, the pupil may be placed in a course which the school considers appropriate. It may not always be possible to place pupils in their first choice because of staffing and the demand for particular courses.
