February 3rd Following Worship Service

It is a sign of February when Valentines overflow on market shelves and children share the message.

It is a sign of the Church when Christ’s greater-than-our love overflows in the hearts of believers, spilling into the world with acts of kindness and compassion.

The call comes to us : LOVE …like Jesus loves.

This is the call that shapes our mission as a church, the vision that moves us forward to see what God would have us to be and to do in this place.

We are often pressed for time, pressed forward in time, and wanting time out. This year, the whole month of February falls within the season of Epiphany, a time when the Church focuses on telling the story, reaching out to the world with the light of the Gospel. Lent is delayed, giving us time to assess our calling, to learn how to better make known God’s love.

This month’s Saturday Bible Study is an invitation to “Trace God’s Love” …from the time of Abraham and Moses to today. The format is story-telling and exploring what God’s ever-present love might mean for us. One need not be familiar with the bible nor comfortable reading the bible to attend. We meet God through story … bible is story of faith. Invite a friend to come with you.

This month we also share our own stories of knowing and sharing the love of Jesus. Beginning with the January 27th potluck, you will be invited to share and to celebrate the unity we have in Christ …unity that celebrates the many and varied stories that shape each of our paths of faith. The council as it gathers in retreat will share and listen to what God’s love might be calling us to do. Our LEAD team is committed to creating opportunities for this to happen in small groups or in personal conversations of faith in the weeks ahead.

If you were to design a valentine of love for Jesus ….or a valentine of Jesus’ love for others, what would it look like? How would it take shape in your life? How might it become an act of love? Jesus’ love for us is described as “agape love” - a self-giving love that reaches far deeper than other forms of human passion and love. Jesus’ love comes from the heart of God and spreads in ever-widening circles as it works in the hearts of believers and as it inspires and empowers the church. So what would that valentine look like for you?

God says …”I have called you by name; you are mine”

“No one has greater

love than this, -Pastor Sue Lidums to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - Jesus’ LOVE! …………………..”love as I have loved you”

Women’s Small Group Bible Study meets this month at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday the 16th or at 7:30 p.m. on Monday the 11th at the home of Jayne Britzman. Our topic is “Coming to Faith in Jesus.” If you haven’t come before, this would be a good month to begin! -Pastor Sue

Adult Bible Study 10 a.m. Mondays, Feb. 4 & 18We continue our “listening to God” through the stories of the early church in the book of Acts. As LEAD moves into deeper “listening to congregation” stay tuned to God’s calling by gathering with brothers and sisters in faith. It is a good way to begin the week and is proving to be a good time to share our stories and challenges of faith. – Pastor Sue

YOUNG AT HEARTOur Young at Heart group braved the ice storm for our January meeting

and eleven people arrived almost safe and sound. Jayne Britzman slipped on the ice

and fell and therefore had some new lumps! We had a great potluck (as usual). In spite of her fall Jayne entertained us with slides of their trip to Colorado. What a beautiful state to be a tourist and see all the glory of God’s country. Thank you, Jayne, for sharing. Our February meeting will be on February 20th at NOON. Pastor Sue and Nancy will be inviting you into some familiar games, hymns, and conversation. We will have a soup luncheon, so sign up for soup, crackers or a dessert, and pray for NO ice! –Nancy Gunnell

Reminder -

“Lord, as we celebrate theSuper Bowl football game,

help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.”

Souper Bowl of Caring uses the energy around our nation’s biggest sporting event to mobilize youth to fight hunger and poverty. Youth develop a stronger connection to their communities as they raise money for charities that provide shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. Help our youth tackle

hunger on Sunday, Feb. 3rd, by making a donation to the Souper Bowl of Caring.
