5Sa Hayden Blackburn Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Wheatland’s fourth and fifth grade concert, Old Time Rock and Roll. We hope there are a few familiar tunes for your enjoyment.

5Sa Landon Light We are going on a journey through popular American music history beginning with Tin Pan Alley in the 1900s and continuing through rock music in the 1980s. As part of our school tradition, please stand for the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

Star Spangled BannerAll Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleamingWhose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fightO’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streamingAnd the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in airGave proof through the night that our flag was still thereO say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

Tin Pan Alley (1900s-1920s)5Sa Hudson Smith American popular music has a rich, diverse history which we will explore this evening.

5Sa Owen Allman We begin at the turn of the 20th century with the commercial expansion of American song through a growing publishing industry in New York’s Tin Pan Alley.

5Sa Ben Feimer “In the Good Old Summertime” was first published in 1902 and was one of the big hits of the era through the sale of sheet music and being recorded by various artists of

the day including John Phillip Sousa’s band.

5Sa Jorja Schwanke The invention of the radio marked another major opportunity for the music industry to expand and reach out to larger and more diverse audiences. The worsening

economy of the late 1920s, inspired songwriters to write music which would have a positive effect on Americans who had fallen on hard times.

5Sa Paige Coggeshall One such song was “When You’re Smiling” made famous by Louis (pronounced Louie) Armstrong who recorded it at least three times.

5Sa Sequoia Grantham Some contemporary uses of the song include the popular television programs, Seinfeld and Glee as well as the video game, Mafia 2.

Early Musical and Movie Music (1930s) 5Sa Rachel Greenfield Musicals and movies provided the next opportunity for composers of American popular

music to expand their audience.

5Sa Miley Middleton “Singing in the Rain” is one of the most-loved and celebrated film musicals of all time. Unlike most later movie musicals, this was made directly for tv and was not a Broadway adaptation.

5Sa Isaac Genereux “On the Sunny Side of the Street” was introduced in the Broadway musical Lew Leslie’s International Revue and remains popular today as a jazz standard.

5Sa Braden Larson It has been recorded by such famous artists as Louis (pronounced Louie) Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, The Manhattan Transfer, Nat King Cole, and

Frank Sinatra.

5Sa Thomas Parker “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” was written by the dynamic songwriting duo of brothers, George and Ira Gershwin for the 1937 film Shall We Dance starring Fred Astaire

and Ginger Rogers as part of a celebrated dance duet on roller skates.

5Sa Jack Schuster It is most famous for its lyrics which compare different regional dialects and more specifically identifies class differences.

4F Sean Mansoor At the time, typical American pronunciations were considered less “refined” by the upper-class which specifically emphasized the broader “ah” sound is words such as

“darling”. (dah-ling)

4F Wyatt Wilscam Notable recordings of “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” have been created by such artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Fred Astaire, and Brian Wilson (of the Beach

Boys).

4F Tony Carbajal It was a popular source of aircraft nicknames during World War II.

4F Cadence Lopez Tuxedo Junction was made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has been covered by solo artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Frankie Avalon.

Early Rock (1950s)4W Ady Wimbley The 50s brought about a radical departure from the swing music of the 30s and 40s.

4W Blair Wiltshire The new music rejected the sound, rhythm, instruments and singing style of swing.

4W Walker McClellan The smaller, amplified rock ‘n’ roll bands of the 50s were much more economic to travel with.

4W George Matthews The music itself offered a diversion and relief from the tension and apprehension from dealing with World War II.

4W Chloe Gantz The relentless beat, simple harmonies, very basic and often ungrammatical texts, and the brash high spirits of the music celebrated youth and good times.

5B Peyton Gantz Bobby Darin launched his singing career in 1958 with the number 1 hit single, “Splish, Splash.” It was released in April and by June had sold a million copies.

5B Erin Palyash Although certainly not one of the most cerebral works of the time, its quirkiness caught on. Darin had several more hit records in his fifteen year career.

5B Grant Hatzenbuehler In 1957, rock ‘n’ roll music was not well received throughout all corners of America.

5B Roc Tenpenny In January 1958, a St. Louis radio station banned all rock ‘n’ roll music from its playlist with the station manager calling it a simple weeding out of undesirable music.

5B Isaac Phelps Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Here to Stay was written in response to the ban and became a rock ‘n’ roll anthem.

Surfers, Tie Dye, & Bluegrass5Sp Maverick Hurt In the early 1960s, three brothers and a few friends liked to sing songs in harmony at

family get-togethers and were even good enough to play at local high school dances in Los Angeles.

5Sp Luke James What sets this group apart from others was subject matter of their songs—songs about the southern California lifestyle and surfing in particular.

5Sp Tucker Travis Blending elements of jazz, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll, the group exploded on the popular music scene as the originators of what was called the California Sound.

5Sp Derin Asmatulu Surfin’ USA became The Beach Boys’ first big hit in the U.S. and is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.

5Sp Tate Hutchinson The 60s also saw a great folk music revival with the Civil Rights Movement and the controversial Viet Nam war. Young people studied and sang the old songs with

enthusiasm and adding modern touches.

5Sp Skylar Trible Blowin’ in the Wind poses a series of questions about peace, war, and freedom. The answer, my friend, has two primary interpretations.

5Sp Lisa Gall The first being the answer is so obvious it is right in your face.

5Sp Sara Qaddour The second is that it is as intangible as the wind.

5Sp Sunny Yu In 1999, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2004 it was ranked #14 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

5Sp Brady Turriff Blowin’ in the Wind has been recorded by hundreds of artists including Peter, Paul and Mary; Dolly Parton, Duke Ellington, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley, and Stevie

Wonder.

5H Eli Adams What the World Needs Now is another social commentary that became a surprise hit in the summer of 1965.

5H Will Baker It, too, was recorded many time by the likes of The Supremes, Barry Manilow, Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross, and even crossed over into the country charts in the

late 1970s.

5H Drew Kemp Following the shooting of Robert Kennedy in June of 1968, but before he died, the Jackie DeShannon version was played over and over on Los Angeles radio stations as an audio

vigil.

5H Chase Haberichter Rocky Top is an American country and bluegrass song written in 1967 and recorded by the Osborne Brothers. It is a city-dweller’s lamentation over the loss of a simpler

Progressive Rock (1970s)5H Gabrielle Walker Kansas was a progressive rock band of the 70s comprised of six young men and based

in our own state capitol, Topeka, Kansas.

5H Natalie Brotherton One of the musicians, Kerry Livgren, had been practicing with his acoustic guitar, working on a chord progression he had written as a finger exercise.

5H Norah Ewy His wife heard it and thought it was a nice melody and told him he should write lyrics for it and the result was the hit, Dust In the Wind.

5H Brodie Christensen It’s slow melody and philosophical lyrics set it apart from other hits from Kansas.

5H Ella Friederich Dust in the Wind was Kansas’ only top ten Billboard Hot 100 charting singles and was on VH1s 40 Greatest Softsational Soft Rock Songs of All Time.

5H Sarah Hopper “Come Sail Away” was a song recorded in 1977 by another American progressive rock group, Styx.

4G Ivan Cheng It combines a plaintive, ballad-like opening section with a bombastic, guitar-heavy second half.

4G Barrett Loftin The song became the regular closing track during the band’s live set before the encore, and Styx member Dennis DeYoung now closes nearly all of his live concert

performances with a rendition.
