Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.People: And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. AmenCelebrant and PeopleAlmighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. 1 Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers;you are worthy of praise; glory to you.

2 Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name;we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

3 Glory to you in the splendor of your temple;on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.

4 Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim;we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

5 Glory to you, beholding the depths;in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.

6 Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

The Collect of the Day BCP 235The Celebrant says to the people: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.(The people may be seated.)A Reading From Leviticus (19:1-2,15-18)The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of

3

your neighbor: I am the LORD.You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.(Silence for reflection upon the reading.)

Psalm 1 BCP 585

ANTIPHON1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the

wicked, nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

2 Their delight is in the law of the LORD,and they meditate on his law day and night.

3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not

4

(choir and congregation, verses of the Psalm sung

wither;everything they do shall prosper.

ANTIPHON4 It is not so with the wicked;

they are like chaff which the wind blows away.5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when

judgment comes, nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed.

ANTIPHONA Reading from 1 Thessalonians (2:1-8)You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.Hymn to Announce the Gospel Where cross the crowded ways of life Hymnal 609The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ According to Matthew (22:34-46)

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,“Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Dena WhalenThe Nicene Creed

BCP 358We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he

6

suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People (Form III) BCP 387Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Rob, our bishop; Dena, our rector; Kay, our deacon; Richard, our priest associate; St. Andrew’s on the Sound, Wilmington, the Rev. Richard Elliott, rector, the Rev. Sarah Smith, curate; Iglesia Cristiana; and for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for Donald our president, Roy our governor, and all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth.Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. We pray for those on our parish prayer list: Ed, Joanne, Karen, Curtis, Dot, Bob, Audrey, Jere, Eleanor, Barbara, Barb, Bob, Pat and those friends of the Parish listed in the bulletin; have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress.

7

Give to the departed eternal rest;Let light perpetual shine upon them.We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.SilenceThe Celebrant adds a concluding Collect.Confession of Sin and Absolution BCP 360 (The people stand or kneel)Celebrant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole hearts; We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace

All are welcome to receive Holy Communion at the altar. For the bread, place one hand over the other and hold them up chest high so the minister can easily place the bread on the palm of your hand. You may then consume the bread or hold it to dip (intinct) into the wine and then place it in your mouth. If you wish to receive the chalice, please guide it to your lips. If you do not wish to receive the wine, indicate by crossing your arms. After you have received the bread and the wine, it is appropriate to say “AMEN.” Gluten free communion bread is available. Ask the priest.
