MThis late January I will on a Road Scholar Trip to Sarasota, Florida for 6 days and seethree plays. The first one is "The Sister Act", the second the 'Originalist”, and thethird "The Great Society". As an added highlight we will go to the "Ringling Museum."In addition we will meet and learned from pros such as playwrights, actors, directors,designers, costumers, tech staff and other experts. I look forward to getting awayfrom the cold weather here, possible snow storms and icy streets. I hope all of youhad a chance to go on a Road Scholar Trip and enjoy the warmer weather of Florida.All you need is the desire to go and the money to pay for it. ~ Lois Ross

IN MEMORIAMMichael Orzechowwski, passed away on Thursday, January 12 athis home. Michael was a long time member of Community Church,serving in so many ways – including Caring Network, Action forJustice, Stewardship Campaigns, Right Relations work and mostrecently on the Board of Trustees. Michael was always cheerful, caring and thoughtful; always welcoming to other members and visitors alike. He will be greatly missed!

Odella Washington, a Community member of 55 years, passed away on Monday, January 23. She was radiant in her warmth, hospitality,and abiding care for our Members, as Chair of our Caring Network formany years. Entering Fellowship Hour, all were greeted with her smileand good cheer at the Welcome Table. We shall celebrate her life onSunday, February 19 at 1 pm with a Memorial Service followed by areception.

Growing Our English

A t Community Church we are involved in 'growing oursouls.' We do that in many ways with our services and ourprograms. This past year when I was volunteer teaching

ESL at the International Center in New York City, I learned thatthe classroom for my structured class would no longer be avail-able due to other services needed. Both students and I were verydisappointed. For me, I had been with the Int. Center for over 20years. One of the members asked me if perhaps my church hadsome area where they could continue to grow their English. Iapproached Esther, and in very short order we were give use of theLounge at #28 to continue our sessions.

This generous offer has affected not only the growing of English,but also involved in 'acculturation' to the USA as we share more

than the study of a new language that they will need either toremain here or to move on wherever they plan to live. We havetouched each others' culture, the foods, the holidays, the strug-gles, the family relationships.

Every Tuesday, morning, we meet for two hours and follow it withlunch in the Lounge. Each one tends to bring a traditional dishand my joy has been to taste Russian salad, Korean specialties, aChinese noodle dish with some of the best conversations, and lotsof laughter

Please know that these 'guests' from Ukraine, Colombia, Korea,Italy with new ones from Israel, Brazil and Pakistan all feel grate-ful to Community Church of NY and, in many languages we say'thank you' or 'gracias' or 'spasiba,' 'merci,' 'danke schoen' andknow that the members and I are thankful for the space you havegiven.

On Friday, February 3 at 6 pm, in the Hall of Worship, theMetropolitan Synagogue will hold a special interfaith ShabbatService together with Community Church, celebrating the releaseof a new CD: "Harmonize Your Spirit With My Calm." The servicesand CD feature music and performances by High Holidays MusicDirector Dr. Leonard Lehrman and Church Member Prof. JoelMandelbaum, together with soprano Helene Williams (the featuredsoloist on the CD) and High Holidays Cantor Michael Niemann.Rabbi Joshua Plaut will preside. On Sunday, March 12 at 3 pm, in the Assembly Hall, TheMetropolitan Philharmonic Chorus, (MPC) in association with The Bronx Opera, will perform the Manhattan premiere of THE TRIANGLE FIRE, a new opera with music by Leonard Lehrman &libretto by Ellen Frankel, conducted by the composer. Members ofthe Solidarity Singers of the New Jersey Industrial Union Councilwill join the MPC for a medley of labor songs preceding the opera.Cantor Michael Niemann will be performing one of the lead roles,

the factory co-owner Max Blanck. The libretto centers on the trialof the owners, which ended in acquittal, but resulted in wide-spread protest that led, Eleanor Roosevelt and Frances Perkinssaid 50 years later, to the New Deal reforms and regulations whichare still being fought for all over the world today.

Rabbi Arthur Waskow, attending the New Jersey premiere lastSeptember, wrote:

When I saw/heard “The Triangle Fire” opera, I could feel four dif-ferent yarmulkes settle onto my head (not that any of the sufferingheroines of the Triangle fire wore any): having two grandparentswhose lives were entwined in unionism and the garment industry;being an historian, with a special interest in US labor history;being a rabbi, with a strong interest in the spiritual wisdombehind the ancient, ever-renewed Jewish passion for social justice;being a life-long political activist, burning to use illuminationfrom the past to change the future. This opera fulfilled all thehopes encoded in my four yarmulkes. — Rabbi Arthur Waskow,director of The Shalom Center and author (wth Rabbi PhyllisBerman) of Freedom Journeys: Tales of Exodus and Wildernessacross MiIlennia

Expect to see a great variety of subjects rendered in a full rangeof artistic media. Of special interest is the visionary culture workof one of our guests, Jeremy Leggend, (photo below) whose art isinspired by geometry, the cosmos and nature, mixed with certainaspects of graffiti.

There will be two opportunities to see the art and meet all of theartists: at a formal artists’ reception on February 18th and at aclosing event on March 18. BJ's Place Needs VolunteersOur shelter, Helene’s and BJ's Place, provides ten men with a warm and safeplace to sleep – and a welcoming atmos-phere. Volunteers are always needed andtraining is provided. The shelter operates365 days per year and volunteers are askedto be available 1 night every 6-8 weeks (7 pm to 7 am). Can you offer a night?

AARP OfferingEvery Thursday from February 2 through April 13, AARP volunteers, who are certified by the IRS, will be available to do your tax returns, free. Yes, there isno cost and no income limit. We prepare taxes usingcomputers and must file all returns electronically.AARP Tax-Aide is the largest free tax assistance andpreparation service in the United States. EachThursday, hours will be 10 am to 2 pm. We will taketaxpayers on a first come, first served basis. As thereis a limit of how many returns we can do in one day,we may not be able to take you if we already have themaximum number of taxpayers we can assist. In thatcase, we may ask you to come the following week orsuggest you visit another one of our sites inManhattan or the Bronx. So come early and bringeverything that is pertinent.
