The Scope of Practice of an Audiologist Hearingandbalancedisorderscanbeassessed,treated,and(re)habilitatedbyanaudiologist.Audiologistsarehealthcareprofessionalswhoprovidepatient-centeredcareintheprevention,identification,diagnosis,andevidence-basedtreatmentofhearing,balance,andotherauditorydisordersforindividualsofallages.Hearingandbalancedisordersarecomplexwithmedical,psychological,physical,social,educational,andemploymentimplications.Treatmentservicesrequireaudiologiststohaveknowledgeofexistingandemergingtechnologies,aswellasinterpersonalskillstocounselandguidepatientsandtheirfamilymembersthroughthe(re)habilitativeprocess.Audiologistsprovideprofessionalandpersonalizedservicestominimizethenegativeimpactofthesedisorders,leadingtoimprovedoutcomesandqualityoflife.Audiologistsarelicensedand/orregulatedinall50states,theDistrictofColumbiaandPuertoRico. EmploymentSettingsforAudiologists [1,2] Audiologistsmayworkinawidevarietyofsettings,includinghospitals,clinics,privatepractices,ENToffices,universities,K-12schools,government,military,andVeterans’Administration(VA)hospitals.HealthCareThemajorityofaudiologistsareemployedinhealthcaresettingslikehospitalsandphysicians’offices,wheretheyservedifferentpopulationsandtheirresponsibilitiescanvarywidely.Audiologistsinhealthcaresettingsmayberesponsibleforperforminghearingassessments,prescribingandfittinghearingaids,assistingincochlearimplantprograms,performingear-orhearing-relatedsurgicalmonitoring,and/ordesigningandimplementinghearingconservationprogramsandnewbornhearingscreeningprograms.Theymayalsoparticipateasmembersofbalancetreatmentteamstorecommendandcarryouttreatmentandrehabilitationofimpairmentsofvestibularfunction.Audiologistsworkanywherefromsmallprivatepracticestolargeresearchhospitals,andeverywhereinbetween!Percentageofaudiologistsworkinginvarioushealthcaresettings:

EducationSomeaudiologistsworkineducationalsettingslikeK-12schools,aswellasuniversities.Theaudiologistisanintegralpartoftheteamwithintheschoolsystemthatmanagesstudentswithhearingimpairmentsandstudentswithcentralauditoryprocessingdisorders.TheaudiologistparticipatesinthedevelopmentofIndividualFamilyServicePlans(IFSPs)andIndividualizedEducationalPrograms(IEPs),servesasaconsultantinmatterspertainingtoclassroomacoustics,assistivelisteningsystems,hearingaids,communication,andpsycho-socialeffectsofhearingloss,andmaintainsbothclassroomassistivesystemsaswellasstudents'personalhearingaids.Theaudiologistadministershearingscreeningprogramsinschools,andtrainsandsupervisesnon-audiologistsperforminghearingscreeningintheeducationalsetting.Audiologistsinuniversitiesmayprovideclinicalandacademictrainingtostudentsinaudiology,aswellasteachphysicians,medicalstudents,residents,andfellowsabouttheauditoryandvestibularsystem.University-employedaudiologistsmayalsoconductresearchandserveinadministrativeroles.

WhattoLookforinanAuD/PhDProgram[4] ThegeneralapplicationrequirementsdescribedaboveforAuDandPhDprogramsarealsoapplicableforadualdegree.TherearethreeenrollmentmodelsfortheAuD/PhDprograms:sequential,simultaneous,anddual-track.Thesequentialmodelhasstudentscompleteonedegreebeforemovingontotheotherdegree.Simultaneousstudyinvolvescompletingcourseworkforbothdegreesatthesametime,allowingforsomeoverlapofcoursework.Thedual-degreeprogramsadmitstudentswiththeintentionofcompletingbothdegreeswhileingraduateschool.[3]TherecanbesomeflexibilityofenrollmentmodelsbetweenPhDstudentswithinthesamegraduateschool.

WhattoLookforinaPhDProgram[5]

DoctorateofPhilosophy(PhD)degreesinaudiologyorhearingscienceareavailableatmanyuniversitiesintheUnitedStates.Thelengthoftheprogramcanrangefromfour-tosix-years.SomeprogramsofferajointAuD/PhDprogramand,onaverage,consistsofasix-yeartimecommitment.TherearemanyitemstoconsiderwhenpursuingaPhDprogram:A.Getinvolvedwithresearchasanundergraduate.Youcouldconsiderstartingacapstone/research

projectorvolunteeringinaresearchlaboratory.ThiswillhelpyougaininsightintowhataPhDprogrammightentail.

B.Yourmentorisakeypieceinthesuccessofyourresearch.Youwillspendthemajorityofyourtimeworkingtogetherwithyourmentor,soitisessentialtohavecompatibility.Mentorsoftenalignyourresearchinterestswiththeirown–whichisimportanttokeepinmindwhenresearchingvariousprograms.Itisidealtovisittheschooltomeetwithfacultyandcurrentstudentsbeforeacceptinganoffer.

C.Knowyourgeneralareaofresearchinterest.MostprogramswillhavetheirPhDstudentsdeclareupto5areasofinterest.Lookuptheresearchfacultyandtheirdeclaredareasofresearch.Itwouldbeidealtofindaprogramthathaswell-roundedopportunities.

What is Accreditation and Why is it Important? Accreditationistheprocessbywhichanentity(inthiscase,aprogram/school)ismeetingallformalrequirementsofacademicexcellence,curriculum,facilities,etc.Therearetwoaccreditingbodiesassociatedwithaudiologyprograms.Thepurposeofaccreditationistomaintaineducationalandclinicalstandardsacrossallprograms.

WhatistheACAE?[6] ThepurposeoftheAccreditationCommissionforAudiologyEducation(ACAE)istorecognize,reinforce,andpromotehighqualityperformanceinAuDeducationalprogramsthrougharigorousverificationprocess.ThisprocesswillproduceevidencethatAuDprogramshavepreparedgraduateswhoarequalifiedtobedoctoral-levelaudiologists.Italsowillassurecommunitiesofinterestthatgraduateswillbeabletofunctionaccordingtothenationalscopeofpractice,asdefinedbytheprofessionalorganization.

WhatistheCAA?[7] TheCouncilonAcademicAccreditationinAudiologyandSpeech-LanguagePathology(CAA)wasestablishedbytheAmericanSpeech-Language-HearingAssociation(ASHA).Theintentionofaccreditationistopromoteexcellenceineducationalpreparationwhileassuringthepublicthatgraduatesofaccreditedprogramsareeducatedinacoresetofknowledgeandskillsrequiredtoqualifyforstateandnationalcredentialsforindependentprofessionalpractice.

WhyisAccreditationImportant?[8]Mostgraduatestudentsfocusontherequirementstheaccreditingbodysetsforgraduation,suchasclinicalskilldevelopment,howtoobtainclinicalhours,research/capstoneprojects,andrequirementsforexternships.Additionally,graduationfromanaccreditedprogramisneededtoobtainstatelicensure.Whenconsideringprograms,itisimportanttobeawareoftheaccreditingbody,iftheyarecurrentlyaccredited,andwhentheaccreditationisupforrenewal.Thecompetencyoftheprofessionisdependentonprogramstandards.“Studentsplayapivotalroleinensuringthatthequalityofgraduateaudiologyprogramsiscommensuratewiththeneedsofpracticingaudiologistsandtheirpatients”(Joshi,2016).Withtheultimategoalofbecomingindependentpracticingaudiologists,studentsshouldexpecthighstandardsforgraduateeducation.

Application Essays Someprogramswillusetheterm“coverletter”or“letterofinterest”foryourapplicationessay.Acoverletterusuallyincludesinformationabouthow/whyyouarequalifiedforthepositionyouareapplyingfor,andyourspecificinterestintheorganization.Similartoacoverletter,aletterofinterestisasnapshotofyourinterestinagraduateprogramandcontainsadescriptionofwhyyoushouldbeconsideredforaninterview.Coverlettersandlettersofinterestshouldaccompanyaresumeandotherrequireddocumentation.Mostprogramswillaskforapersonalstatement.Thisshouldbeaone-totwo-pagedocumentinwhichyoutalkaboutyourself,yourclinicalinterests,thereason(s)youwanttobeanaudiologist,andwhyyouareinterestedinaparticulargraduateprogram.Thisisyourchancetoshine!SampleEssayPrompts:

Graduate Record Examination (GRE®) [9] TheGraduateRecordExamination(GRE®)isastandardizedtestthatistakenbymanystudentsinterestedinpostgraduatecoursesintheUnitedStates.EducationalTestingServices(ETS)willsendyourscorestowhicheverschool(s)yourequest.Youareallowedtosenduptofourreportsforfree,howeveryoumustknowthenameoftheschoolsandthespecificdepartmentalcodewherescoresshouldbesentatthetimeofyourtestinordertosendthesereportsthroughtheETSsystem.Thereisafeeforadditionaltestscorestobesent.TheGRE®hastwoexaminations:TheGeneralTest&TheSubjectTest.TheGRE®revisedGeneralTestconsiststhreemainportions:AnalyticalWriting,VerbalReasoning,andQuantitativeReasoning.Itisofferedasacomputer-basedtestandtakesabout3hoursand45minutestocomplete.
