We are honored to welcome you to our special 1st anniversary edition of Sabaidee Magazine. It has been an exciting year for the magazine

that has helped bring the experience and beauty of Laos directly to our readers. We believe that the road ahead is always open for us to step forward and share our great experiences and useful information during our journeys for our readers. We would like to thank all of our readers who have been following us, as well as our sponsors who encourage us to keep traveling until today.

For our 1st anniversary commemorative edition, we have pulled out all the stops to provide you with 99 Ways to Explore Laos. If you ever needed any reason to visit Laos, or were looking for all the information in one place, this is exactly what we have done for you in this edition.

Alongside the 99 Ways, we have also brought to you in this edition articles about the Zip-line adventure in Luang Prabang, the sumptuous fare at Don Chan Palace, and an interesting guest interview with Bounkham Chaloenphon, on his opinions of the preservation of Luang Prabang.

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your support during 2012, and look forward to a prosperous 2013 for yourselves and the evolution of Sabaidee Magazine.

Have a great 2013

Vatthana Siamkha, born in Luang Prabang, loves to learn new things, especially about new technology. He has been interested in photography since he was 21, when his father brought both film and digital compact cameras home after work. He was so curious to know how to use the camera that he asked his permission to play with the cameras. He very much enjoyed taking photos of friends and family.

Taking photos fills him with happiness and he sees photography as the way to keep good memories of life. He also enjoys looking back at his photos to improve his photographic skills. He likes taking photos of nature, landscapes, macros and portraits. His works present his promising potential with hopes to be a famous professional photographer in the future.

Check out the stunning photo exhibition from photographer Vathanna Siamkha at Project Space in Luang Prabang from now until 15th February 2013.

Tham Jang, in Vang Vieng, is a large cavern that was used in defense against marauding Chinese Ho (Jiin Haw) in the early 19th century (tham means cave, jang is steadfast.) A set of stairs leads up to the main cavern entrance.

Although the Nam Song River in Vang Vieng is hardly the Ganges – which is a good thing because it’s less crowded and not so dirty – bathing in the Nam Song river has become a bit of an iconic thing to do when visiting Laos. Every evening, you will see many locals bathing in the Nam Song River.

If you are travelling across Southeast Asia alone, Laos is the perfect place to meet like-minded travelers. Vang Vieng is the ideal spot to befriend other travelers.

It is believed that the kingdom of Lan Xang was fi rst established in 1353 by King Fa Ngum, which is apparently a conservative date. By the time of late 14th century, early speakers of the Laos Language started to develop. The borders of the modern state of Laos were established by the French colonial government in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The mighty Mekong River is legendary, and worth the plane ticket to Laos on its own. As the World’s 12th largest river, and stretching through several countries such as Laos, Thailand, China, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar, the daily lives of millions of Laotian people depend on this aquatic beast.

Flying Experience through Mother Nature’s Garden

Since the zip-line adventure was introduced in Lao years ago, it has become more and more popular among tourists who enjoy adventure activities. Owned and operated by Korakod Thitawigran Khanongnuch, who is a business lady from Thailand, Nature Flight was first established

in 2009 and is the only zip-line package tour in Luang Prabang that provides tourists with three main programs including half-day zip-line and Tad Sae Waterfall, full-day zip-line and elephant riding with lunch, and full-day zip-line and trekking.

Korakod said that since she first opened the zip-line almost 4 years ago, it was less known by the locals, but today she has a lot of Chinese customers who come to Luang Prabang via self drive holidays in China and expects to get more tourists coming to her site when the railway from China begins.

Korakod also reveals that she is going to invest in the construction of a boutique hotel of about 10 rooms at the waterfall by the beginning of 2013 and concentrate on the Thai market, selling tailor-made programs or 3day/2night packages.

Tad Sae Waterfall is the hidden gem of Luang Prabang consisting of cascades and crystal clear pools ideal for swimming and relaxing. The zip-line that runs through the jungle and over the fall will offer breathtaking views of the area and provide you with an experience you will never forget. VISION TOWARDS HIS WORLD HERITAGE HOMETOWN

BOUNKHAMCHALEUNPHOL

Luang Prabang native, Bounkham Chaleunphol, is a young architect and entrepreneur who has seen his hometown before and after UNESCO took interest in the city. He thinks that Luang Prabang is already well-prepared in terms of architectural conservation, yet it needs to chip in with more personality that reflects through in its local people’s way of life and some cultural activities that should have more focus.

54

Page 55: Sabaidee Lifestyle & Travel Magazine issue 7

Since he was born, Bounkham, aka Khoa, has been raised in town until he fi nished school and was sent to France for high school. He returned to Laos in 1994 to study building architecture in a university

in Vientiane and worked as a lecturer after his graduation. Bounkham returned to his hometown in 2002 and established his architecture company in 2004 and was hired by UNESCO.

“My role was to connect UNESCO and local people trying to get them to understand what conservation is. Of course UNESCO have lots of regulations and laws to be followed when the area is protected as a World Heritage Site, so I had to simplify them for villagers to allow them to easily understand and to be aware of the value of their old buildings and the proper way to conserve them and make them last long for the future to benefi t,” says Bounkham.

For the past year, Bounkham has noticed that his hometown, Luang Prabang, has changed a lot. He could remember the small town before the fl ux of tourists. It was a very serene place with a simple way of living but with obviously strong culture and traditions. But after the year 2000 when tourism began to boom, the daily lives of local people’s and their culture has been effected by the outsiders. Some of the old tradition has been mixed with other cultures.

“Personally, I admit that work on the architectural conservation is very good, possibly better than some other world-heritage sites. What I am concerned about is that architectural preservation alone is not enough. It should be done along with culture and ways of living, because everything is important to each other, “says the young business owner.

“If we compare Luang Prabang to humans, I think the body or physical appearance looks nice but lack good apparels and a suitable personality. So, I hope that the government will issue stronger policies on the conservation of this city” he adds.

In 2007 Bounkham opened a construction company to serve the investors during the boom of 5-star and boutique accommodations in Luang Prabang, and 2 years after, he built his own “Kiridara” hotel according to his architectural concept using all local materials to be harmonized with nature - simple but functional. The hotel is situated on a hillside providing fantastic views overlooking the world-heritage town. Besides the main property, Bounkham also built several villas by the rivers, and in the community, managed under his Kiridara brand.
