Incident 1

Where (Property) • Lisbon

Date • 6 Dec 17

Type • Crossing & tracks (3)

Incident description

• Exit point was found where suspects dug underneath the

fence.

• During the back tracking, an entry point was found where

the suspects crossed from the KNP over the Sabie river

onto the Lion Sands property.

• Group was confused with their point of exit from the KNP,

as they thought they were more to the West towards

Belfast/Cork.

Incident 2

Where (Property) • Alicecot

Date • 11 Dec 17

Type • Shots (2) reported

Incident description

• NRS patrol reported shots

• No poaching activities were found with the follow-up, it is

suspected that shots were fired outside SSW in the

community

• No poaching activity found during the follow-up.

Incident 3

Where (Property) • Alicecot

Date • 15 Dec 17

Type • Fence cut & Crossing (attempted)

Incident description

• The fence was found cut and then again closed and fixed.

• No tracks were found at the scene

• It could not be determined if it was an old cut.

Incident 4

Where (Property) • Exeter

Date • 20 Dec 17

Type • Crossing & tracks (3)

Incident description

• Exit point was found, entry point unknown.

• During the back tracking the tracks were lost close to the

46 cutline – boundary between Othawa and Exeter.

• The group that entered SSW stayed between the fence

line and the fire break.

• During the exit the group climbed over the fence after the

fence electrical strands were shorted out. This gives an

indication that the group was familiar with the fence alarm

operations. Possible indication is that an ex-field ranger is

involved.

The graph above show year on year increase since 2011 for rhino poached (green line).

The average trend (11%) (red line) of the past six (6) years shows that we should have

lost 7 rhinos for 2017.

Lessons learnt during 2017

• Speed of infiltrations.

• Counter-tracking is being used more by suspected poachers during their

incursions and great care is taken by suspected poachers to enter SSW and when

crossing roads/cutline in order not to leave any tracks or markings behind.

• Use of help on the outside has become the norm during incursions.

• It is also seen that suspected poachers do detail reconnaissance before

attempting to enter SSW.

Predictions

• Incursions into the Western Sector and the Castleton / Dudley / Shaws areas can

increase due to the high number of rhino in the areas. Incursions will be quick

same day/night in and out. On the Southern boundaries in the Lisbon area

increased activities could also be expected.

• The Northern boundary and the Buffelshoek property still stays an area of great

concern. Incursions into Manyeleti and Kingfischerspruit has idecreased during the

past month. Incursions into the Northern parts of Tshokwane are starting to

Page 12: SABI SAND WILDTUIN MONTHLY SECURITY REPORT SABI SAND ... · Sabi Sand Wildtuin – Lodge Searches – Dec 17 Sector Property Comments Northern Sector Arathusa Safari, Hoffmans, Wessels,

increase where the poachers will make use of the Buffelshoek/Gowrie to exit the

area due to the tall lights that are visible for many kilometres, this is then being

used for navigation. Incursions into Tshokwane from Mozambique has also picked

up during the past months.

• Actions in the Southern part of the KNP has increased. Suspected poachers can

make use of the areas bordering the KNP in South as they go through areas to

exit the KNP.

Risks

Fences

• With the increased caution that suspected poachers are taking to

enter, new and innovative changes must be made on the fence to

make it more difficult to cross. Internal upgrades are underway.

Changes to the fence line in Alicecot has been completed and the

work teams are moving to areas on the Northern boundary of SSW.

• Erosion on the fence line remains a problem. Most of the erosion is

on the outside (community side).

• The fence at the Protea Hotel will be upgraded. This will be done

once changes have been made to the current fence.

Gates

• Sniffer dogs at the gates are working well. Shaws gate still is a

problem due to the fact that we cannot accommodate the dogs at

the gate. Messures are being put in place to have sniffer dogs on a

more regular basis at Shaws.

• The whole gate process are being looked at, to simplify the

processes and speed up the entries.

General

• With access into SSW becoming more difficult, suspected poachers

will be making use of staff members working on SSW to assist them

obtaining information on rhino locations as well as Ranger

movements. We can expect that internal involvement will increase

in the coming months.

• Blackmailing of Rangers and staff can also take place in exchange

for information and assistance.
