very experienced chefs. A thank you to the St. Vincent de

Parish Yard Sale
One of the outcomes of the Parish Coun-
cil meeting last Monday evening was the
idea of a Parish yard sale. It was decided
that a major fund raising yard sale for the
Parish would take
place on the 18th of August this year.
Yes, folks, August is going to be
VERY interesting this year!
We will be accepting any items
that can be sold for the benefit of the
ongoing work here at Holy Name.
I am the living bread
that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread
will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh
for the life of the world.

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2018
20th Anniversary Celebration Save the Date: On September 9, 2018 the Holy
Name of Jesus Gospel Choir will be celebrating
its 20th anniversary. This joyous event will take
place at 3:00 PM at Church. Our own African
Catholic Community Choir and the Saint Am-
brose Schola Cantorum will be joining us. We have also invit-
ed several choirs from churches in the community to join in
the festivities; Beneficent Congregational Church, Bethel
AME, and Olney Street Baptist. A free will offering will be
taken. Refreshments will be served on the church grounds af-
ter the
pro-
gram.
A Wonderful Saturday
The inservice day for the Altarboys was very positive. Over 20
of our boys and young men were present. The day began with the
praying of the Rosary and a short talk by Mr. Berardo. A refresh-
er was done for the group followed by items specific to the newer
members. Hotdogs and Hamburgers were demolished quickly at
the lunch. This was followed by the older members doing some
silver polishing and the younger ones polishing the pews in the
Church. After the 4:00 PM Mass over 40 people attended the
Pawsox game. God blessed us with great weather for the game
and the Pawsox won! A good time was had by all.

Parish Council Meeting
August has begun and we need to
receive the different brochures that
each organization was asked to put
together outlining the work they do
and giving contact information.
Without this the neighborhood out-
reach is going to be delayed.
The African Women's Guild, St Vincent de Paul,
Una Voce, Young Menz Group, Young Friends of Fatima,
HNJ Youth Group, African Catholic Community Choir,
Society of St Tarcisius, Scholar Club, and Bereavement
Ministry, the ACCRI, Legion of Mary, Knights of Colum-
bus, Schola Cantorum, Gospel Choir, CCD, and the Prayer
Network and also the African Men’s
Guild and the Church Decorators
need to get a brochure or at the
veryleast a description of their minis-
try. A suggestion was made that the
Ushers, Church Cleaners and Noctur-
nal Adoration form themselves into
more cohesive groups that can re-
ceive other members more easily. Brochures from each
organization need to be submitted by the 26th of August!!
“The Lord waits for us to respond day by day to his holy counsels by our actions. In fact the days of this life are given us as a respite to correct our errors, as the Apostle Paul says: ‘Do you not know that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?’ (Romans i..4). And in his loving-kindness the Lord says, ‘Have I any pleasure in the death of
world and nurture and teach him, and the focus of much of the
New Testament is primarily the life of Jesus and the apostolic
ministry which followed his resurrection.
Why is she not mentioned much? It's not that surpris-
ing, because Mary was alive when most of the New Testament
was being written, and her humble nature may well have led her
to shun the limelight. Her role was to bring the Messiah into the
world and nurture and teach him, and the focus of much of the
New Testament is primarily the life of Jesus and the apostolic
ministry which followed his resurrection.
What happened to her after Pentecost? Mary the
mother of Jesus was given into John's care (John 19:26-27), and
John was a "pillar" of the Church in Jerusalem for some time (Gal
2:9), before living in Ephesus
until his exile to Patmos.
Wedding Anniversary
Celebration 2018
This is the LAST
CHANCE to sign up for
the annual Wedding Anni-
versary Celebration honor-
ing couples of the Diocese
of Providence who will be observing their 25th, 40th, 50th
and OVER 50 years wedding anniversaries in 2018.
Some important points regarding participation
in the celebration
• The celebration is for couples observing their 25th,
40th, 50th and OVER wedding anniversary in 2018.
• One or both of the spouses need to be Catholic, with the
marriage recognized by the Church.
• The celebration is for couples; if it is not possible for
both to be present, a certificate can be forwarded direct-
ly to the couple.
• Reservations are made by use of the registration form
available from Fr. Joseph.
• Please note: the registration form must be submitted
through your parish and signed by the Pastor.
It will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018,
1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Provi-
dence. It will include Mass, renewal of marriage vows, a
personalized certificate for each couple and a reception for
the couples and their families. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin
will be the main celebrant and homilist.
In order for the
attendees to have their
names and anniversary
published in the Mass
booklet, we must re-
ceive all registration
forms by August 17.
Vacation Bibles School Well, it almost didn’t happen! There were 3 children and 2 vol-
unteers. Then, on Monday there were 15 children a volunteer
couple and, throughout the week several youth volunteers to help
maneuver the children during the 5 mornings of the week. The
response of the children was fantastic and the parents and volun-
teers were very understanding. In fact, a good time was had by
all.
Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The 15th is a Holy Day of Obligation: The Solemnity of
the Assumption. Masses at Holy Name will be 7:30 AM
followed by Adoration during the Day. At 4:30 PM there
will be Confessions followed by Benediction at 5:15 PM
and the second Mass of the day at 5:30 PM. There will be a
sung Latin Mass at 7:00 PM. New Altar Boys as members
of the St. Tarcisius Society will be invested at the Masses. The miraculous assumption of Mary into heaven is, for
many people, one of the more difficult Catholic doctrines to ac-
cept, in part because it does not seem to appear explicitly in
Scripture, and also because the dogmatic definition of the doc-
trine did not happen until quite recently (1950, in fact, although
the belief itself is ancient). This article is intended to provide an
outline of the reasons why Catholics believe in this wonderful
event. The article is based upon some notes I put together for a
presentation on the Assumption, hence its question-and-answer
format in parts.
The Assumption: Definition "Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all
stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was fin-
ished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalt-
ed by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the
more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror
of sin and death. [LG 59; cf. Pius XII, Munificentissimus Deus
(1950): DS 3903; cf. Rev 19:16.]
"The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation
in her Son's Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection
of other Christians:
"In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you
did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the
source of Life. You conceived the living God and, by your pray-
ers, will deliver our souls from death." [Byzantine Liturgy, Tro-
parion, Feast of the Dormition, August 15th.]"
- (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #966).
Did Mary Die? It's an open question in Catholic theol-
ogy (note how carefully the definition is phrased); but most theo-
logians think she did, hence the ancient title of the feast of the
Assumption, the "Feast of the Dormition", i.e., Mary's "falling
asleep" in death).
Is the Assumption in Scripture? Ludwig Ott, author of
the excellent book Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma candidly
says, "Direct and express scriptural proofs are not to be had." But
there is plenty of indirect evidence, which we'll explore.
What about John 3:13, "No one has ascended into
heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man"? The name "Assumption" is important, and one should be careful
not to mix expressions here; in Catholic terminology, the
"Assumption" is something that God did to Mary in bringing her
into heaven, over which she had no control, while "Ascension" is
what Jesus, being divine, did under his own power.
When is the last time Mary is directly mentioned in
Scripture? See Acts 1:14, and Gal 4:4.
Catechism: Reminder: All children of the parish who have not received the Sacra-
ment of Confirmation must be registered with the Office of Religious Educa
tion—regardless of whether they attend public school, private school, Catholic
school or are homeschooled.

Featured Video: Mary of Nazareth
Mary of Nazareth is an epic motion picture on the
life of Mary, Mother of Christ, from her childhood through
the Resurrection of Jesus. Shot in high definition, it was
filmed in Europe with outstanding cinematography, a
strong cast, and a majestic music score. Actress Alissa Jung
gives a beautiful, compelling, and inspiring portrayal of
Mary.
The film vividly captures the essence of Mary’s
profound faith and trust in God amidst the great mysteries
that she lived with as the Mother of the Messiah, as well as
her compassionate humanity and concern for others, and the
deep love that she and Jesus shared for one another. The
movie underscores her special role in God’s plan for our
redemption, her unique relationship with Christ, and the
tremendous suffering that she endured in union with his
Passion and Death, as well as her serene joy at his Resur-
rection.

Something to think about…
A parishioner who en-
joys going with a group of
friends to various church bazaars
during the Advent season recent-
ly mentioned that one church in
particular makes it a point to
have members of their congrega-
tion at the door to greet the pa-
trons individually as they en-
tered the hall. She remarked that
it felt very natural and nice to receive such a welcome and
that, on more than one occasion, she overheard people say-
ing that they would like to attend such a church.
A smile and a word of greeting can make all the
difference.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ But how can they call on him
in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe
in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear
without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent?”
