A Message from the Pastor

August 28, 2016

Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

This weekend we welcome Fr. Kevin Dance from the The Passionist Mission in Vietnam.

Passionists learn to stand by the Cross of Jesus with his mother. They came to Vietnam in 2005 because they recognize the crucifixion of Vietnam, the heroic suffering of the people, and are drawn to stand with them. The cross overcomes suffering, and lifts people up in their daily struggle. The Passionist community numbers four foreign priests, eight theology students, five novices, five philoso-phy students and 25 college students. Many ask us how can missionaries survive in a Communist society? We remember that Jesus lived in a dangerous political environment where he encouraged all to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. So we preach the gospel without hesitation, make friends with everyone, stay away from politics. You would be surprised what good we find in unexpected places, just as Jesus did. We are building! Or, to be honest, we hope to build. We have exhausted our funds, generously donated from four continents, just buying a very small piece of land suitable for a seminary. We must double our student accommodation to avoid turning away the generous young men who are knocking on the door, wanting to dedicate their lives to God’s service. Since our foundation from Rome in 2005 we have been in a hurry. Four missionaries from four nations are working with eight young Vietnamese religious, who are soon to be ordained, to advance our Congregation’s mission of uplifting the poor by the power of God’s love revealed in Jesus’ journey to the Cross. We need to reach the people in greatest need of the gospel, and that means training and ordaining local missionaries, leading them in service to the poor. Last May one Bishop begged me to train the young men quickly and send them out. “The people are waiting for them,” he said. Yes, there is a hunger for the good News and for social development. We missionaries live a simple life. Public ministry is forbidden, and we can’t show our identity as priests in public. Yet, we have found ways to keep very busy behind closed doors, forming the church of the future. The wonder is that we are able to continue. On our street they call our little rented house, “the house where they make priests”. Through the Mission Cooperative Plan we can tell our story to the wonderful people in your parish who have shown great generosity even in tough times. Their solidarity will bring joy and life to Vietnam!

Bereavement Ministry Fall Session Begins in September

“We are told that time will heal the grief, but it is in taking the time to grieve that we are healed.”

The Bereavement Ministry offers support to anyone who has recently experienced the loss of a loved one. The trained and compassionate facilitators from St. Luke’s, Guardian Angel Church and Church of the Presentation will navigate you through the grief process with discussions about loneliness, anger, guilt, family dynamics, and inner healing. You are invited to attend eight sessions presented over the course of eight weeks. This is a safe, confidential place to find support and understanding from those who have experienced a similar loss. Registration is required and there is no fee. For registration, information, and one-on-one support until the group begins, call 201-327-1313 ext. 872 and someone will call you back.

YOUTH MINISTRY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Attention 9th Grade Confirmation Candidates!

The Guardian Angel Confirmation Program runs from September to May of your 9th Grade year. This is a time when the Confirmation candidates are asked to take ownership of the faith their parents have instilled in them. The program challenges the young people to learn more about what they believe and to come to know Jesus on a more personal level. It is also an invitation to become more active members of Parish Life and think about serving in various ministries of the parish.

The fall weekend retreat begins the Confirmation

Program. It takes place from Friday evening, September 16th through Sunday afternoon,

September 18th. This retreat is intended to build community and invite all the candidates to be active participants in the Confirmation preparations. The retreat is held at the Marian Shrine – Don Bosco Retreat Center in Stony Point, New York. It is planned and led by a group of Peer Ministers and adult volunteers. Attendance of this retreat is mandatory. A candidate who cannot make the full retreat, or misses because of illness or family/school commitment must attend another retreat approved by the Church of the Guardian Angel’s Office of Youth Ministry. The retreat will close with Mass on the retreat center premises. Parents are to attend this Mass; retreatants are dismissed to the care of their parents following the Mass. There will be a MANDATORY parent meeting to detail the September retreat on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:30pm in the Barn.

Fall session Confirmation classes begin Tuesday, October 4th at 7:30pm in the Rectory.

Contact the Religious Ed office at [email protected] and I will meet you at the office for registration. Tuesday classes will begin on October 4th. The complete grade 1- 8 Religious Education class schedule may be found on the parish website: go to www.guardianangelchurch.org. Check it out!

If you have registered, please check your e mail for all of the information that you need. If you have registered for Home School classes, you may pick up your materials by appointment. The Religious Education office will be closed until September 12th but I will be checking my email and will be happy to arrange a meeting. Summer is a great time to think about activities that your family might want to get involved in at Guardian Angel for next year. If you are interested or have any questions call Mr. Donahue at (201) 962-2119 or e-mail him at [email protected]. STEWARDSHIP BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

August 28, 2016 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you." LUKE 14:13 -14 We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return.Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.
