Sam Jose, October 9th. —JnngQnan Sing, a Chinese cook in the employ of J. JI. M. Townsend, was arrested this "afternoon by Sherifl Branham as the perpetrator of the brutal murder of Henry Vandervoiet, at the letter's saloon on the Milpitae road, Wedne day night. Suspicion was directed to the Chinaman this morning by the dis- oovery-Uiat the hatchet had blood marks on it and also that the old handle had been taken out and a willow stick substi- tuted. i':,i Sheriff searched the China- man's room and found a pair of shoes with blood .-[..its over them, and a pistol and pocket knife belonging to the in-ordered man. the Chinaman was placed tin the County Jail. Vandervorst formerly worked at Towasend's, and had a ditliculty with the Chinaman several times. A few days ago the latter inquired of a boy on the place where the old man could beibnnd. This makes the twenty-second indictment for Brorder in the first degree growing out of 'he S<piak affair. Victobu,-October 9th.—The Chinese la- borers from the railway are coming in, and the Chinatown sidewalks are almost im- passable, (me steamer and two sailing ships, on the berth for Hongkong, in the aggregate carry 1,300 passengers. Several thousand will leave within the month. The last spike pi the Canadian Pacific Railway will be drivenin about a fortnight. No unusual ceremony will take place and visitors an- expected to pay their own fares. Superstitions Concerning Spirits. The favorite " heat " of the ghost is usu- ally tkagpot where he died. The last spike pi the Canadian PacificRailway will be drivenin about a fortnight.No unusual ceremony will take place andvisitors an- expected to pay their own fares.
