DON’T FORGET ADVENT!

At this time of year, along with other priests and liturgists, I am tempted to wail and gnash my teeth like the Grinch in protest against the criminal neglect to which the poor sea-son of Advent is subjected. Such a short season (only four weeks!), so beautiful in her themes and hopes, so full of traditions and lessons, and yet so often forgotten. Everyone is in a rush to celebrate Christmas. My friends, the Christmas Season does not begin until the first Vigil Mass on December 24. There will be lots of time to celebrate Christmas. Now is the time to observe Advent. This is not a call to heroically resist the tsunami of parties, cookies, carols, shopping, and decorating that is about to come tumbling down on you. It is a call to not allow yourself to be swept away by it. Go ahead and enjoy the festivities, but in the Lord. I also will in-dulge in a few pre-Christmas celebrations myself. Thus, you will see me in an elf’s cap and cope for the lighting of the tree on State Road and welcoming of Santa Claus next Saturday after Mass. Before December 25 I will toast my friends with eggnog and munch on some homemade chocolate chip cookies (yummy!). But I will not forget Advent! And neither should you. What could be a more meaningful preparation for Christmas than to ponder the preach-ing of the prophets of old who announced hundreds of years in advance the coming of the Messiah? Their message was filled with hopeful expectation. We also have a hopeful ex-pectation, not for the first coming of the Messiah, but for his glorious return. Where might you find the Scriptures that anticipate the first coming and the second coming of the Messi-ah? In the liturgies of Advent! You can easily look up the Scripture readings for Advent at www.usccb.org/bible/readings and click on the various dates. Traditionally, Advent was con-sidered to be a “little Lent,” which is why the seasons share the same liturgical color of violet. Advent does not have the same penitential emphasis as Lent, but it is a time for reflection and conversion, which is why our local parishes will offer Penance Services and extra hours for Confession. What better way can we prepare for Christmas than to open our hearts to the working of the Holy Spirit by a good confession, more frequent participation in Mass, and quiet prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament? So let us savor this time of preparation for the coming of Christ. Let us not forget that Christmas is a Christian festival. Let us all thank the Church for the holiday. Above all, let us celebrate it in a Christian way, by making it first and foremost a celebration of the Birth of the Savior. In this way we will enjoy it more, and the fruit of our celebration will not be head-aches from hangovers and worriment over credit card debt, but the real joy and happiness which is the heart of the season. In her liturgy the Church has given us an excellent way to make sure that our Christmas festivities are truly Christ-centered – it is the way of Advent!

Live the Liturgy Inspiration for the Week

Stay awake! With so many things competing for our

attention and so many details to attend to, it is very

easy to fall into a slumber. We can find ourselves

simply going through the motions of life and losing a

sense of purpose and direction. Busy with many

things, we lose touch with the things of God,

especially the gentle stirrings of His presence. Advent

calls us to the challenge of living a wakeful life.

Awake from the sleep that life’s demands can put on

us, and allow God’s word to transform our hearts.

Being ready for the coming of the Lord is life’s

priority for the Christian. Let us walk in the light of

the Lord!

The 2020 Parish Appeal is off to a great start. In the first three weeks we have pledges for more than $52,800 with $29,341 in hand. The Appeal is supporting continuing operations of the Parish. The first $150,000 will go to balance the parish budget; the remainder will go toward the emer-gency fund for unbudgeted, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate replacement of the church roof. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Fa-ther Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. If you wish, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of enve-lopes to make your donation.

The estimated income for our 2020 fiscal year budget has been adjusted to reflect recent historical income numbers. Our income goal is $722,000 for the Offertory collection. Our aver-age weekly income is above the goal Keep up the good work. Some parish-ioners have increased their donation. If you are able, please consider join-ing them. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is approaching 18 years old. As in your home, mainte-nance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. You have demon-strated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be generous.

CANNED FOOD DRIVE

Christmas Day will soon be here, a time to celebrate and count our blessings with friends and family. Beyond the laughter, the presents, there is a silence for so many of our community. Laughter stilled by poverty and hunger, silenced by emptiness and loss of hope. Poverty haunts

hundreds of our neighbors every day, even during the holidays when life feels so festive and secure. Hunger knows no season.

Thank you to all the generous people who have made this program a success for so many years. Without your time, donations and sup-port, our campaign would never have been able to service the over 390 families that were cared for in 2018. It would be wonderful if we could say that there is not a need to run the program this year, but the reality is that we still have many families that need help.

Due to this greater number of families and a lesser amount of dona-tions, we have decided to ask our generous parishioners to assist with this part of the program again this year. Last year’s response to our needs was met with TREMENDOUS support!!! We will have a collection box in the vestibule from November 23/24 through the weekend of December 7/8. We would appreciate donations of canned vegetables, canned meats/tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, bagged rice, pasta and stuffing. Please contact John Brennan at 610-869-4100 or [email protected] if you have questions about the program.

Do you have a will or estate plan?

According to a recent poll, 57% of adult Americans do not have a will or estate plan. Are you too busy to make a will or estate plan? Do you have more important things to do? Having these plans may be more im-portant than you think. All estates are subject to review by state probate courts and if there is no will the court assigns the executor, beneficiaries and guardians (to care for minor children and disabled dependents). Im-portant decisions such as who will inherit your property, who will pay off outstanding bills, and who will raise your children are in the hands of the court if there is no will.

Making a will is often inexpensive and easy. Take care of your family and help ensure that your intentions are carried out; make sure you have a will and that it is current. Also, please consider including ABVM parish in your will, estate planning or insurance policy as a legacy gift. We recom-mend you talk with an estate planning attorney. Contact Gene Fogarty, Development Council President, at [email protected] or call (610) 742-5289 for information.

Parents, protect your children! To help you we have invited the

Chester County Crime Victims Center to visit us on Wednes-

day, December 11th at 6:30 p.m. They will provide guidance

on how to help your children avoid “Online Abuse.” You will

receive practical advice so you can speak with confidence to

your children and teenagers about how to avoid the harms of

inappropriate pictures, of creating an unfavorable digital history,

and of cyberbullying. They will also help you to recognize

grooming and predatory behavior, and what to do if this is encountered. This need-to-know infor-

mation is for parents, grandparents and anyone responsible for the care and education of minors.

The event is for adults only and is free of charge. It will take place in the ABVM Parish Life Cen-

ter on the lower level of the church building.
