Eucharistic Adoration
Stewardship Corner ~
This holiday weekend, we celebrate both being Catholic and being American. These two descriptors for many of us define the way in which we live - openly practicing faith, readily defending our freedoms afforded to us through the founding documents of our country, and exercising everything the two of them (faith and freedom) allow us to meld together.
To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary. That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our founding and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together. (USCCB)
Having all of these freedoms also gives us a great deal of responsibility. This responsibility lies in how we use the gifts of our faith and of our citizenship. The USCCB defines religious liberty as the following:
In Catholic teaching, the Second Vatican Council explained in Dignitatis Humanae that the foundation of the principle of religious freedom is rooted in the dignity of the human person, who is endowed with reason and free will, and therefore able to take responsibility of his or her actions.
Let us all strive to protect these freedoms and fight for the dignity of the human person as both our faith
and our Constitution tell us to!
Peace,
Kaitlyn Wiant
