Why Corner

Is Heaven your priceless treasure? Jesus said in Luke 12:34, “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Is heaven your priceless pearl or treasure? Is heaven your ultimate goal in life? Are you doing everything humanly possible and with all your might to get to heaven? Have you given any time today in your thoughts about heaven? In today’s Gospel, Jesus used the images of hidden treasure and/or finest pearl to illus-trate what heaven is like. In the ancient world pearls had a very spe-cial place in people’s hearts and lives. People desired to possess a lovely pearl, not only for its money value, but for its beauty. They found a pleasure in simply handling it and contemplating it. They found an aesthetic joy simply in possessing and looking at a pearl. So, what is Jesus suggesting or pointing out here? What is Jesus tell-ing us about hidden treasure and/or finest pearl? Is heaven your treas-ure and/or your pearl? First, are you searching for heaven, the loveliest thing for you in your life? The first lesson of this parable is that the person found the precious thing, not so much by chance, as in their day’s work. It is true to say that they stumbled unexpectedly upon it, but did so when they were going about their daily business. It is legitimate to infer that they must have been going about their daily business with diligence and efficiency, digging deep, not merely scraping the sur-face, in order to strike against the treasure and/or accidently finding the finest pearl. It would be a sad thing if it were only in churches, in so-called holy places and on so-called religious occasions, that we found God and felt close to Him. There is an unwritten saying of Je-sus’ which never found its way into any of the Gospels, but which rings true: “Raise the stone and thou shall find me; cleave the wood and I am there.” When the mason is working on the stone and when the carpenter with the wood, Jesus Christ is there. True happiness, true satisfaction, the sense of God, the presence of Christ are all to be found in the day’s work, when the day’s work is honestly and consci-entiously done. Brother Lawrence, a great saint and mystic, spent much of his working life in the monastery kitchen amidst the dirty dishes, and he could say, “I felt Jesus Christ as close to me in the kitchen as ever I did at the Blessed Sacrament.” Second, is heaven the loveliest thing for you in the world? And is everything that is important in your life focused to this loveli-est thing? To the ancient people, as we have just heard, a pearl was the loveliest of all possessions. That means that the Kingdom of God, Heaven, is the loveliest thing in the world. Let us remember what the Kingdom is. When we say the Lord’s prayer, we find that we could say that the Kingdom of Heaven is a state of society upon earth where God’s will is as perfectly done as it is in heaven. Therefore, to enter the Kingdom is to accept and do God’s will. That is to say, to do the will of God is no grim, grey, agonizing thing; it is a lovely thing. Be-yond (continued on next page)

Why Corner (continued) the discipline, beyond the sacrifice, beyond the self-denial, beyond the cross, there lies the supreme loveliness which is no-where else. There is only one way to bring peace to the heart, joy to the mind, beauty to the life, and that is to accept and do the will of God. Are you living our God’s will in your thoughts, actions, attitudes and words? Third, is heaven the only lovely thing for you in the world? It is suggestive to find that there are other treasures and/or pearls but only one treasure and/or pearl of great price. That is to say, there are many fine things in this world and many things in which a person can find loveliness. A person can find loveliness in knowledge and in the reaches of the human mind, in art, music and literature, and all the triumphs of the human spirit. A person can find loveliness in serving his neighbors even if that service springs from humanitarian rather than from purely Christian motives. A person can find loveliness in human rela-tionships. These are all lovely, but they are all lesser loveliness. The supreme beauty lies in the acceptance of the will of God. This is not to belittle the other things. They too are hidden treasures and/or pearls but the supreme treasure and/or pearl is the willing obedience which makes us friends of God. Fourth, what are you willing to do for found hidden treasure and/or the discovery of the finest pearl? Are you willing to give everything for it? So, then, it is worth anything to do God’s will. Suddenly, as awe discover the treasure and/or pearl, there may flash upon us, in some moment of illumination, the conviction of what God’s will is for us. To accept it may be to give up certain goals and ambitions which are very dear to us, to abandon certain habits and ways of life, and self-denial which are by no means easy. In a word, to take up our cross and follow Jesus. No matter whether the discovery was the result of a mo-ment or the result of a life-time search, the reaction was the same – everything had to be sold and sacrificed to gain the pre-cious thing. But there is no other way to peace of mind and heart in this life and to glory in the life to come. It is indeed worth giving up everything to accept and do the will of God. Is your heart in heaven? A former parishioner is now working at the Women’s Prison in Reidsville and would like to start a “Fashionista Closet” for the ladies so they will not have to go into the world with their prison garb when they are released. If you have some gently used jewelry, handbags and clothes that you were go-ing to dispose of, why not donate them for the Fashionista Closet? They will also accept unused make-up and nail polish. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Bring these items by the office and we will see that they get delivered.
