Mass Intentions for 2019 The tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. Inscriptions discovered on tombs in Roman catacombs of the second century evidence this practice: for example, the epitaph on the tomb of Abercius (d. 180), Bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia, begs for prayers for the repose of his soul. In the Words of Our Saints: St. Ambrose (d. 397) preached, “We have loved them during life; let us not abandon them in death, until we have conducted them by our prayers into the house of the Lord.” St. Augustine (d. 430) recorded the dying wishes of his mother, St. Monica in his Confessions: “One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be.” Pope St. Gregory (d. 604) said, “Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.” Some things to keep in mind when scheduling a Mass for a loved one at Sacred Heart: ~ Mass Intention requests will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis in the order in which the Mass
Intention Request is received in the Parish Office.
~ $20 for the weekend Masses and $10 for the week day Masses is a suggested stipend for each Mass intention
requested and should accompany the Mass request.
The First Friday Memorial Mass Intentions will be a $50 suggested stipend for the entire year, (12 Masses). However, no one will be denied a Mass Intention because of inability to pay. ~ Individual Mass Intentions will not be scheduled on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Easter Vigil and Easter Masses, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Masses as they are for the intentions of the Living and Deceased Members of the Parish.
