SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTION

The opening lines of today’s first reading describes the early experiences of the very first generation of Christians. They are worth meditating upon for Christians of all times: “(1) They devoted themselves to the teaching of the Apostles and (2)to the communal life, (3)to the breaking of bread (eucharist) (4) and to the prayers.” As the reading continues, it reflects the early Christian thinking that the second/final return of Christ would be very soon. Today’s second reading, the 1st letter of St. Peter, was probably written two or three generations later when it had become evident that the second coming would not be as soon as first expected – sic, our situation. This letter cautions: ”for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith…may prove to be for praise , glory and honor …of Jesus Christ.” This too is worthy of reflection as we find ourselves in 2020 as a result of the Coronavirus, needing to teach and remind ourselves of “ the teaching of the Apostles”, isolated from the Christian community, and ostensibly denied reception of the Eucharist. We, clearly are being asked to suffer through a trial, not knowing whether it will be for a little while or for an extended period. During this trial, while we long for a return of the first three experiences of the believers in Acts, we still have unlimited access to the fourth: prayer. Oramus pro invicem. Let us pray for one another.

PRAYER FOR MERCY O God, The shelter of the poor, the strength of the exhausted, and the comforter of the grieving, we entrust to your mercy the unfortunate and needy wherever they may be. You alone know how long and how much they have suffered. Look down, Father of mercies, at those unhappy families suffering from war and vio-lence from hunger and disease, and other cruel trials. Spare them O Lord, for it is truly a time for mercy. St Peter Canisius

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (Divine Mercy Sunday) APRIL 19, 2020

SCHOOL NEWS Several of our current and upcoming fundraisers will need to be adjusted in response to the closure of school. The March Madness Raffle drum will remain safely locked within the school office until the students have returned and we will resume pulling our daily winners at that time.

The Annual Auction of May 9th, our largest fundraiser of the year, has been postponed due to the CDC’s eight week hold on venues of hosting more than 50 people. We are currently working on the possibility of acquiring a date in June. We are also exploring other options that would allow us to make the gifts that we have received available for the general public.

REGISTRATION FOR 2020-2021 When school re-opens our registration for the 2020-2021 school year will continue for UPK 4 year old, Early Childhood 3-4 year old and grades K-6. We know that you will be amazed at all of the wonderful things that are happening here in your school!

Our Altar Bread and Wine for the month of April has been gifted in memory of Doris Carey by Husband, Ed and Daughter, Kathleen.

A few things to remember … and

practice.

St. Jon Paul the Great once said, “Do

not abandon yourself to despair. We

are an Easter People and Halleluiah

is our song.”

Remember this …

Asking for prayer isn’t about putting

burdens on friends. It’s about

letting them walk with us down a

path we were never intended to walk

alone.

Prayer is the most powerful weapon

against trials. The most effective

medicine against sickness. And the

most valuable gift to someone you

love.

When you pray for others, God listens

to you and blesses them. So when

you are safe and happy, remember

that someone has prayed for you.

Mother Theresa said “Prayer is not

asking. Prayer is putting ones self in

the hands of God, at His disposition,

and listening to His voice in the

depths of our heart.”
