Do you know someone who has left the Church?
Most of us do not have to look very far to find non-practicing Catholics in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned about these loved ones, but we don’t know how to help them. Obvi-ously, most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way home?
As baptized, practicing Catholics, we have a precious gift of faith and love from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and sisters. First we need to pray for them. Next, we need to extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Most non-practicing Catho-lics are waiting for an invitation to return. Many think they are excommunicated and are not welcome for a variety of reasons.
Many non-practicing Catholics carry with them a tremendous amount of guilt and misinformation about the Church and are afraid of approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. You can make a tremendous difference in someone’s life by simply reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them and would like them to come back home to our Church family.
“Catholics Returning Home” is a program to help non-practicing Catholics return to the Church. We will begin a new session on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 7:00pm in the McCann Center. Special Collection for Ebola Victims The Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked that a special collection be taken to assist Catholic Relief Services in helping Ebola victims. That will be taken this weekend, January 10/11.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
Have you ever wondered why Jesus, who was without sin, was baptized? The baptism of Jesus symbolized and antici-pated his death. After Christ’s ascension into heaven, bap-tism was required for all those who became Christians. St. Paul makes the connection between baptism and death for Christians when he maintained that we are buried with Christ in baptism, so that we may rise with him to a new life. In what way will we be good stewards of our new life in Christ in the coming year?

RCIA Sessions Are you or someone you know interested in learning more about our Catholic faith? The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA) program exists to help those adults who are inter-
ested in learning more about or joining the Catholic Church. The RCIA process is a period of reflection, prayer, instruction, discernment, and formation. Ses-sions are held on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the McCann Center. The next session will be on January 6, 2015! If you or someone you know may be inter-ested, and even if Tuesday evenings will not work for you, please contact Joe Fey in the Faith Formation Office for more information.

Infant Baptism Preparation
The first step for parents wishing to have an infant child baptized at Sacred Heart is to attend a Baptism prep session. At the session
parents discuss the responsibility involved in having a child baptized and share ideas on living out their commitment to raise their children in the Catholic faith. The Next Baptism Preparation Session will be on Sunday, January 25th at 5 p.m. in the Gathering Space of the Church. For more information, or to register, please contact Joe Fey, our Director of Life-long Faith Formation in the Faith Formation office.

January 18th and 19th Iowa Institute for Social Action Annual Conference. This year there will be a youth track -free to High School and College age youth. The conference will be in Altoona. The youth track speaker will be Julia Dinsmore. She is a poet, author, spoken-word artist, mother and grandmother who has given presentations for more than 25 years. Most known for her poem “My Name is not ‘Those People’,” she promotes a greater understanding and appreciation for the strengths and resiliencies of people who are margin-alized by poverty or other factors in our society”

better? Why do some churches baptize by pouring water on the forehead and others by immer-
sion? Is one way better than the other? In terms of what bap-tism means and accom-plishes— escape from sin and death into the life of the Risen Jesus — immersion is no better than pouring. But in the dra-matic power of the symbol of the water, immersion is better. The power of the sacrament of baptism lies not in the method of bringing the water into play, but from the direction given to the pouring or the immersion by the words of Jesus, who commanded us to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). St. Paul said, “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life” (Romans 6:3–4). Down into the death of Jesus, and up again into a new life. Even on the level of symbol and drama, a trickle of water is still water. It still means and symbolizes life, as in drinking and cooling. It also symbolizes death, as in a hurri-cane or a drowning. This union of words and water in the Church makes this action the sacrament of baptism.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items I f you are look-ing for a good posi-tive, inspir-ing novel during the long dreary days of Janu-ary, Tobit’s Dog would be an excel-l e n t choice. This is a modern day version of the Old Testament’s book of Tobit. The setting is the deep south when Jim Crow laws were the law. January 11, 2015 The Baptism of the Lord
Is 42:1–4, 6–7 or Is 55:1–11 / Acts 10:34–38 or 1 Jn 5:1–9 /Mk 1:7–11
A lay-minister acquaintance of mine keeps a framed copy of his baptismal certificate on his office wall. He says, “My diplomas show that I’ve learned a lot of things about theology, liturgy, and Scripture. That’s great, but my experience of Christ and my call to ministry come out of my baptism, and I need to remind myself of that every now and then.” I was intrigued by his words. Baptism is the initiation into a community whose sole purpose is to wor-ship and serve the Lord using the gifts God has given us. Most of us were baptized as infants, and we rarely take the time to reflect on what we’re called to do by God. In baptism, we’re given the grace to live a transformed life following the commandments to love God and neighbor. How many times have we fallen short and needed to reconcile with God? Mark’s story of Jesus’ baptism is a scant four verses. Jesus is baptized and hears God tell him, “You are my beloved Son.” After that, Jesus prevails against temptation and sets about his own mission without looking back. Our baptism gives us the grace to do the same, whatever mission we are called to. Two good spiritual exercises for this week would be to ask God whether we’re doing what he has asked
of us and to reflect on the ways in which our lives have brought us closer to God or taken us away from him. Then it’s up to us to continue to serve God in the grace of baptism and in the company of the people who share this faith with us.
