Issue 16, 2017

Thursday 26 October 2017 (Week 2, Term 4) SACRED HEART COLLEGE

From the Principal Dear members of the Sacred Heart College community, Class of 2017 This week formal lessons for the Class of 2017 conclude and a number of our traditional ceremonies to mark this occur. Wednesday evening was the traditional Graduation Mass followed on Thursday by the Graduation Assembly, Year 12 Celebration in Walter Park and the Year 12 Boarders Dinner in the evening. To round off the week we have the Year 12 Parents’ Farewell Drinks on the Friday evening. At the Graduation Mass students focus on their spiritual journey at Sacred Heart. Reference to the significance of the Year 12 Retreat is prominent. Each of the Marist themes from each student’s time at the Senior School are also used as reference points: Just Love - Hearts without Boundaries; Mercy - this is the name of our God and Awaken: Marists 200>. Each carried the touchstone for the year and each was symbolically displayed in the 'quad' throughout the year. The students were also reminded of the Marist characteristics of modesty, humility and simplicity by way of the 'Three Violets'. Our College Captains, Gemma Thomas and Luke Wormald, touched on the many poignant moments of their time at the College and spoke of the importance of Marist family spirit, being mutually supportive of each other and aspiring to achieve personal bests whilst being mindful of the values which are important to us all in the Hearts community. So why do these things? A great deal of time and effort and formality and celebration that formal classes have concluded - because each and every one of our students in the Class of 2017 absolutely matters and matters absolutely! The fiercesome Masai warriors of Kenya have a traditional greeting - 'Kasserian Ingera', which translates to, 'How goes it with our children?' Such is the concern, care and love for their children that their first enquiry in greeting another is to enquire as to the wellbeing of their children.

It would be fair to suggest that the general health and wellbeing of any society's children is a critical indicator as to the overall state of that society. When we consider the talented, generous, capable, hard-working, healthy and cheerful Class of 2017 at Sacred Heart one could respond to the Masai greeting - 'It goes well - in fact, it goes incredibly well!' Of course, we all (including the students) appreciate that our community is built on mutual support and a generosity of spirit which nurtures our young people. Through an amalgam of Christian values, Marist themes, a family spirit, a reflective disposition and the blessings of a fine education at Sacred Heart our students embark on the final leg of their schooling journey imbued with a sense of hope and courage to undertake as best they can what needs to be done until we gather again at the Class of 2017 Graduation Ceremony! We wish them well in their final assessments and examinations! Kind Regards, Steve Byrne Principal

MIDDLE SCHOOL

From the Head of Middle School Welcome to Term 4 and the countdown towards the end of another fine academic year. I would like to use this article with the mindful approach of gratitude and thanks. From my office at the Middle School, I am fortunate to witness the work of our administration team in the front office - with firsthand knowledge I can fully appreciate the work they do in supporting the teaching and learning at Sacred Heart. This focus is sharpened when such events such as Sports Day come around. I think we would all agree that Sports Day this year was one of the best I have been associated with and I am not only thankful to Ash Jenner and the Be Active Committee, but also our admin team who play a crucial role in the organisation and communication required to run such an event. Another fine example of this was at the Year 9 Social on Friday night (photos below). I would like to thank the Year 9 Team, led by Deb King for their wonderful planning, organisation and supervision of the evening. Most staff would have crawled into bed just before midnight, but I am sure all would agree that it was worth it! It was a cracking evening! Our boys looked amazing and their behaviour and the way in which they engaged with the evening was outstanding. They truly are developing into fine young men who are deeply connected to the Marist story - clearly evidenced when the last song of the evening didn't belong to Ed Sheeran or Beyonce, but rather a stirring rendition of "Hearts on Fire". Hopefully you can find the time this week to express your thanks and gratitude to someone who could do with it. Have a great week. Tim Mullin Head of Middle School

Sports Day 2017 Sacred Heart College Middle School’s Sports Day took place on Thursday 19 October at Santos Stadium. 2017 was the first year with the new Houses (Montagne, Chavoin, Marian, Chanel, Fourviere) and it was definitely a successful, fun filled day that was enjoyed by all students. It was also the first time that the Year 6 and 7 students got to experience a Sacred Heart Sports Day at Santos Stadium. With this, all of the boys had the opportunity to compete in a variety of different events for their Houses. Students competed well, gave it their all and demonstrated some fantastic House spirit. It was great to see all students being both gracious winners and dignified losers. It was good to see lots of the boys dress up in their House colours and cheer loudly for their Houses. The atmosphere at Santos was a whole different experience and it really gave the competitors a rush and a taste of what it would be like on the big stage. Each student competed in events including one throwing event, one jumping event, and a tug of war division (lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight). The boys also participated both in a 100 and a 200 metre race. From this, the best four in each House from their year level competed in a year level relay and the combined relay was run by the best runners from each year level in their House. Wrapping up the day was the House Captain and teacher relay, where two teachers from each House and the two House Captains combined for a race. There were many strong performances by all Age Champions, teachers involved in the relay and House Captains. Congratulations to Montagne House, who took home 1st place, captained by Corey Paparella and Adam Leydon. Chavion and Chanel tied in 2nd place, followed by Marian and Fourviere. Although there can only be one winner, it is fair to say that all the boys had a great day. Thank you to Terry McAuliffe for calling our races and to all of the people who made this day possible, especially Mr Jenner and Mr Jackson. Congratulations to the following Age Champions:

Stage 2 Examinations Good luck to all Year 12 students who are undertaking external examinations over the next few weeks. The final examination is Geography, which occurs on Monday 20 November. I am sure that students will be feeling they have put their best efforts forward and are ready for a well-earned rest. From the Director of Teaching & Learning IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS STUDYING STAGE 2 SUBJECTS THIS YEAR Students have been emailed the following information. STAGE 2 (YEAR 12) RESULTS - this includes Year 11 students studying Stage 2 Religion Stage 2 SACE results are expected to be available through Students Online on Tuesday 19 December from 8.30 am. Official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) will arrive in accordance with local, national and international postal delivery schedules. For more information about SACE results, visit the My Results section on the SACE website. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. If they have never logged in before (unlikely I would hope) the PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday (e.g. 3rd January would have PIN 0301). The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Stage 2 results will be sent to the address recorded on Students Online in December. Please email Deborah Hearl ([email protected]) by 30 November at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Year 12 students applying for courses through SATAC should ensure that their postal address and email is correct when they log on to SATAC - this is SEPARATE to SACE - else they won't receive course offers. The contact email address should NOT be the student's school email as this account will be inactive after 31 December 2017. STUDENTS are responsible for checking this information and changing if necessary. https://apply.satac.edu.au/lgnrg/x?loginCycle=unis2018 Will you get SACE this year? For most Year 12 students, the remaining "boxes to tick" to get SACE this year are:

• pass 3 full Year, Stage 2 subjects • pass Research Project (if they haven't already) • get 200 SACE credits.

Students expecting to complete a Certificate III this year that can count towards the ATAR must ensure I receive the required documentation by 30 November at the very latest. STAGE 2 EXAMS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR YEAR 12 EXAMS Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:

• should contact me ASAP by email at [email protected] • ensure you have spoken to me BEFORE the exam commences • the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell • students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their moderated predicted exam mark by

seeing me at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks.

Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell, still do better than their moderated predicted mark!

Year 12 SACE Board written examinations are scheduled to start at Sacred Heart on Monday 6 November. Students have already received an exam attendance slip and exam timetable with dates, times and locations in addition to rules relating to sitting the exam. Students must familiarise themselves with these rules and ensure that they know exactly what equipment they are/are not permitted to take into the exam room. Students should also familiarise themselves with the instructions on the front cover of each of their exams (distributed by class teachers and also accessible at the SACE Board website). I would particularly like to point out that students are not permitted to have a mobile phone or smart watch in their possession and hence these items should not be brought into the examination room. Ideally exam attendance slips should be brought to each exam. I don't have extra copies so cannot do anything to assist if it has been lost or forgotten. It will not be the end of the world if a student forgets to bring it. It is a bit like a driver's licence - unlikely that I need to check it unless there is a problem! Pencil cases, calculator covers (if a calculator is permitted) and other paper (unless approved notes for Mathematics exams) are also not to be brought into the exam room. If students are permitted to bring a calculator for one or more of their exams, it must be on the list of approved calculators. Likewise, any dictionaries need to be on the list of approved dictionaries. The links below will take you to the lists of approved calculators and dictionaries: Approved calculators: click here Approved dictionaries: click here Students should aim to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before the scheduled start time as there are a number of administrative tasks to do before the exam starts. Please be aware there is a seating arrangement. NOTE THAT STAGE 2 EXAMS CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED. Most exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, but not ALL - so very important to check the exam timetable carefully. Stage 2 SACE Year 12 2017 Exam Timetable > YEAR 10 AND 11 EXAMS - END OF SEMESTER 2 Year 10 and 11 students have also been emailed their Semester 2 exam timetable and rules relating to exams. Year 10 and 11 Semester 2 2017 Exam timetable > Please note that Year 10 and 11 ENGLISH students will be doing their exam on their Chromebook/laptop device. It is essential that Year 10 and 11 English students bring their fully charged Chromebook/device to their English exam. It is not appropriate for families to book holidays during this important assessment period. In keeping with SACE Board policy, "matters of the student's own choosing (e.g. family holidays)" are not acceptable grounds for special provisions (such as rescheduling). The consequence for students missing exams due to holidays is therefore unfortunately zero. YEAR 12 WEEK 1 2018 Year 11 students will have their first week of 2018 Year 12 lessons in the week following Year 11 exams. Students and parents of Year 11 students have been emailed details regarding this week (27–30 Nov). I wish all students the best of luck with their revision programs in the lead up to final exams. Karen Bailey Director of Teaching & Learning

Archbishop’s visit to Sacred Heart Senior We were blessed with the presence of Most Reverend Archbishop Philip Wilson DD JCL and Monsignor Ian Dempsey as they spent some time with members of our community as part of the Diocesan Leadership Team’s visit to the Brighton Parish Community. His Grace interacted with a group of students consisting of current Remar Gold Rowers, student leaders, and Marist Immersion representatives. The students shared their own experiences of faith, charity, and personal formation as Archbishop Wilson recounted stories of his own Marist Education at St Joseph’s College, Hunter’s Hill. As the Year 12’s embark on a new chapter at the end of the year, His Grace encouraged them to always refer back to the grounding of a Catholic, Marist education. He stressed the impact that we can have in the community as young people of faith and charity. The staff were addressed by His Grace over morning tea, where he commended the work of contemporary Catholic educators. Archbishop Wilson told of Marcellin Champagnat’s devotion to his faith and the Church during the French Revolution as a point of reference for the importance of teachers in the Church. We thank Archbishop Philip Wilson and Monsignor Ian Dempsey for spending time in our College community. James Gill Director of Marist Mission

H&SS: Future proofing your child’s education The Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty (H&SS) have applied the recommendations delivered by Charles Fadel at a recent Melbourne conference on the 21st Century Learner. As founder and Chairman of the Centre for Curriculum Redesign, he has well-shaped views about how curriculum should be redesigned to enable students to be life and work ready. “The rise of automation and artificial intelligence is recasting how education and learning is taught, including how and what teachers teach, how information is gathered and communicated and what and how students learn,” Charles Fadel said. The H&SS Learning Area has familiarised itself with Fadel’s Four-Dimensional Education: The Competencies Learners Need to Succeed. These include: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, digital technology, problem solving, innovation and entrepreneurship. The delivery of these competencies have been identified within each subject, in Years 10, 11 and 12, that is within the H&SS Learning Area. This has become the focus for the H&SS Learning Area to ensure the best learning outcomes for students now and in the future. Marisa Favilla Head of Humanities and Social Sciences
