Annual Catholic Appeal
A special word of thanks to all those who have participated in The Annual Catholic Appeal. As of February 1, 2021 parishioners have made pledges totaling $104,249.24 of which $102,575.24 has been paid.Once again a very generous family pledged and paid in full $25,000. Our Goal for this year was $96,794.00. There is $1,694.00 in pledges that have not been fulfilled as of this date. If all pledges are paid in full we will receive back $7,455.24.
MASS INTENTIONS
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Item 1
I share with you some news that I held off with for a while. On Christmas Day I was alerted by parishioners at the 8:00 A.M. Mass that there was water coming through the back wall of the church. If you recall last year, we had a leak on the confessional side of the Church and now this leak is on the opposite side. I did not want to share this news during Christmas time because everyone, I believe, needed that joyous celebration after what we have all been living through for almost a year now. Work has begun to make this repair which entails pointing and replacing slate roof tiles. Pictures that I took on Christmas morning, after being alerted to the leak, are on the bulletin board in the vestibule. The estimated cost for these repairs is $12,000.00; this is an unanticipated repair which is not in the budget. Once again, I appeal to you to help in meeting this expense. If 120 families/individuals gave $100 we could meet this expense. As I have told you in the past, I will not ask you to do anything that I have not done myself; therefore, please know that I put in the first $100 for this repair. Are there 119 families or individuals that can do the same? Thank you in advance for your continued generosity, understanding and support. Please make your donation either via the USPS or by placing an envelope marked REPAIR on which is also your name, address and envelope number and place it in the collection basket. God bless and reward you as we together take care of our beautiful church. THANK YOU to those who have already so generously responded to this appeal. I am grateful for your generosity! May God reward you for your goodness! A report will be given weekly as to the amount we have collected toward this repair project. As of February 3, 9 parishioners have generously donated $2,700.00 toward our goal of $12,000.00.
Item 2
Many have asked me what we will due regarding the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday, February 17.
The Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome has given the Bishops instructions regarding the distribution
of ashes in this time of pandemic. Therefore, ashes will be distributed in the following way:
1. The distribution of ashes should take place only during a Mass or Liturgy of the Word Service;
2. The priest will offer the prayer for blessing of ashes;
3. He sprinkles the ashes with holy water without saying anything;
4. He then addresses all those present and only once says the formula as it appears in the Roman Missal, applying it to all in general: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
5. At that point, the priest, deacon, or ministers cleanse their hands, put on a face mask, and go to the place where ashes will be distributed.
6. They then sprinkles the ashes on each person’s head without saying anything.
PLEASE NOTE: The ashes will not be imposed on your forehead in the sign of a cross but rather will be sprinkled on the top of your head. This method of distribution is within the tradition of the Church and generally used in many places in the world. (I have been in both Poland and Italy on Ash Wednesdays in the past and received ashes in this manner in both places in this way; Fr. Alex shared with me that this is the way ashes are always distributed in South Korea.)
Please note that if you do not feel well you should refrain from receiving ashes. If this manner of receiving ashes makes you feel uncomfortable, please remember that you are not obliged by Church Law to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.
The schedule of Masses/Services on Ash Wednesday is as follows:
9:00 AM- Mass 12 NOON- Mass
3:00 PM- Service with distribution of ashes 7:00 PM-Mass

Item 3 Each Roman Catholic parish corporation is governed by the Bishop, Vicar General, the Pastor and two laypersons who are Trustees subject to the canonical jurisdiction of the Diocesan Bishop, according to New York State law. The Parish Trustees assist the Pastor to ensure the well being of the parish. For over 10 years, Lou Tognan served as a Trustee of our parish. Lou recently informed me that he was resigning from this position because he felt it was time to bring in younger people who could assist with the many challenges that our parish faces. Lou was also a member of the Finance Council and represented the Finance Council on the Pastoral Council; he has also resigned form this position. I am grateful to Lou for all his years of dedicated service to the parish. Lou, a great big THANK YOU and may God bless you for your generous service and goodness to our parish.
I am happy to announce that I have asked Mary Pat Vetter to serve as a Trustee and that she has accepted my request. (Mary Pat’s father, Jim Curran, was a Trustee of the parish for many years so she will be following in her father’s footsteps.) Mary Pat is also a member of the Parish Finance Council. Thank you for accepting this responsibility, Mary Pat!
Mary Pat will join our other serving Trustee, Paul DeBenedettis, in the role of Parish Trustees.
I have a few candidates to speak with for the open position on the Finance Council and will share that information with you when that decision has been finalized.
Item 4 Pass along the good word! Sacred Heart Catholic Academy is up and running with in-school instruction and virtual instruction. We have room for more students! All diocesan and CDC protocols are always being strictly adhered to in the Academy. For more information call the Principal, Mrs. Conlan at 718-631-4804.
Item 5 Many times, when a loved one dies people buy vestments, chalices, pyxes, etc. in their memory. While we are grateful for the gesture please know that there are only so many that any parish can use and many times, we send them to the missions
where they will be used and where the person in whose memory they were donated will be prayed for when the item is used. Presently, we have more than enough chalices and pyxes. I do, however, have a list of other items that we can use or need to be replaced. Please contact me for further information.
Item 6 Thanks to all who have returned their updated parish census forms to the rectory. If you have not done so yet please do as soon as possible. You can mail them, drop them off in the rectory mail slot or send them via email. Even if you have filled out a census form in the past PLEASE fill out the one sent in the mail or print it online. We need to have up-to date records of our parishioners. The pandemic made this so evident! Please get a census form and fill it out today!
Item 7 We are livestreaming all our Sunday Masses and the 9:00 a.m. DAILY MASS. You can access the livestream by going to the webpage https://sacredheartbayside-queens.org and clicking on the “Watch Mass Stream button. Masses will also be available to be viewed on demand approximately a half hour after each Mass is finished. THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA ON MONDAYS AFTER THE 9:00 A.M. MASS AND FIRST FRIDAY AND FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTIONS THAT TAKE PLACE AFTER THE 9:00 A.M. MASS ON EACH OF THOSE DAYS ARE ALSO LIVE STREAMED. We are also livestreaming a Holy Hour and Rosary every Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.
PLEASE REMEMBER: We can have 65 people at each Mass in accord with capacity limitations and the 6 feet social distancing rule. The rules of social distancing will be strictly adhered to and it is required that masks be worn always during mass except when receiving Communion. Families (meaning you all live in the same household) can sit together at Mass. Thank you.

Item 8 Electronic Giving is Convenient for You and Will Help Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. By supporting Sacred Heart of Jesus through WeShare, you will be helping to propel the parish into the future, with an automatic giving mechanism that is easy to use and saves you time. In addition to minimizing the exchange of paper and helping us reduce costs, it will be easier for our parish to achieve sustainable offertory even when you are away on vacation or unable to physically attend Mass. To get started, simply click the e-giving link on our parish website www.sacredheartbayside-queens.org. or if you are experiencing difficulties in signing up please contact Sister Ellen. Sister is in the office on Tuesdays.

BEREAVMENT SUPPORT ASSISTANCE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC… 365 DAYS OF GRIEF AFFIRMATIONS
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Better to be safe than sorry
We had hoped to resume our bereavement support group early in the New Year. However, with new variations of the virus on the rise here in the United States, we have decided to err on the side of caution and delay our coming together in the church hall. Perhaps spring? Perhaps summer? Whenever it is safe to do so. However, in the meantime, there is an excellent source of grief support that is on the internet. DAILY AFFIRMATIONS will come to your computer screen every day for 365 days. It’s excellent. To access it:www.waittfh.com/grief-and-healing Please don’t hesitate to call Sister Kathleen at 718-224-5695 for any grief related assistance.
SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS GROUP
We invite parents/guardians with children/adults with special needs or IEP’s to join us to share and exchange ideas. We will be doing ZOOM meetings at 10am on the below listed dates. Please call the Religious Education Office at 718-631-1307 or email us at [email protected] for the link.
The meeting schedule follows: February 11th & March 16th
LENTEN FAITH SHARING 2021 Lent begins February 17th. Since we have ZOOM as a tool to gather people together, I'd like to invite you to join me in a virtual faith sharing venture. It was quite successful during Advent. Since we are still leery of gathering in public, it is the best alternative. But you must have access to ZOOM in order to participate.
I have secured 30 copies of a Lenten program entitled LENT 2021: TO LIVE ANEW by Sister Joan Chittister. In six brief reflections we will be offered insight into how “living anew” might look in these extraordinary times of pandemic and political upheaval. We will also be introduced to six companions—one for each week of Lent—to walk with us during these 40 days of spiritual renewal.
Meetings will take place on Monday evenings beginning February 22nd from 7 to 8 PM. PLEASE NOTE: In order to secure the material we will be using, you must call me at (718-224-5695) or email [email protected]

FAMILY
This year we will continue to celebrateFamily Mass thefirst Sunday of each month (with some exceptions). However because of the Corona Virus it will be different. Since we have a limited number of people permitted in Church at each Mass we will not designate only one Mass for Family Mass. Rather, on the weekend designated for Family Mass we invite families to attend any of the four Sunday Masses most convenient for them. Unfortunately, the Children’s Choir will be on hold until further notice. The next Family Mass weekend will be

SACRED HEART “FOOD PANTRY”
The food chest located in the vestibule of the church next to St. Theresa’s shrine serves families in need here in the Bayside Flushing area. We do not directly deal with the families but we help to provide the items needed to support the new food pantry at St Kevin’s Church in Flushing. The word has spread among our neighbors and many have come to rely on the items available at “The Market.”Please continue to bring items to the church when you come. We have become a real lifeline during this time of pandemic. Items most in demand are baked beans, canned veggies, jarred tomato sauce, peanut butter and jelly, canned tuna fish, dry milk, oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup. Special thanks to JOHNMITACEK who picks up the food and delivers it to the food pantry each week.
SACRED HEART RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Religious Education classes are being held virtually for our Saturday Religious Education Students. Our program is for children in public or private schools. The Diocese requires two years of religious instruction to receive the sacraments of communion and confirmation. This program is for children first thru eight grade, older children and special needs children.
If you wish to register a child for classes please call
