A THANK YOU FROM A GRATEFUL ST. COLUMBANUS PARISHIONER

For those of you who have read about the St. Columbanus parishioner who needed some financial support to return to her Senior year of High School at Mother McAuley on the South Side, here is the text of the thank you note her mother wrote to the many parishioners who generously made donations to her cause. Quote from the front of the card: “Each small kindness, like a seed, grows tall in memory.”

Text: I am so grateful that people like you exist. Words can not tell you or explain how thankful and appreciative your kindness bestowed on Natasha and myself. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, Natasha has been given the chance to graduate from Mother McAuley. At the time when all hope, faith and belief was exhausted, you helped us. Thank you. I hope I, along with Natasha, will be able to return and help as you all have done for so many. God bless, Regards, Gina Johnson

Thank you to all of you here at Sacred Heart who made this possible for Natasha. You changed her life.

SAVE THE DATE: SHARING MASS AT ST. COLUMBANUS OCTOBER 18th at 11am The parishioners of Sacred Heart have been invited by Fr. Matt O’Donnell and the parishioners of our sharing parish, St. Columbanus, for Mass on Sunday, October 18th at 11am. There will be a special reception after Mass to dedicate the School Hall to Mrs. Wilson, who was their principal for nearly 40 years. Please consider attending and getting to know St. Columbanus a little better. You’ll truly enjoy the experience. The church is beautiful, the music phenomenal, the people warm and welcoming and the Pastor (Matt O’Donnell) extremely enthusiastic about all the new & good things happening at St. Columbanus. If you have ever donated to St. Columbanus appeals, worked at the Food Pantry, tutored at the school or participated in the Christmas Sharing Project, consider going to St. Columbanus to celebrate Mass. It’s a wonderful opportunity to put faces to the outreach we do. You won’t regret it! If you are interested in attending, please contact Judy Pyke at [email protected] or 847-446-0856.

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish

Parish Transformation Two weekends ago, I wrote about this process in which our parish is currently engaging. Here is a bit more information on Parish Transformation. (I’ve taken this information from the Archdiocesan website and adapted it somewhat.) The process is divided into two parts. In the first part, the team is given the opportunity to identify strengths or “pearls of great price” that give the parish its distinctive character and definition. At the same time, in the first part of the process, the team identifies those areas in parish life and ministry that may be weak or ripe for new development. A self-assessment tool is provided which outlines parish foundations and those key elements that comprise a parish for the team’s discussion and planning. In the second part of the process, the team focuses on financial and material aspects of parish life through benchmarking. Helpful tools are provided by which a parish reviews in detail its financial and material resources, personnel, budget, and facilities in light of the

best practices of the Archdiocese. at

regular intervals. Our team will also have available to them the results of the Long Range Planning Committee that met for three years. The results of the committee will be re-examined in light of what transpires during

SPARKED HEARTS One Voice started on Sept. 13! Contact Carol or Kathy Janega Keenan if you would like to sing and/or play an instrument with our great teen ensemble! One Voice provides music for the 4:30 Mass twice a month during the school year and is open to high school students. Come and join us with any skill level; our only requirement is you love to make music! Interested in getting involved at Sacred Heart? Ask Carol for opportunities! There are so many ways to share your gifts! JUNIOR HIGH NIGHT is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. We meet the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 6:30-7:30 in the Teen Room, located in the basement of the Parish Center. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Do you know about Children’s Liturgy of the Word? Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word offered for ages 5 through 3rd graders at the 10:30 AM Mass. No pre-registration is necessary. All children are

welcome and encouraged to attend. Just before the Liturgy of the Word begins for

the assembly, these children are invited to go with the weekly leaders from the church. During this special time, the volunteer teacher leads the children through prayers, songs and readings that are simplified for children. The children learn about the same Scripture readings as the rest of the assembly. They are taught a simplified main message of the readings and are encouraged to share that message with their parents after Mass.

New Security Procedures We have implemented a new security plan for the safety of our children. Student entry is by the front door of the school. Our back doors will be locked except for a short window for our catechists to enter.

The front door will be locked at 9:00 am and late students will need to be buzzed in.

If you need to enter the school building after 9:00 you will be asked to identify yourself.

Thank You to our Oktoberfest Volunteers and Attendees!

A huge thank you to Kristin and Rob Levoy, our Oktoberfest Co-Chairs who spent countless hours over the past months getting ready for another fantastic Oktoberfest celebration! A special thank you to the many, many volunteers who assisted with all of the tasks that need to be addressed in order to make our 4th annual Oktoberfest a rousing success: All-day set up volunteers, decorators, food coordinators, beer servers, carnival game volun-teers, dunk tank dads, root beer garden servers, volunteer and check-in coordinators, ticket sellers, raffle ticket sellers, t-shirt sellers, take down volunteers, Mass sacristans, lectors, servers, Eucharistic minis-ters, ushers. Wow! That’s a lot of people! Thanks also to the sup-port provided by everyone in the parish office and to the School and Religious Ed for promoting the event. We truly appreciate all of the sponsors for our event: Sylvester Con-struction Services, Inc., Grand Food Center, Mathnasium, Donnellan Family Funeral Services, Joseph Mullarkey Distributors, Anonymous Sacred Heart Family, The Bauer Family, The Burden Family, The DeCillo Family, the Fleming Family, the Hamman Family, the Levoy Family, the Jim O’Brien Family, the Daniel O’Bryan Family, the Steve Olson Family, the Vabakos Family, the Muhlenkamp Family, and Rich-ard & Marilee Wehman. And, of course, we are grateful for the beautiful weather with which we were so blessed. It wouldn’t have been nearly as much fun if it had been cold and rainy! Until next year…

Attention Ladies

Is your husband a bear? Would you like to turn him into a lamb? “When you give the gift of a retreat you are really giving the spiritual gifts of peace & solitude; rest & contemplation; support & guidance. This enables a deeper and more fulfilling time to pray; connection with Jesus; silence of worldly distractions. Which provides the most important and meaningful gifts of all: awareness of God’s ever present love and grace in our lives”. Ballarmine Men’s Retreat October 30-November 1 , 2015.

BULLETIN DEADLINE Please submit your bulletin articles by Tuesday 9:00AM.

PARISH TRANSFORMATION SURVEY Sacred Heart is undertaking the Parish Transformation process this Fall. About 50 parishioners from all age groups are partici-pating in two months of meetings and re-flection to develop a plan to enable Sacred Heart to more effectively bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community. We want and need your participation, which you can provide by completing this sur-vey. Your candid views are very important to us and will help our parish more vibrantly and effectively live out the mission of Christ. If you know someone who has left Sacred Heart, please share this with them as we value their opinion as well. All answers are anonymous. We request that you please complete this survey no later than October 12. Please note that all questions marked with an as-terisk are required. Hard copies of the survey and pre-addressed envelopes are available in the gathering space and vestibule. Please seal your com-pleted survey in an envelope and drop it in the basket or at the parish office. If you prefer to complete the survey electronically, please click on the QR code below, or click

on the link in this week’s parish eblast.
