GOSPEL MEDITATION If you have been closely following the Sun-day readings, today's Gospel could sound a bit like a broken record. Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that "wisdom has been given him" and recognize the "mighty deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too much for them to bear. "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners know his whole clan, his male and fe-male relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. "They took offense at him." As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus' identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus' listeners have an expec-tation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. "He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there." Do your assump-tions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect?

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Roman Catholic Church stands out in the world in many, many ways. Its strong stances on moral issues resounds throughout a world where “anything goes.” Its Mass is profound. Its seven sac-raments as given by Jesus Christ are taken quite seriously as gifts from God Himself, which they are.

The ritual of the Holy Mass is something many outside of the Church do not understand or mis-understand. The word I hear from many non-Catholics is we Catholics are “mysterious.” And we are. The Mass is mystery as is the concept of the Holy Trinity and so many other things in our Faith. There are no simple explanations. Sometimes, our Church teaches us, mystery must remain and that is a good thing.

When you look at the priest, you see that he wears certain clothing during Mass. Over his clerical clothes he puts on the alb, which comes from Latin for “white.” Then he kisses his stole, a sign of his priesthood and puts it over his shoulders. On top of the stole is the chasuble which is what most of you see when I or any priest is on the altar. The stole and chasuble are the color of the liturgical season we are in. For instance, this weekend I am wearing green for Ordinary Time. The word chasuble originated as a sort of conical poncho, called in Latin a casula or “little house”, that was the common outer travel-ing garment in the late Roman Empire and at the beginning of our Church history. Over time the casula developed down to what I and other priests, including the pope, wear today.

The chalice, from the Latin calix or mug, is borrowed from the Greek “kulix” or goblet. It is a footed cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper when He first changed the wine into His very Blood. He said to do this in remembrance of Him, so that is exactly what we do each Mass. The same for the host, from Hostia in the Latin, is sometimes called altar bread and is simply the bread or wafer used in the Roman Catholic ritual of the Eucharist. At the words of institution the bread is changed into the Body of Christ. The host we all receive at Holy Communion is unleavened bread used by Jesus at the Last Supper when He changed it for the first time into His very Body. This great miracle occurs at each Mass.

The ciborium is the lidded container (gold in our parish) which holds the hosts for consecration. It comes from the Latin by way of ancient Greek. The word is also used for a large canopy over the altar which was common in the early Medieval church architecture but rarely seen today.

Purificators are the clothes used to clean the lip of the chalice after someone has drunk from it or to clean the vessel after communion is over. The corporal is the square white linen cloth which goes on top of the altar and then the chalice and ciborium and paten are placed on top of it. Corporal comes from Latin corpus which means “body.” In other words it holds the Body of Christ.

A paten, or diskos, is a small plate made to hold the Eucharistic bread which is to be consecrated. Also when you see our altar servers hold the plate under your hands or chin, that is also a paten. Both are used to protect the bread which then becomes the very Body of Christ. The servers hold patens un-der your hands or chin in order to catch the host if it is to fall or to catch crumbs from the host. Every speck, we believe, is truly the Body and Blood of Christ, so that is why you will see me carefully cleanse the paten, the ciboria and chalice after Communion.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Timothy W. Farrell, Pastor
