NEWSLETTER: 29th April 2015 TERM 2, WEEK 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our second week of the term. What a lovely event last Friday’s ANZAC Commemoration liturgy was, as

together, we were led as a school by our senior Year Six students in a prayerful and reverent ceremony, acknowledging

the greatest of sacrifices paid by those who have gone before us, in the defence of our country.

On Saturday, Sacred Heart Primary School was represented by Tarkin O’Riley and Shanelle Iaconi at the ANZAC Day

celebrations at Axford Park in Mt Hawthorn. In addition, the Sullivan Family, represented Sacred Heart Primary School

at the ANZAC Service in Mt Lawley. A special thank you to our children and their families for their support, and also to

Mrs Renee Byrne-King, Mrs Sonia Caielli, Mrs Frances Ammoscato and Mrs Carolyn Perlini for their leadership and

support of these events, that we hope contribute to our children’s understanding and knowledge of our history, and the

tragedy of war and conflict in past years.

Learning: Learning from our experiences.

Last Thursday afternoon, our teachers from Kindergarten to Year Two worked with Mrs Jan Fleming, one of the Early

Years Team Consultants from Catholic Education WA, to write our school’s Early Childhood Education Charter. This

was a very productive session, with us working hard to produce the first draft of our document, that is in effect, our

statement of beliefs, ensuring a clear vision to all, of what teaching and learning within the Early Years at Sacred Heart,

looks like. It is anticipated that our final, staff supported version, will be published for display in all Junior classrooms.

Our system’s commitment to the National Quality Standards (NQS) continues, and over the course of this year, an audit

(involving both teaching and non teaching staff self-reflection, and an external assessment conducted by me, as a

Principal), of our practices, our facilities and our degree of engagement with families, will be undertaken in preparation

for the writing of the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). This plan, due for completion by November of this year, will

highlight for us, areas for future focus and targeted funding.

I commend our staff for their enthusiasm and dedication to this significant task, aimed chiefly at better outcomes for our

students. Mrs Emma McHardie operates this year, as the coordinator of the NQS implementation, at Sacred Heart. We

anticipate being able to present information about Early Years Education and the NQS, at Parents and Friends

Association Meetings and Coffee Mornings over coming terms.

This afternoon, the Leadership team worked with our School Improvement Advisor, Mrs Eileen Climo, and our

assigned School Support Consultant, Ms Tamara Boyler, in the first of our planning sessions to examine student

achievement data and prepare for future staff workshops, where curriculum focus areas will be identified.

Engagement -The promotion of positive relationships with our students/staff/parents.

Cross Country training continues with strong support for these lovely sessions in Hyde Park on Tuesdays and Fridays

at 7.45am - Keep up the hard work in preparing for this term’s Carnival. Last week, our hard working ladies in the

canteen, prepared lovely ANZAC Biscuits for the children to enjoy! Our canteen service is provided for our children,

and any support parents can offer in preparing recess and lunches, is always welcome- please see Mrs Biundo if you are

able to spare some time to assist.

Morning and Afternoon Details.

I continue to be on duty to supervise students between 8.15 – 8.45 am each morning. All students arriving between 8.15am

– 8.30 am are required to remain seated on the benches outside the Music, Year 2 and Library rooms. To ensure everyone’s

safety, classroom doors open at 8.30 am for students to unpack and prepare for the morning, and are directed to classrooms

at this time. The morning bell goes at 8.45 am each morning. At this time, all students are to be seated in their classrooms,

for the commencement of the school day. Any children arriving at school after 8.45 am, are required to visit the school

office with their parent to sign in, as the electronic rolls for classes will have already been completed. If parents need to drop

children at school before 8.15 am, due to work commitments, we have a before-school care service on site. As our priority is

always to ensure we provide adequate Duty of Care, our children are not permitted to access the playgrounds and

equipment, either before or after school. Thank you for your co-operation with this. In addition, children being walked to

school by parents, must enter at the side gate for pedestrians, and walk along the pathway, rather than crossing through the

double Drive Through gates, where vehicles are entering.

Accountability- Tak ing re sponsib ility f or the q uality o f our work .

Mrs Carolyn Perlini and Mrs Renee Byrne-King attended the SEQTA Reporting training session yesterday, in preparation

for the new Reporting templates that together with other Catholic schools, Sacred Heart will be using this year. In addition,

we anticipate the need to conduct Parent Information sessions prior to the end of this term, to assist with the interpretation

of the Reports.

Discipleship: Living out the teachings of Jesus.

This Thursday, our Year Six parents will attend the Confirmation Information evening in the Library at 7.00pm. This very

important milestone in your child's faith journey is a time of celebration and preparation. As a school, we look forward to

supporting you, as the primary educators of your children, with this preparation. The Religious Education programme here

at school, offers your child a basic understanding of sacramental details, and the opportunity to deepen this understanding

and experience of the sacraments, is provided by you as parents, when you ensure your child is able to attend Mass

regularly, and reflect on how the sacraments make continued contributions to their developing faith.

I look forward to meeting with you all on Thursday evening, as together with Father Peter, Nadia Napoli, our Parish

Sacramental coordinator, and Mrs Renee Byrne-King, we all commit to this most special of journeys.

In closing, can I call for special prayers for one of my former students, Hamish, and his devoted family, from St Patrick's

School in Katanning. Hamish is now a Year Six student, and suffered a very serious accident on the weekend, and is

currently in intensive care at Princess Margaret Hospital. This is a very sad time for his loved ones and the St Patrick’s

Community.

Can I also acknowledge the continued efforts of you all to support your children in their learning, and preparedness for the

“business” of their school days. The demands of Swimming lessons can take their toll on energy levels- early nights, a good

book to read and nutritious meals are called for!

Many thanks and God Bless,

Mrs Tanya McGuire

ANZAC Day School - On Fr iday 24th Apr il, the school gathered on the oval near the flagpole and participated in a very reverent, Anzac Day ceremony commemorating the soldiers who fought for Australia and New Zealand. Thank you to the Year 6 students and the school choir for their preparation and presentation. The Sacred Heart students were very respectful and participated thoughtfully in the ceremony, remembering the soldiers and their families. Mt Hawthorn and Mt Lawley RSL - Sacred Hear t was represented at the Mount Hawthorn Anzac Day Ceremony by Shanelle Iaconi and Tarkin O'Riley and at the Mount Lawley ceremony by Olivia and Thomas Sullivan. We would like to thank these students for representing our school honourably, at this special occasion in our community. Both ceremonies were very moving and the students were very proud to place a wreath at the memorial. Thank you to all Sacred Heart students, parents and teachers who were also present to pay your respects at the Anzac ceremonies in our community. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

2015 Swimming lessons Our school swimming lessons will conclude this Friday. Thank you parents for your support and assistance during the past fortnight. It has been very encouraging watching the students grow in confidence and skill during the lessons. The students have appeared to really enjoy the lessons too, which is great. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

SAFETY! Important Information for Parents using the School Drive-Through Service Please adhere to the following points to ensure ongoing safety of our students in the Before-School and After-School Drive Through:

Students are only to be dropped off/picked up once the car is parked in one of the drop-off/pick-up parking bays. Students will not be allowed to go to cars until parked in these bays.

All parents walking with children, who are not in drive-through, are to use the side path and side gate only to enter and exit the school; do not walk your children between the cars in the school driveway or school pick-up zone.

Please do not reverse your car in the school pick-zone. If you are waiting to leave, you will need to be patient and wait for the cars in front to exit first.

We thank you for your co-operation in keeping the children safe. Carolyn Perlini and Renee Byrne-King (Acting Assistant Principals)

Engaging Hearts and Minds This term we will be resuming our whole school social skills program. Beginning in Week 3, the student will be explicitly taught the social skill: Being Respectful. We will then be looking for authentic opportunities for our students to practise this skill, so it becomes embedded in everyday interactions. We would be very grateful if parents and caregivers could please reinforce, role-model and practise this skill at home. If you would like to know more about how we teach social skills at Sacred Heart, we encourage you to go to our Engaging Hearts and Mind blog at: http://shpshengagingheartsandminds.blogspot.com.au/ Thank you for supporting our whole-school social skills program. LIBRARY There are a large number of new books in the library. Sadly they are unable to be borrowed as they are waiting to be covered. It is a big job for one person, but as the saying goes ‘many hands make light work’, so if you feel you have time to cover some books please call in to the library and pick some up. While you cover them your child/children can read them. Thank you, Mrs Sue Hanford.
