Gaudete Sunday The third Sunday of Advent is known as “Gaudete Sunday. "In the readings, we hear about miracles associated with the Messianic age, its coming, and what we need to do to prepare. We also learn about the doubts of John the Baptist, how he dealt with them, and the blessing that makes us even more fortunate than John was. Why is the third Sunday of Advent known as Gaudete Sunday? Its name is taken from the entrance antiphon of the Mass, which is: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near. This is a quotation from Philippians 4:4-5, and in Latin, the first word of the antiphon is gaudete (Latin, “rejoice”; it's also pronounced with three syllables: gau-de-te) What significance does this have?
Advent is the season of preparing for the arrival of the Lord Jesus (both his first coming and his second coming), and by the third Sunday of Advent, we are most of the way through the season. Thus, it is appropriate to rejoice as we see the goal of the season approaching: “The Lord is near.” What is the appropriate liturgical color for this day? According to the rubrics: In this mass the color rose is used. It doesn’t have to be rose; it can also be violet.

“Monday Nite LIVE” Returns! Presenting the eight-part series
“UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE”
Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture, so you can get the “big picture” of the Bible and understand what it’s all about. The complexity of the Bible is simplified through an easy-to-follow narrative approach, and ingenious color-coded Bible Timeline Chart. The study includes eight half-hour videos presented by Jeff Cavins. These engaging videos also feature footage from the Holy Land, animated maps, useful charts and graphics, and beautiful art, which add to the overall experience of the study. Each video will be followed by a lively group discussion. We will begin Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible on MONDAY, JAN. 8th at 7:00pm in Founders Hall. To register for the study, email Paul Abbe, Director of Faith Formation at [email protected], or sign-up at the Faith Formation table in the center of the Gathering Place. [See the flyer on the Faith For-
mation table for information on other “Winter Quarter” courses available!]
